This was our 3rd time cooking with Alma. This time we chose to make mole. I have to say, I wasn't very excited about mole, I tried it once in a "mexican" restaurant in the States and it wasn't good. Was I wrong! After tasting what it's actually supposed to taste like, I love it! Such a complex flavor. So you meet Alma at the entrance to the Mega store in downtown Playa Del Carmen, she whisks you into her car and to an authentic neighborhood produce market where the produce is so beautiful and fresh, nothing like the markets in the US. From there, you visit the butcher shop and the tortilla factory and then off to Alma's home to cook and drink margaritas. We made mexican coffee margaritas which were... amazing - and guacamole to start off the fun. Oh, did I mention we have met some wonderful people from different parts of the world over the years? Such fun to get to know people & learn something new. After making the meal, we all sit down and eat what we've made. After class, Alma drops us back at the Mega store and I usually go inside to search for ingredients I can't get at home. We can't wait to see what we will make next year.

My wife and I were at one of the resorts in the area and wanted an activity we could do off property to see some of the actual city and this class helped us with that. Meeting up was no problem (we travelled by taxi from our hotel). Alma was friendly and guided us through a neighborhood in Playa del Carmen where we were able to eat fresh tortillas, buy fresh fruit, and gather what was needed for the meal. She also answered all of our questions on the region and educated us on the food and daily living of people in the area. The food we prepared was delicious (and I mean really delicious) and we had a lot of fun making it. Fresh guacamole, fresh tortillas, tacos, chocolate mole and salsas that I will be making at home now that I know how. My wife told me this was one of her favorite things we did on vacation and I agree completely.

This review is long (really too long) overdue! We attending a cooking class when we went to a wedding in Mexico. After searching for a fun food related activity in Playa del Carmen we found Alma's class. We had a great time with drinks and delicious food. I am someone who regularly cooks but still learned a new trick that I use regularly now (charring peppers on the stove-top). Alma was very knowledgeable and walked us through authentic markets where we bought our ingredients immediately after pickup. We tried a variety of fresh Mexican ingredients and brought stuff to Alma's kitchen. Her place was lovely and we felt right at home due to her openness and willingness to share her knowledge and her food! We started off with a drink that my husband regularly makes me when I need something to lift my spirits. Then put together some snacks before we started on the main event... MOLE! We learned a lot about Mexican techniques and we found many similarities with our (Sri Lankan/Indian) cooking. Leaving the resort for a breath of actually Mexican fresh air was the best decision we made. The beach was lovely but the highlight of our trip was our day spent with Alma! I would not let any of my family or friends come to Playa del Carmen without booking a class.

Michael & I thoroughly enjoyed this unique experience in the lovely home of Alma, a skilled chef. We first were taken to a local open air market where the fragrance of the farm fresh produce was remarkable. We were educated on what to look for and how best to make our selections. Once at Alma’s home we donned aprons and got to work. We learned so many techniques that We will certainly utilize in our own kitchen. I highly recommend this activity!!

We always enjoy a cooking class when we travel internationally. We get to meet local people, shop where they shop, and a meal shared is always a great bridge between people. I recommend you take one! Alma was very pleasant and we enjoyed our day.
