- kguenther0Marshall, Minnesota17 contributionsOutstanding Week in Merida at Habla.I recently returned from a week at Habla with two friends. We loved it. Our teacher Gabby was kind and patient. The other students at the school (mostly Americans) were fun and adventerous. The cook at the school made simple, but amazing lunches everyday including tamales and chilaquiles. The school day started with an optional coffee and conversation, followed by a couple of hours of instruction, then a commununal lunch and a little more instruction. The school day ended at 1:00pm so we had time to explore the city and surrounding area including much of Merida, Uxmal, Cenote Hacienda Mucuyche, and many terrific restaurants. Knowing a bit of Spanish goes a long way in being able to navigate the experience, and the Habla teachers are great about answering questions, and encouraging you get out there and pracitice. I traveled with two other females and always felt safe in the city. Habla is a great school to consider for a safe and culturally interesting immersion experience in Mexico.Visited January 2024Traveled with friendsWritten January 30, 2024
- PattySoundTraveler54 contributionsHabla: a wonderful school in a fabulous city - a great place to study Spanish at all levels of proficiencyMy husband and I attended a one-week Spanish intensive immersion program at Habla upon the recommendation of a neighbor who took private lessons there last year. It was a wonderful experience for both of us and we had a great time while learning a lot in the process. Our coordinator Ana Maria was so helpful from the beginning – she has great communication skills in English and Spanish. She found us a fabulous host family – I can’t recommend the homestay experience enough, as you really feel like a part of the community and you get to practice your Spanish after school hours too. We stayed there for 8 nights – they even picked us up at the airport and cooked meals for us. They made us feel like family members and not just guests. On our first day of school, we had a brief placement session and joined a class with 5 other adults of approximately our same Spanish level (advanced beginner). Our teacher, Estela, was amazing – so competent, caring, and fun. I needed to work on my grammar, and she really helped with that. The class time just flew by. And as retired educators ourselves (I taught English in Japan for over 5 years as well as middle school English, and my husband worked in education for 35 years), we are very familiar with how effective learning environments operate. These people have a heart for the job and they know what they’re doing. You will be in good hands here. We only studied at Habla for one week, and then we moved to a downtown hotel for another week for independent Spanish practice and time to explore the fantastic city of Merida (we fell in love with the place – so nice and clean and safe with friendly people and so much to see and do), which was a great plan for us. It is possible, however, to stay with Habla for as many weeks as you like – several other students we met were there for as many as 6 weeks. It is a friendly and welcoming community, and the facilities are nice too, including air-conditioned classrooms. It is a top-notch operation. The food is good too – they provide breakfast and brunch so you get to try some authentic local treats. They offer classes for kids and teens as well, and although we were in the adult programming with no kids, they seemed to be doing great work with the kids – they had their own little community going on and seemed very happy and engaged. Every Wednesday they have a special activity in the afternoon after class – during our week it was chocolate making time. We are musicians and we were able to play a little concert for the other students during this time as well, which was a wonderful experience for us. Give Habla a try. You will find it to be rewarding, educational, authentic, and fun.Visited February 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten February 20, 2024

They also pay attention to each family needs individually. The language school offers breakfast and lunch to the students making logistics easier for parents. Merida is very safe and has a lot to offer.Visited June 2024Traveled with familyWritten July 17, 2024
- Traveler408523854611 contributionI've been to several language schools. Hands down, Habla was the best!My family and I did a month long immersion program at Habla and had a FANTASTIC experience. Not only did our language skills improved immensely, but by the end of our stay, the teachers and staff and other students were friends. I've been to several language schools over the years and I can say that Habla has really managed to create something unique: a sense of family; Spanish chats over food; weekly cultural events; birthday celebrations; games and literature in Spanish; Dia de los Muertos traditions. Every experience at the school was special and thoughtful and fun. P.S. For those of you with younger children, they also did a fantastic job of teaching and accomodating my kids who are at very different ages and stages (14, 8 and 4). After the trip was over, I asked each of them what their favorite part was and all three said, "Habla." You can't ask for a better endorsement than that.Visited October 2024Traveled with familyWritten November 25, 2024

Find another school. This one seems to just want to fleece you. Instead of giving me a teacher at my level they put me in a tiny class that had been in session for a week. They did not teach the basics. Even counting. Had a three week immersion scheduled. Quit after 2 in frustration. They refused to refund full amount of week not used. The whole org seems a bit shady.
Do not stay with a host family. They did not provide any meals as described by school and were resentful that a stranger was in their house. They made no attempt to hide it. Airb&b is a way better experience. Left home stay after a week. Another person at the school had an even more awful experience and also left early
In short, not about learning but your money. It was a frustrating and wasteful experience.

Hola SoloTraveler1039, we're afraid you have commented on the wrong school's page. We haven't been open for in-person immersion classes or homestays since March of last year. Still, we're so sorry you had such a negative experience in Mérida and are more than happy to welcome you to Habla in the future. We kindly ask you to remove your comment and direct it to the school you are referencing above. ¡Gracias!

After a magical visit to study at Habla in Mérida for a week in March 2019, my 15 year old son signed up for online lessons in August with Habla Online. I hadn't written a review earlier, because truthfully I wanted to have his teacher all to himself again when we decided to do more online classes. (Selfish that I wanted to keep this all to myself.) Habla staff will ask you what you would like to learn. The teachers have a wealth of qualifications with different focuses, so it will not be easy to chose when they ask you which teacher you'd like to learn with. The classes are culturally rich and creative activity-based. They have different types of classes depending on age and interest. In my son's case, there was structure and a set of material to cover, but also a lot of room for creativity, so you learn culture and language in a creative way, much as you do in their regular classroom methods. My son did a set of 24 classes in the summer in one month -- topics ranged from Yucatecan food, día de muertos, to Argentine writer who focused on science fiction. (By the way, some of these topics found their way into his regular school work in 9th grade, which shows how he retained what he learned). Habla seems to produce original materials to be able to teach in the way they think it's most effective and it's true for their online classes as well. I would recommend their online classes 100%.

I spent a full month at Habla in August of 2019. I have heard it can get very busy during the summer, but in August there were only a handful of students each week at most which made for a nice learning environment. I really could not have asked for a better experience. Not only will you learn a lot of Spanish every week but the instructors will teach you through immersive learning about culture, arts, food, history, or whatever you show an interest in. My instructors were Joel, Alejo, Lucero, Yazmín and Nena who were all amazing and unforgettable people. In addition, Ana María and Silvia were so helpful for coordinating my trip and they will help you with scheduling tours if you want to go see something during the weekend (there is plenty to see & do in and around Merida!). Not to mention Reina will make you some AMAZING food.
I chose the homestay option where I stayed with Doña Magi & her family for the whole experience and I could not recommend it more. I had a lot of additional Spanish practice by staying with a family and they also made some incredible food!
I would recommend Habla for just about anyone. I even hope to go back myself someday.

Habla is truly a very special language and culture school. I attended in early March and found the instruction to be excellent, the approaches of each instructor creative and energizing, the communal spirit so welcoming and encouraging, the food (pre-class fruit and treats, Yucatan specialties for lunch) excellent, the setting comfortable and cool despite the heat of Merida, the field trips interesting and the individual attention of teachers, administrators and staff so encouraging. The teachers discouraged comparisons between students and helped each of us to feel capable of speaking, reading and writing in the language. I learned so much in two weeks. I have attended other immersion programs in Mexico and South America but Habla brings all of this together in a way that worked perfectly for me. Merida is also such a wonderful city and the surrounding areas, ruins, cenotes and the Caribbean were easy to access. Living and studying Spanish in the land of the Maya was such a special experience. I will definitely return to Habla.

I traveled to Mérida, as a native Spanish speaker, with my young adult daughter. Habla exceeded our expectations in so many ways, the school is everything a language center should be: it is fun, inclusive, diverse, engaging, welcoming and effective. My daughter spent nine weeks studying face-to-face at Habla with all the necessary precautions during the pandemic during September-November 2021.
Habla kept my daughter and myself engaged and interested in how they teach Spanish, incorporating art, culture, local food and language.
Saying goodbye to the amazing teachers at Habla was difficult, we already miss being part of a wonderful community of learners and world travelers. Gracias, Habla!
Hasta la próxima!

Habla was the perfect place to learn Spanish with my 8 year old son. I was worried that he would hate the experience but he LOVED every teacher he worked with. On the first day, after asking to reflect on the best and worst, he had no worst. And my teachers were as wonderful - kind, fun, patient and incredibly helpful. They can also accommodate staying with a family if you are looking for an immersive experience.
On top of this, the hospitality was sublime. The school helped us to organize travel adventures figure out how to volunteer locally. And Marimar and Kurt, the founders, had us over to their house where our children, who are the same age, played for hours. The founders do professional development for teachers in other educational institutions and clearly blaze a path with their focus on integration of culture and arts. The staff seems loyal, with little turn over, and the feeling is of a healthy loving family.

My husband and I did a two week intermediate Spanish immersion class at Habla and it far exceeded our very high expectations. The school is amazing, but the teachers are the true heart of the school. I got to meet an intelectual anarchist, eat delicious food and learn more spanish in two weeks than I thought possible. All our teachers had the true gift of teaching. Everyone that works there feels like they love their job and it shows. Another unexpected benefit was the other students. Everyone was so interesting and fun to learn with. I highly recommend Habla to any level of Spanish learner.

I can't recommend Habla enough. I did the in-person Spanish immersion program for two weeks in March 2022 and LOVED it. Lore was my teacher for both weeks and she was incredible. She was very patient, knowledgeable, and personable. She was open to my requests for learning specific things and I never felt like she was judging me (even when I was struggling). Alejo and Ana were fantastic as well, very welcoming and great at keeping everything organized. The food was delicious - Carla is quite the chef! Everyone I met was wonderful.
Overall, I felt I learned more in 2 weeks with Habla's immersion program than I did from a semester of Spanish classes. The cultural aspect gives more meaning and context to the language which deepened my learning and retention. I also appreciated that every day we read, wrote, spoke, and listened to Spanish. I will definitely be taking classes with them in the future.
If you're contemplating classes with Habla, take the leap! You won't be sorry.

I have just returned from a one-week experience with Habla. The program was wonderful, challenging enough to help me grow my minimal facility with Spanish, but not so overwhelming as to cause anxiety. The professors and staff were amazing. I don't have enough words in English, my native language, to praise them highly enough. They were warm, welcoming, patient, skilled, and light-hearted when needed. The vocabulary was interesting, the conversations authentic and engaging, and the light-hearted laughter made the inevitable mistakes teachable moments instead of blunders. I wouldn't hesitate to return. In fact, while one week provided an engaging experience, immersing oneself longer would yield greater results.

I traveled as a solo older woman to Mérida to attend Habla for 2 weeks over Navidad. It was a great experience. I chose to use the homestay experience and the hostess was an ambassador for the Yucatán state and Mexico. She was welcoming, her home was spotless, and she took me to many hidden gem restaurants to sample famous foods or made them herself. I tried sopa de lima, panuchos, salbutes, tacos de lengua ( I was intimidated but they were so delicious) tamales, marquesitas, and enchiladas. Mérida is an amazing city with a marvelous blend of old and new. There are so many things to see in el centro and many museums. Uber is easy to use, and I never once felt unsafe.
The school was amazing, welcoming and professional. The communication before I arrived was top notch and nothing was left unanswered. Once at the school, I loved the theme and the literature that accompanied it each week. Students were grouped by ability, however the school was flexible in adjusting the initial groups. The school encouraged conversation at each level and incorporated creative responses through art and drama. Each level had a grammar theme which was a incorporated through the readings and direct instruction. The week ended with an entire school presentation with each group from children through all the adult levels sharing (of course supported by the amazing teachers). As I reflect on my experience I can whole heartedly say I had fun, I learned a lot, and I enjoyed the teachers, staff, and fellow students I met at the school.
I cannot recommend this school enough. Do not fear traveling to Mérida as a solo woman, as it is a safe city and the school will support you in every way.

My 13 year old daughter and I are planing to spend the last week of July in the city center and attend your school for Spanish lessons. How far are you from the city center? We will probable take a taxi to the school.

Hola Tracey, we are happy that you will join us this Summer. I recommend the first day to take a taxi to school. Ana will send you before your classes start an email with directions on how to get to Habla for the taxi driver. It is not hard to get here from downtown. Once you know your way you can decide if you want to walk or take a cab or ride the bus. By taxi it will take, depending in what part of downtown you are staying, about 10 to 15 minutes. Some people have been taking Uber. Let me know if you have any questions, you can email us! Saludos Marimar

Hi, I was wondering how you felt about the school's location outside the city center. Did this affect your ability to experience Merida? Thanks.
