Second time and hope to return again!
Aug 2021
Habla is an amazing place to learn Spanish! I came first in 2019 and returned this year to continue learning. Class sizes are kept small so each student can receive individual attention. As a PhD candidate and university instructor, I've had a LOT of different educational experiences, including other language programs. My experiences at Habla are among the best I have ever had - I LOVE that they fully immerse us in the language, culture, and food of the region!

I much prefer the in-person experience (I believe they were shut down for several months during the COVID-19 pandemic) and am always happy to eat the delicious meals provided for breakfast and lunch. Their curricula is cutting-edge and full of activities - reading, writing, speaking, and even drawing and singing! - that make learning a fun and engaging experience. I also think their prices are very reasonable, especially because they include two meals and additional activities.

This time I also took advantage of their homestay option. I was placed with an amazing family with three kids, and I immediately felt like a part of the family! They were happy to provide information about fun things to do in the area, always made sure I had enough to eat and plenty of water for my travel bottle, and drove me to and from Habla, making sure I did not get lost. They provided a key so I could keep my own hours, and having a private bathroom and A/C in my room was much appreciated :)

I stayed for two weeks this time, and plan to continue returning to Habla in the future to maintain and improve my competency. Everyone is kind, considerate, helpful, and fun - they even helped me find a place to stay for the next stop on my journey!

I look forward to returning every year to renew our friendships y practicar mi Espanol mas! (Porque necisito practicar mas, claro :) y a veces aprendir un poco mas Maya!) Abrazos y besos mis amiges!

Frustrating
Mar 2020 • Solo
Find another school. This one seems to just want to fleece you. Instead of giving me a teacher at my level they put me in a tiny class that had been in session for a week. They did not teach the basics. Even counting. Had a three week immersion scheduled. Quit after 2 in frustration. They refused to refund full amount of week not used. The whole org seems a bit shady.

Do not stay with a host family. They did not provide any meals as described by school and were resentful that a stranger was in their house. They made no attempt to hide it. Airb&b is a way better experience. Left home stay after a week. Another person at the school had an even more awful experience and also left early
In short, not about learning but your money. It was a frustrating and wasteful experience.

Hola SoloTraveler1039, we're afraid you have commented on the wrong school's page. We haven't been open for in-person immersion classes or homestays since March of last year. Still, we're so sorry you had such a negative experience in Mérida and are more than happy to welcome you to Habla in the future. We kindly ask you to remove your comment and direct it to the school you are referencing above. ¡Gracias!

Individualized and Fantastic!
Aug 2020 • Family
My daughter and her cousin take Spanish lessons together virtually (one girl in Iowa, one girl in Tennessee!) and the experience has been amazing! They are just completing their 4th consecutive month together! Valentina is incredible with children; makes their learning fun, and the girls have learned so much in a short time. I can not recommend this program more!

¡Que experiencia maravillosa!
Jun 2020 • Family
Last summer my family had such a great time learning Spanish at Habla. My two teen daughters were in a class with two other teenage girls, and made fast friends. This summer we were able to arrange for these girls to have on-line lessons together—2 girls in Tennessee, 1 girl in New Mexico, 1 girl in Bangkok, Thailand, and their wonderful teacher from Habla in Merida! The school was more than accommodating to make this happen (the time change was tricky), the teacher was better than the best and made learning Spanish really fun for these girls, and it was especially great to listen in on the classes and hear these teen girls talking and in such a supportive learning environment. When those session had to end due to other family obligations, my youngest daughter begged to continue her classes and so we signed her up for more with her cousin in Iowa. I myself had several sessions with a friend in Louisiana. Oh my goodness, what a wonderful experience for all of us — from age 12 to 40-something ; ). The teachers are really the very best, and I am so thankful for being able to learn from them at Habla — both in person and virtually.

Thank you so much for your detailed review! We are so glad your family has been able to enjoy both our in-person and online classes. Our teachers work so hard to plan meaningful, dynamic classes. Thank you for recognizing everything they do!

Great Spanish immersion experience
Jan 2020
I spent 3 weeks taking classes at Habla in January 2020. The teachers, support staff, and my host family were all superb! I have done other immersion programs in Mexico and this one was definitely up to par. The school and host families are in a quiet and very safe part of town which was nice because the city center is a little hectic and always packed with people. It's a short bus or Uber ride to the center to see the sights and, when you have had your fill, nice to return home.
My teacher Lee was wonderful, so enthusiastic and encouraging. She found a way to introduce us to Mexican literature while still covering various grammatical subjects. She helped me finally understand all the different tenses of the subjunctive. The support staff at the school, from Ana to the cook Reina, were all so friendly and helpful.
And they placed me with the perfect host, Elizabeth. We did so much together - yoga classes, meals out with friends, evening walks with her dogs, pedicures, and of course many delicious home cooked Yucatecan meals. I felt very at home there.
I highly recommend Habla if you are looking for a immersion program in Merida.

Habla Online Classes, a better-late-than-never review!
Aug 2019
After a magical visit to study at Habla in Mérida for a week in March 2019, my 15 year old son signed up for online lessons in August with Habla Online. I hadn't written a review earlier, because truthfully I wanted to have his teacher all to himself again when we decided to do more online classes. (Selfish that I wanted to keep this all to myself.) Habla staff will ask you what you would like to learn. The teachers have a wealth of qualifications with different focuses, so it will not be easy to chose when they ask you which teacher you'd like to learn with. The classes are culturally rich and creative activity-based. They have different types of classes depending on age and interest. In my son's case, there was structure and a set of material to cover, but also a lot of room for creativity, so you learn culture and language in a creative way, much as you do in their regular classroom methods. My son did a set of 24 classes in the summer in one month -- topics ranged from Yucatecan food, día de muertos, to Argentine writer who focused on science fiction. (By the way, some of these topics found their way into his regular school work in 9th grade, which shows how he retained what he learned). Habla seems to produce original materials to be able to teach in the way they think it's most effective and it's true for their online classes as well. I would recommend their online classes 100%.

Great language and culture school in the land of the Maya
Mar 2020
Habla is truly a very special language and culture school. I attended in early March and found the instruction to be excellent, the approaches of each instructor creative and energizing, the communal spirit so welcoming and encouraging, the food (pre-class fruit and treats, Yucatan specialties for lunch) excellent, the setting comfortable and cool despite the heat of Merida, the field trips interesting and the individual attention of teachers, administrators and staff so encouraging. The teachers discouraged comparisons between students and helped each of us to feel capable of speaking, reading and writing in the language. I learned so much in two weeks. I have attended other immersion programs in Mexico and South America but Habla brings all of this together in a way that worked perfectly for me. Merida is also such a wonderful city and the surrounding areas, ruins, cenotes and the Caribbean were easy to access. Living and studying Spanish in the land of the Maya was such a special experience. I will definitely return to Habla.

Habla: Supportive and fun learning environment- great teachers and individualized learning
Mar 2020
I enjoyed a wonderful learning experience March 2020 at Habla in Merida. The instructors were really good, connected learning Spanish to daily life, and created a fun, supportive learning environment. I'm excited to plan a return trip next year, and plan to enroll in online learning via Habla yet this year. Merida is a beautiful city with so much history, cultural and wonderful food.

Phenomenal!
Aug 2019
I spent a full month at Habla in August of 2019. I have heard it can get very busy during the summer, but in August there were only a handful of students each week at most which made for a nice learning environment. I really could not have asked for a better experience. Not only will you learn a lot of Spanish every week but the instructors will teach you through immersive learning about culture, arts, food, history, or whatever you show an interest in. My instructors were Joel, Alejo, Lucero, Yazmín and Nena who were all amazing and unforgettable people. In addition, Ana María and Silvia were so helpful for coordinating my trip and they will help you with scheduling tours if you want to go see something during the weekend (there is plenty to see & do in and around Merida!). Not to mention Reina will make you some AMAZING food.

I chose the homestay option where I stayed with Doña Magi & her family for the whole experience and I could not recommend it more. I had a lot of additional Spanish practice by staying with a family and they also made some incredible food!

I would recommend Habla for just about anyone. I even hope to go back myself someday.

Learning Spanish at Habla
Jan 2020
My husband and I did a two week intermediate Spanish immersion class at Habla and it far exceeded our very high expectations. The school is amazing, but the teachers are the true heart of the school. I got to meet an intelectual anarchist, eat delicious food and learn more spanish in two weeks than I thought possible. All our teachers had the true gift of teaching. Everyone that works there feels like they love their job and it shows. Another unexpected benefit was the other students. Everyone was so interesting and fun to learn with. I highly recommend Habla to any level of Spanish learner.
