Loved my experience!
Jul 2021
I loved my experience at La Calle! Going into it, I knew a good amount of Spanish, but was struggling to actually speak. The teachers made class fun and exciting, and progressed through new material in a manageable but challenging way. I was there for three weeks and made a lot of friends with fellow students. I highly recommend doing the more intensive classes, as this really pushed my Spanish to the next level. The pool is also gorgeous and a great place to relax after class. Overall, a great experience!

Disappointed
Feb 2020 • Couples
We had a good experience in the Beginner class at Calle the year prior. This was not.

My wife and I returned 14 months later for the intermediate class. Upon arrival we received news that there was no group class at our intermediate level. We were disappointed. Particularly, having made arrangement a month in advance and even underwent taking the hour long pretest and emailing the director of our needs.

Semi-private classes were the only recommendation due to our level, we were told.

That was attempted in earnest for part two days; learned absolutely nothing; it was costly.
The Instructor wrote nothing on the board the first, assigned homework but then did not go over it the second day.
We wondered if the teacher was unsure of herself or plainly disinterested as she used her mobile phone more than several times during the class.

My wife complained to the director by email, requesting another class option. We subsequently left when no other options were presented. We understand the student-availability needed for group class, but Calle did not handle this well, in our opinion, and gave no other useful options.

As for us, thankfully Merida is a nice size city. We resourcefully found another Spanish language school that offered a class at the solid intermediate level, of high quality.

Hola Charles y Alicia Thank you for your comments. It is important to tell to the person who read Alicia and Charles comment that we are a school who takes seriously the teaching pedagogy and we try to adapt as much as possible to the students request even if what they ask is very specific as in Alicia and Charles case. If the person who reads this comment wants to know more why Charles and Alicia were disappointed with their second time at our school, here they have an extensive explanation of what happened according to the perspective of the school 1) Alicia and Charles said: Upon arrival we received news that there was no group class at our intermediate level. The school version: Alicia and Charles had requested by email private lessons for their first week because they were arriving at the middle of the week, so it is not true that at their arrival they received the bad news that there was no group with your level. Students who arrive in the middle of the week, it is difficult to integrate them into a group that started on a Monday. 2) Alicia and Charles said: “Semi-private classes were the only recommendation due to our level, we were told.” The school version: Alicia and Charles are a couple who always had requested to be together in a group even if they do not had the same level. Carlos has a beginner level and Alicia has and advance beginner level. We remind to our clients that we do not mix levels. We can put people with a different level (if the difference is small) in a private group only if the clients request to be together even after a suggestion from the teachers that it is better to not be together. We assure all students that they will be evaluated and placed in groups that correspond to their level. 3) Alicia and Charles said: We learned absolutely nothing; it was costly. The Instructor wrote nothing on the board … was unsure of herself or plainly disinterested It is important to explain that Alicia and Charles just wanted to be with the same teacher they had 14 months ago. This teacher was also their online teacher. They told us that they just can learn with him. They were not happy when we told them that this teacher was not available. 14 months ago, the same situation occurred. One day they had a different teacher and they were not happy saying that this new teacher was terrible. As a school who takes seriously the teaching pedagogy, we sell the school method. Our teachers are trained with the method and documents of the school to ensure a quality of teaching no matter who your teacher is. All our teachers work together and proof of this is that the teacher with whom they wanted to be and was not available, worked with the other teacher to do the study program. They told us that they were not learning because they wanted to learn advanced grammar concepts even if they had a beginner level. Finally, our teachers are always in constant use of the board and never use their cell phones in class. Our classrooms always have open doors, so it's easy to see that this is true. 4) Charles said: My wife complained to the director by email, requesting another class option. We subsequently left when no other options were presented. The school version: We had proposed them to continue with the private lessons because they wanted to be together and they were complaining about the program. They were the ones who decide to not continue with the school because they were not happy with the teacher’s job. We totally understand that there could be people who don’t like our teaching method. What we can assure you is that we will do all that is in our hands to propose something adapted to the needs of the students without compromising the quality of the courses. Unfortunately Alicia and Carlos felt cheated even if every day we were in constant communication explaining them their options.

Best Spanish school in Mérida
Jan 2020 • Solo
I stayed here for 2 weeks with no skills in Spanish. After the 2 weeks I was able to communicate in the language! Alejandra was the perfect teacher with a lot of patient and varied lessons every day. Very well organized and everyone working here is always friendly and helpful! Enjoyed the delicious food in the small restaurant which is in the school. Preferred, that there has been also „older“ students. Regret that I could not stay longer!

I was unhappy with the class.
Dec 2019 • Solo
I paid for 2 weeks in advance. The first 2 classes I went to I did not learn anything new. They would not move me into another class and told me to keep with the class they put me in. I felt so bored I would not return. When I asked for my money back I got less than 40% of what I paid. Perhaps if you dont know Spanish you may think this a good option but there are many other places in town to learn. I do not recommend La Calle.Am truly unable to believe the good reviews of this place. Both as a school and a business.

Hola Jody Thank you for your comment. It helps us to explain to future students how the school works. Sorry if this comment is a bit long, but we invite the people who want to know how we work to take a few minutes to read this answer to Jody’s comment. STUDENT ASSESSMENT We are a school specialize in a method that helps students to improve their oral skills to be able to communicate and speak in Spanish regardless their level. There is a written test and an oral test to put the students in the correct class with other people who have the same level. We do not mix levels. Our team of teachers, each one with years of experience are very careful to asses each student level. Jody, you had studied previously in other schools and we understand that could be frustrating to feel that you are repeating the same things that you studied before. But when you arrived to our school, unfortunately you weren’t able to say any word in Spanish, to say simple sentence and to ask and understand simple questions to interact with other people. 3 different teachers had agree that you were beginner and the best for you was to put you in a class where you can start using in the oral way what you have learned. The teacher that you had the first 2 days, said that what you did the first 2 days of classes was good for you. Unfortunately, Jody, you had a different opinion and you wanted to be in a higher level. We didn´t move you to another class, even if we had places available, because that wouldn’t be professional for you and not be fair for the other students to put them with a student who doesn’t belong to their level. CANCELLATION POLICIES When a student does an enrolment with us, we ask to the student to commit for at least one week. If a student pays in advance more than one week but decide to not continue with the classes, the school refunds 100% of the payment that we have receive for the weeks that the student hasn’t done. If a student start one week and during the week decide not to finish the week, we do not refund the remaining days of the week that has started Jody, once you told us that you didn’t want to continue with the classes, we didn’t have a problem to refund you your second week that you had already paid. We didn’t refund you the 3 days that you decided not to come during your first week. It is important to tell, Jody, that you didn’t register with us directly; you did it with an agency. If the agency charged you an extra commission, unfortunately, we as a school we cannot refund you what you have paid to the agency. But it is important to tell to the people that the school refunds 100% for the weeks that a student do not do, as we did with you. LEVELS Every week we have all levels in Spanish, from complete beginners to high advance levels. A prove that we have all levels is that we have students who have never studied before and students who are even Spanish teachers in their country. We have a team of 6 teachers who works full time and who gives classes in the morning and in the afternoon. That’s another prove that we have different levels. If some of you want to know more about our teaching method, we will be glad to explain you how we work. What LA CALLE Spanish school offers you is a school with 9 years of experience with a team of teachers (the most experienced teacher has 20 years of experience and the least experienced has 3 years of experience teaching Spanish to adults) who assess every detail to put you in the correct class where you will gain confidence, fluency and where you are going to perfect your Spanish. Unfortunately we could not convice Jody that she was in the correct class, but we are proud to know that we have satisfied 99% of the students and proof of this are the positive comments we have in different forums and social networks. Gracias

My 3rd time!
Nov 2019 • Business
This was my third visit to La Calle. I have attended both locations and the new location offers a good walk for walk minded people!
The new facility is fantastic! The classrooms are bright with good natural light and are well ventilated. This keeps you cool and comfortable at all times for the best learning environment. The pool is an attraction but more importantly the common space with the bistro is where it happens! As well, a great kitchen and staff welcome you daily like you are good friends or family. The food and snacks are prepared onsite with fresh, local ingredients.
The staff - both ‘profesors’ and ‘maestros’ - what to say? They are engaging, professional and patient. They use a variety of teaching activities. Everyone is friendly and welcoming.
Ok - don’t hesitate. Use this school in this fantastic historical community. You will be pleased with your choice and you will learn Spanish. Do not hold back!
Learning Spanish is about taking the risk. Engage often and listen intently. Focus on the rhythms of the language and watch your teacher for other aspects of communicating such as body language and facial expressions. Hold firm if you don’t understand a task or activity. Don’t be afraid to ask for repetition or request someone to speak slower. You will be frustrated at times but this is part of the learning process. Remember, learning something new is rewarding and good for you in so many ways.
Take the risk! La Calle will not disappoint.

Great conversations, cultural and educational experience!
Jul 2019
I highly recommend La Calle Spanish School! The classes are great for getting really comfortable with conversing in Spanish. I personally appreciated that there wasn’t a strict “set curriculum”. I felt that it was a fun and interesting combination of conversing in a natural way, like you would with friends, while learning a new language. I found it to be more interesting than learning rote out of a textbook. I was there for four weeks and each week was different. I was continually learning new concepts while also reviewing things that I needed to work on.
All of the teachers and staff are friendly, supportive and all around great people! The building is lovely, the food at the café is delicious and the pool is very inviting! They also offer small group or private classes at very reasonable rates if there is something specific that you want to cover. There are also various social and cultural activities available. Cooking classes, walking tours of the city, etc. Raul is local tour guide who is super knowledgeable and when you take a tour with him it is like having a lesson and excursion in one!
I really hope that I get the opportunity to return again soon!

La Calle: Best Spanish School in Merida!
Apr 2019 • Solo
I traveled solo to Merida for the specific purpose of going to La Calle Spanish school so as to immerse myself in Spanish. Previously, a concierge at the Westin in Cancun, Eliana, took time to help me locate a good Spanish school in a safe city in Mexico, and it seemed that La Calle would serve my needs. Thanks to Eliana, I followed up on her research and decided that was the place for me.

I had never been to Merida. The photos on-line looked lovely, and there were numerous recommendations for going there. The school La Calle offered exactly the same- nice photos, many of the English speaking hotels recommended it, my Cancun concierge had found only good things about it... so I went.

It was the most wonderful experience! I had been afraid I would be overwhelmed and that it would be way over my head, however, the entire staff made me feel so welcomed and were so patient with me, and I actually hope to go back again next year.

I went to Merida knowing SOME Spanish words and verbs and I could understand simple written and spoken sentences, however I was not able to put a sentence together (I’d had about 20 weeks of Community Ed classes.) By the end of the 1st week at La Calle I could actually speak a little! I was so encouraged!! And I wish I could have stayed another week which would have kept the ball rolling, but I did not have that time available to me.

There were so many positive things that made my solo trip to Merida enjoyable, but I would begin by thanking the entire staff at La Calle, especially my teacher Sandra, for making me feel comfortable, welcomed and who patiently encouraged me to learn. The owners Rachel and Augustine run a great, fun program which incorporated fun quizes/games which stimulate words and conversation. Each 4 hour class went by like 2, and before I knew it, it was time to go. But to top that off, La Calle has an in-house restaurant called Punto de Reunion which provided lunch (and dinners) to any one who wanted to stay. For 85 pesos you were provided a large, delicious, beautiful meal. Chefs Rosa and Amanda are outstanding. After lunch you could also SWIM IN THE POOL which is a good size, has grass around it, and lounge chairs! La Calle was just the best. I met so many nice people from a wide variety of countries, and it was enjoyable getting to know them and do things after class with them.

Merida itself is just a lovely city with lovely people. The city is VERY clean, tranquil, safe, and I walked the Paseo de Montejo many times (Saturday night is very popular for strolling.) The Centro district was also great place for people watching and shopping, and you can find English speaking taxi drivers who are happy to provide private tours to Mayan ruins and cenotes about an hour or so away. My particular driver took me to the pueblo Becal to see the process of, and buy, a finely made beach hat made of softened palm leaves. My taxi driver Wilbert was the best!!

Having recounted some of my wonderful trip now makes me want to go back sooner than later! I was there the first week of April when the daytime temps were 99 degrees F, but there was ALWAYS a nice breeze if you are not inside. The constant breeze made for gorgeous nightly strolls. I want to try going there in Jan/Feb next, but if you are not afraid of some breezy heat, the 1st week of April was not crowded.

Plus there are many ex-pats who have relocated to Merida, or whom have a 2nd residence there. So you still have a variety of places to go and jump into an English speaking crowd. My lovely hotel, the Westin, was near to Hennessey’s Pub so I was able to keep up with Spartan basketball too.

Hope this all helps in some way for those thinking of going to Merida or La Calle. I normally travel to resort destinations in MX, and Merida was a little jewel I found and hope you will enjoy it too. My best to the success of La Calle y buena suerte Rachel, Augustino,Sandra, Rosa y Amanda tambien. Adios!

Best place to learn
Dec 2018 • Solo
I spent one week here in December 2018. Everyone teaching there is amazing! The whole school is welcoming and has a relaxed atmosphere. It's a speak spanish only environment which I found great and really helped me to learn quickly! The group classes were fantastic, never boring and learnt so much. And as a solo traveller made great friends. I also took one-to-one sessions which were tailored to my specific medical language needs and really worth doing. Overall if you are looking for a place in Merida to learn Spanish, with wonderful people, an encouraging atmosphere and delicious food... this is the place for you.

I spent a week at La calle learning Spanish and loved it! The teachers and staff are very friendly and the teaching is phenomenal. Our group classes were conversation-based and our teacher always came up with motivating topics. My Spanish improved a lot in just 5 days. Thank you, La calle!
