So glad we came to this beach. It’s perfect!!! Clear water, soft sand, shops, and restaurants. You won’t be disappointed if you spend a beach day here. It was just what we needed since our resort beach in the riviera maya was unusable due to seaweed.

Beautiful beach, great massage upstairs at Chambo, and ice cream vendors walking around for the kids. Overall, it was a great day and one of the best beaches in Mexico…not much algae.:-)

It is crowded and very noisy. The water is beautiful but there still is seaweed. I wanted to relax but there is no way. Multiple sources of loud music, constant people selling things, most annoying believe it or not was the popsicle people, ringing the bell alone is not enough to bother me but constantly hitting a piece of metal on metal and multiple carts just put me over the edge. Regarding the crowds, the hotel guests were only a small percentage of the people, there are many people who come over for the day and they come to party. I would rather go to not as nice of a beach with less noise and fewer people.

This place sucks. The water is clear and beautiful, the people are rude and ready to take advantage of you. It’s just a tacky beach.

My husband and I travelled to Isla Mujeres as part of a sailing cruise and we had so much fun! We had over 2.5 hours to explore the island. We did some shopping, started walking South but then quickly realized it was just way to hot! The day we went was so hot we could feel the heat radiating off of the pavement. So we took our tour guides advice and directions and found ourselves swimming at Playa Norte. Walking up to the beach you just see the crystal blue water of the ocean and it was definitely inviting!
We rented two beach chairs and umbrella from "Felipez Water Sports Center" just so we had somewhere to sit and drop our stuff while we swam. A gentleman named Reuben worked there, and he was so kind! He took our drink and food orders and was very quick in bringing it to us. He made sure we were taken care of to say the least! It was nice having a spot to relax as the beach is quite full due to hotels in the area plus tourism. There was barely anyone swimming in the water or at least it didn't seem like it because the swimming area is very big!
We had a wonderful time relaxing at Playa Norte, and maybe we will get to check out the Southernmost point the next time we travel to Isla Mujeres :)

Sadly it must be reported that Isla Mujeres if lost and gone forever. We have visited the island many times over the years and were looking forward to this visit. Sadly the experience has been soured. We have always enjoyed renting a golf cart and the drive around the island and the whole peaceful experience of the island. Now this is not possible due to the hordes of tourists descending on the island by the boatload every 30 minutes on Ultamar ferries. The streets were packed with golf carts and many of the roads were so packed that it was impossible to find parking place or an area to turn the cart around. Our favorite little beach side bar on Playa Lanchera, which in the past was our go to for a cold beer and snacks has now been turned into a rowdy beach club with payment demanded to enter and large boats packed with people dumping them out every few minutes. A quaint and peaceful little area ruined forever.
North Beach was impossible. Thousands and thousands or people, impossible to find golf cart parking, all the beach bars packed to overflowing and most of then charging cover charges on top of inflated food and drink prices. North Beach is now also ruined.
Sadly this will be our last visit to an island that we loved. It has gone the way of Tulum which is also a favorite place ruined by hordes of tourists and greedy locals.

We spent the afternoon here. We ate and drank at Chichi and Charlies and chilled in the water after that. Beach chairs are for rent ONLY! But you can avoid it and just hand it on the beach if you want. We went on a Sunday and the island as a whole was pretty busy compared to when we have been there on a week day.

What is the current situation at Playa Norte? We want to ferry over for the day, sit on the beach for the day without a mask, and would prefer to be topless too. We’ve got such great memories from prior years finding lounge chairs to rent, awesome conch ceviche, cold beer, topless and a very laid back vibe.

I visited in December however, I stayed at Mia Reef where chairs, umbrellas, drinks etc. are provided for free. You can obtain a day pass for a cost. In addition, we were not required to wear a mask on the beach. There are a variety of great restaurants where you can find food and great drinks. However, the topless thing 🤔I am not sure about. I saw many kids near Mia Reef so I would conclude it is not allowed near Mia Reef however, that may not be the case for everywhere. Also, the ferry is an easy way to arrive and there are many taxis to drop you off at the beach. Enjoy!

Is Playa Norte open to visit in December?
AstralTravel
Playa del Carmen, México787 contributions
If you are asking this because of the pandemic, yes it is open and I can't see why they would not allow tourists coming to visit.
You must have face masks at all times unless you are in the water or eating... at least for now. Maybe in December things will be different.
I just went there last week and it's a dream. Also not a lot of people so you have plenty of space to enjoy and to practice social distance if you are worried about that.

Public Beaches are not open at this time, if you want to swimm in the beach it has to be through direct axcess by your hotel resort, we stay in isla mujeres in hotel belo and we were able to enjoy the beach but we drove to playa norte and the other public beaches and they were all closed. You will still have a great time.

If you want to be in town, you would not need a golf cart and I would recommend Hotel Almendros. It has a nice pool in the middle of all the rooms. If you want something more quite, they have a 2nd level. It’s a wonderful place with a great staff.

Do they take credit card at restaurants and golf cart rentals or only cash ? Do we need to book the golf carts ahead of time or can we just show up one day and there should be one available ?

We found it best to have cash. We booked our golf cart right on the ferry and paid cash. All the golf cart companies charge about the same. We booked on the ferry because it was super convenient. We didn't have an issue finding the golf cart rental place. Something interesting we found out about credit cards machines there.....they get spotty signals and they don't always work. We did pay for the ferry on a credit card.
