When on Isla Mujeres, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Women’s Bead Cooperative! 💖
A business owned by women, all beauties are created by women, and 80% of the monies are returned to the woman whom created the beautiful work of jewelry art. 💝

They have a wide variety of items and many different styles and colors of each item. Each piece is creative and artistic. Definitely time well spent to admire and purchase the work of these local women.

Little shop where local women learn to make jewelry to become more self sufficient. They receive a portion of the profits from their work. Beautiful earrings, bracelets, and necklaces. Great product for a great cause!

I visited this shop recently. Although the women were busy with their beadwork, they were very helpful and friendly. There are so many necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and other beaded work that I could have spent several hours there. I bought a variety of items and each has a unique beading style. The prices were very reasonable. I definitely recommend this to anyone who appreciates hand-beaded work. I will return.

Visited after seeing previous reviews on Tripadvisor. The co-operative has an extensive display of handcrafted goods mostly suitable for women and girls (i.e., bracelets and necklaces). This is a very worthwhile cause that deserves to be well-supported by tourists to the island

Wanted to stop here when I read about it.
One of a kind pieces and each item has the name of the woman who created it. They made a collar for RBG!

We went by as we saw it on TripAdvisor’s list of things to see. We ended up buying 3 necklaces. Then my husband had a custom piece made. He put in his order and picked up the next morning. Beautiful work and going to a great cause. A must see.

How did you get there? On foot or by golf cart? I will be travelling with my teenaged daughter and want to know if it's safe to walk there.

Sorry for late reply. Like others said depends where you are staying. We found Isla to be very safe. We took taxis for the first few days and then opted to rent a golf cart for 5 + days. We stayed in a condo that was located toward the south part of the island while we could walk, take taxis and even ride a bike if we bothered to find out where we could get one, we had 6 year old twins and found that renting the golf cart worked well as it gave us flexibility. We did not need to tell a taxi where we wanted to go, we could drive and stop where we wanted to. East coast is very lovely. Beading coop is towards Punta Sur, while you only need to visit this area once (Mango café is in this general area) if you are staying a while and like to move around a bit, we really enjoyed the road along the east coast rather than the one facing Cancun (West coast). Hope this helps. Enjoy your time on Isla!

I just saw your post! The bead coop is in La Gloria on the same piece of land as the Cruz Roja (Red Cross). Take the eastern Caribbean road past La Gloria and when you come to a divided road that goes east/west, (right before the new cemetery) turn right and go a couple of blocks and the cooperative will be on your right. If you go to our FB page, Isla Mujeres Women's Bead Coop, there is a map on the top of the page.

It is better for the women in the cooperative to make sales in pesos, so that is the preferred payment. But if you only have dollars, they will accept those too! The prices are marked in pesos but they can do a dollar to peso exchange. We look forward to seeing you at the cooperative! Our hours at M- S, 9 am - 5 pm. Hasta pronto!

How far are you from the ferry terminal?
Karen R
Cleveland, OH52 contributions
The bead cooperative is about 2 miles from the ferry terminal. There are taxi's right at the terminal and just tell them you are going to the "la tienda de artesenias al lado de la Cruz Roja en la Gloria"... the cooperative next to the Red Cross in La Gloria.

Are you open on Sunday's?
Karen R

Generally the cooperative is open Monday through Fridays, 9 -4. There are sometimes women beading in the coop however on a Sunday, so if you are on Isla, it's worth stopping by to see. They will welcome you!
