Went on a whale shark tour with Blue H2o and I would like to give them my best review. We were 7 people that planned to go, but because both my kids got ear infections, we had to split and ended up going on 3 different tours, and all of us had amazing trips. Jose, my contact at Blue H2o, was so helpful and so flexible. I had to cancel the first tour because of my oldest son and his ears. Then a storm was coming and then my other son got ear infection and I had to cancel him. And all the way Jose did eveything he could, so we could go separately and kept me in the loop about thw weather. It was obvious he wanted us to have the best tour with the best weather and with best chances of seeing whale sharks, so we have been on contact daily for weeks (we are travelling for 2 months, so no rush with the tour).

The tours we were on were amazing. The crew was fantastic and very professional. We all felt in such good hands and really felt they wanted to give us a good tour. They made sure we would go in the water, right in front of the whale shark, so we got to see the shark really close from both the front, side and above. I had 2 really good jumps in the water.

This tour was once in a lifetime for us, so I spend a lot of time researching tour agencies to make sure we went with the best company, and I am so glad I did this research and went with Blue H2o. Blue H2o has both a cancellation policy and a whale shark guarantee - be aware that most tour companies don´t have this, and it is something I would really recommend, because you never know what is going to happend and each day on the water is different.

I took a whale shark tour in late August 2022 and had a fantastic time. There was a group of 3, a group of 2 and 5 solo travelers. We were all picked up at our hotels and then driven the the pier where we quickly hopped on our small boat and headed out. The crew manages our expectations by sharing recent whale shark volumes and explaining that we might only have 1 swim or as many as 3. We were fortunate to get 3! Our guide in the water, Matteo, made sure everyone (humans and whale sharks) were safe. He ensured we had a good viewing, offered tips and also took amazing photos and video. After, we went to nearby Isla Mujeres for a really nice lunch in a beautiful setting and then back to the dock and drive back. It was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend this experienced, knowledgeable company which I found via recommendations in the Scuba community.

Excellent tour with awesome and friendly guides! Each person gets to do 2-4 passes with the whalesharks depending on conditions and each pass lasts about 5-10 minutes. Plenty of time to see the sharks up close and get videos!

Things to know before hand:
You have to take a 30 minute ferry from Cozumel to the mainland then take a 40-60 minute bus to Cancun then take a 1 hour 20 min boat ride to get to the whalesharks. This is an extremely long time to travel and the boat ride can be extremely rough depending on the conditions. If you're prone to seasickness or aren't in fair health, the boat ride might be too much for you. We sat in the front of the boat to allow more elderly passengers sit more comfortably in the back, where there is less bouncing, and we were pretty beat up the next day. Our backs and butts were pretty sore the next day from bouncing on the waves for 3 hours, some of the larger waves can actually lift you in the air a couple inches from your seat. Overall we thought it was worth the experience! You can only swim with whalesharks in a few places around the world and the rest period afterwards at Isla Mujeres where we got to relax in a shallow beach with some beer and ceviche was beautiful. We would highly recommend this company if you're looking to do a whaleshark tour from Cozumel!

We had a group of 8 people and BlueH20/Ocean Tours Riviera Maya was so accommodating! Their communication while pre-booking the trip was incredible. They communicated everything we would need and even checked in a few days before our trip to confirm everything and make sure they had it correct. Since we had a larger group, they worked with us and gave us a small discount. We didn't even ask for it! They provide transportation to and from the excursion, a small breakfast, lunch and a snack at the Isla Mujeres. The tour was absolutely incredible. Our tour guide, Diana, loved her job and it showed! Our boat captain,Sergio, was always smiling, played great music and even let us take a 3rd jump with the whale sharks. When you are finished with the whale sharks they take you to the Isla of Mujeres for snorkeling. This is an excursion I would recommend to EVERYONE! Swimming next to a whale shark was an amazing experience.

This was an experience of a lifetime!

We had an excellent Whale Shark tour with Blue H2o. There were only ten guests on our boat and only two went in the water at a time with our guide, Miguel, to swim with the sharks. We did a previous whale shark dive in Australia, and everyone on the boat jumped in the water with the fish at once. It was a chaos of fins and bubbles! With Blue H2o we were able to swim peacefully with the fish. Blue H2o was very conscientious about keeping us and the whale sharks safe. We were well instructed about how to swim with the sharks and what toxic sunscreens and perfumes not to wear during the dives - for the fishes' sake. Miguel also got FANTASTIC video of everyone during their dives so we could concentrate on the fish. They were well organized and made the whole experience fantastic.

My boyfriend and I traveled to Cozumel for the first time, and he was very adamant about doing a whale shark snorkel. I was very apprehensive because of the amount of travel we would have to put into this excursion. However, I am SO GRATEFUL we did this because not only was it the best experience of our trip but truly something we will remember for the rest of our lives. John, Mateo, and the captain went absolutely above and beyond to give us an incredible experience. John met us on the ferry in Cozumel and stayed with us the entire travel time getting to the boat, which eased every nerve of mine. The snorkel itself was incredible and we were able to see and swim with a TON of large whale sharks. Mateo captures amazing footage for an affordable price. I unfortunately fed the fish twice while out on the boat🥴 But John, Mateo, and the captain treated me like family. They got me water, poured water over my head, and even cut me up some melon to help soothe my stomach. I felt better and was able to continue the snorkels just fine! Everyone was friendly, attentive, and did everything in their power to ensure we had an amazing time. If you are on the fence about this, you MUST DO IT! This is a once in a lifetime opportunity with a Grade A company!

wow where do i begin! this is nothing like the whale shark experience in oslob or maldives; this is far superior. we got to see at least 10 whale sharks just casually hanging around. you can get VERY up close and personal with the whale sharks (up to 5 ft respectively). you can swim with the whale sharks for as long as you can keep up. these friendly giants are absolutely breathtaking. john and mateo are both extremely knowledgeable about the whale sharks and are there to make sure you have a good time. they make sure you’re satisfied with the activity before leaving the site - which is roughly around 2-3 jumps, closer to 2 if other folks aren’t feeling well. i probably spent about 2 full minutes in total swimming with them and that felt like enough for a lifetime. tho i’d definitely try to go again if time permits.

as someone who loves taking their own photos … just get the photo package. don’t bring your own. the footage isn’t quite the same and you get to really enjoy your time with the whale sharks.

i wouldn’t recommend this tour for folks that get sea sick, no matter how cool it is. it’s a 1.5hr boat ride out to where the whale sharks hang out. the ride was choppy when we went (and it was a good day). and casually sitting in the rocky boat was problematic for the seasick folks. my friend took 4 dramamines and still felt ill. we had another throwing up off the side of the boat.

after the whale shark, we rode back to isla mujeres and had lunch in the water. it was the best ceviche i had the entire week i was in mexico and they made it directly on the boat.

huge shoutout to the team for doing this daily for tourists like us. thank you so much john, mateo, and our captain (G?) for such an awesome day and providing the highlight of our trip!!

When the group I travel with goes anywhere, we (group of 6-12) put in hours and hours of research into our trips. Blue H20 was one of the many companies we looked into for our Whale Shark excursion. We stayed at the Dreams resort on Cozumel, met John at the ferry to Playa De Carmen, then caught the bus over to Cancun to meet the boat. I would say the boat is around a 28 foot center counsole.

The boat ride out to the area was fairly smooth where we saw lots of turtles! Mateo spent most of the ride briefing our group about the rules and go/no go of what to do when in the water with the whale sharks. Most of the group is scuba divers, but we also had some snorkelers. Mateo does a great job capturing the videos and still pictures of the individuals while we're in the water. Basically, we had 10 people which broke down into five groups of two. One group was always sitting on the side of the boat ready to splash while the others were rotating around the console. We stayed out there for a few hours before ending the day at the party island in Cancun. The crew made fresh guac and ceviche for us.

***Note: If you need to use the restroom on while on that island, it was 20 pesos for some of the bathrooms. There was one for free that a group member found.***

We had a girl's birthday who was in our group that John got in the water with for some extra time! If you will be going out with someone whose birthday it is, please let John know up front!

They gave us a good deal on the photo package and of course had merch to sell. Overall, it was a great experience received by everyone in our group!

We don't normally visit the same place twice, but we would definitely recommend and/or use Blue H20 again for the whale shark encounter!

Our Whale Shark excursion was the most amazing experience I’ve ever had. John took us by the hand practically and guided us for 10 hours! When we arrived at the ferry in Cozumel, John was there waiting for us. He planned every moment precisely. We were picked up in Playa and offered a lunch (breakfast) which was a sandwich, apple juice, water, Twinkie and a banana. Had to pick up two more locations. The time to get there and back was very long. Ferry 40 minutes, van about an hour, boat an hour. You are only in the water with sharks for a few minutes with your partner and guide. BUT those few minutes are an experience of a lifetime. John is very knowledgeable about the sharks and the area. They take pictures and videos throughout the excursion and offer to sell for 50$. Worth it. Do it. All crew were very attentive to passenger needs. The captain gave us plenty of time with the whale sharks. I swam with them 4 times! I was in the water with two sharks at the same time. After the swim we were taken to a shallow area off the beach where many other boaters were doing the same. We got out of the boat and were offered sodas, beer, water. The crew prepared ceviche and guacamole. Delicious!!! Stayed there about 45 minutes. Perfect. We were then returned to the marina. The trip took us 13 hours to complete. John and Blue H2O made our trip just perfect. I would highly recommend using Blue H2O. Maybe you will get lucky to have John as your guide.

This was an incredible once in a Lifetime trip! The whole experience was amazing!! We didn’t just go out and look at the whale sharks, our guide took us along to make sure we swam right up next to them and as long as we could! They also took amazing underwater videos. I highly recommend!! Awesome experience and great travel guides!! They made fresh ceviche on the boat at Isla Mujeras and we swam around there in the beautiful water. We saw dolphins and turtles! Most memeorable trip I have ever taken!! Do it!!!!
