We experienced several rainy days and were looking for something to do indoors.
We paid $25 each for the chocolate tasting/making tour and felt for the time spent and the experience it was worth it. Stephanie did a great job of explaining the cocoa bean growing and chocolate making process. We enjoyed grinding the beans and making our own hot chocolate bars, as well as the chocolate sampling. Stephanie was very warm and engaging and we enjoyed spending the 2+ hours with her.
It is a very small operation - the “kitchen” where we made the hot chocolate and learned the process, another very small room where they make the chocolate they sell, another area where they wrap the chocolate and the store. There’s not much to see so it’s not really what I’d call a “tour” - you go to grind beans and have an interesting chocolate souvenir to take home. We’ve not visited the other chocolate maker on the island so can’t provide a comparison, but we enjoyed getting off the beaten path and didn’t mind that it wasn’t a big operation - and again, Stephanie was great!
I will also mention that up until COVID they had 13 employees but now they’re down to 4. I believe they don’t provide tours unless there is a reservation. Also, because of COVID they are limited to 6 people per tour so be sure to make a reservation in advance. And if you have the means, tip BIG. The wonderful people of Cozumel need help getting back on their feet with the lack of tourism.

We would highly recommend a visit to Kaokao Chocolates. I originally heard about Koakao from a former cruiser who had gone there with her family. It was interesting, hands-on, educational, and tasty!
Our instructor/guide was fabulous and did not push us to try anything we did not want to, but made his presentation so interesting that we wanted to! I definitely recommend. The only reason I gave it a 4 star was that we almost gave up on our visit because the first taxi driver we talked to wanted $80 because he said that he would have to wait for us. We gave it another try with a different driver who quoted us $12 which we took. Kaokao called a taxi for us when we were ready to leave and it literally took 5 minutes for them to arrive. Don't be taken advantage of because you are a tourist!

Last week we had the pleasure of visiting Kaokao Chocolate Factory and meeting the delightful owners and enjoyed a quick tour of the facilities. Then the highlight of the day was having Stephanie teach us the history of cacao tree and how chocolate is produced. We had the chance to grind our own beans and create our own chocolate bars.
I am especially interested in the Mayan way of using chocolate and how it has changed once Mexico was exposed sugar via the Spanish. I recommend that anyone interested in the history and variety of chocolate to visit Kaokao. The tasting alone was worth the price of admission! Simply delightufl!!!!

This tour was part of the City Highlights tour. I didn’t think this was even worth the stop. You received a 5 minute demonstration of how they grind beans and make chocolate and then go to the shop to purchase their products. The chocolate seemed pricey although they had many flavours you could taste test. I did buy some pure vanilla for a decent price.

We booked this the same day after our original cruise excursion was canceled due to rough water/winds. It was amazing! We had no idea what to expect and it was so much more involved and fun than we thought it would be! We got to learn about the entire chocolate making process, taste almost 30 different types/flavors of chocolate and even grind and make or own chocolate to take home. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a more traditional Mexican experience then the tourist traps at the shore!

We did a little research to do something fun for our 10th anniversary while we were ported in Cozumel. There was a closer company to the cruise terminal but was attracted by KaoKao Chocolate Factory because they offered a more in depth chocolate disk making experience. It was an easy and inexpensive 10 minute cab ride from the port. The staff was all very friendly and knowledgeable and Stephanie who was our guide was phenomenal! She was not only very informative but a true pleasure to be around. Her depth of knowledge on chocolate was impressive and her ability to explain it was equally so. You can definitely tell this is a locally owned and operated business! On top of all of that, as well as the delicious samples, Stephanie helped us find local authentic eatery and market that was the best food we ate by far in any of the ports we visited! If you get a chance to visit this gem of a place I absolutely recommend it 10/10!

This was an amazing tour! Very educational and fun. Stephanie was amazing as a guide. She was very knowledgeable about the whole process and very friendly and funny. It was reasonably priced and had lots of different products in the shop to purchase as souvenirs. We chose this tour because we were not interested in going to the beach as this is what we usually do in Cozumel. Definitely a different experience and would recommend!

We loved our tour here at the Kaokao factory!! You get to learn about the process of how they make chocolate, get to make your own chocolate, try different chocolates, and try a traditional Mayan chocolate beverage! Everything was DELICIOUS!!! Our tour guide Stephanie was fantastic 👏 She was very informative, funny, and friendly. If you are a chocolate lover, I definitely wouldn't miss this tour. Also, for Covid, they are following all the necessary precautions and procedures so please do not be afraid to book with them (each tour is basically private)! You will not regret it! & Stephanie, thank you so much for your hospitality and for providing a super fun day for us! We hope you enjoyed your birthday 🎂🎉

This experience was small and intimate. We were the only 2 people who were part of the 9am tour when we went. The place is not very good with the A/C, so dress lightly as it gets very warm. The staff was friendly, but definitely did not appear ready for us. However, the chocolate tea was delicious.

KaoKoa is a hidden gem within an authentic Cozumel neighborhood. A great way to view what Cozumel is ‘really’ like, outside of the tourist areas. We’re not genuinely the “tour” type of travelers however we did enjoy this tour, learning how chocolate originated and is made today. Our tour guide, Jafet was very knowledgeable and personable. We had a wonderful time from start to finish—-tasting chocolate and making our own to take with as a souvenir. Also has a nice little gift shop to purchase real Mexican chocolate & vanilla.
Note: If you enjoy walking (which we do), we walked from Palmar Condominiums to Kaokao in just under an hour. It’s probably about a 25 minute walk from the downtown cruise port/Ultramar ferry. Of course, there are taxis too (200 pesos from the Palmar Condos to KaoKao - an elderly traveler with us in her mid-70s took a taxi instead) but if you have the time, consider exploring the neighborhood on the way.

My kids are 7, 10 & 12...the chocolate company website does not recommend this activity for 12 and younger.
Do you think it is appropriate for a 7 year & 10 year old? If yes, did you book tickets in advance? We are coming off a cruise boat.
Thanks!

Hello, the first part of the activity is about listening and tasting and for some kids could be to much talking but if your kids are interested about the process and history then they won't have a problem. And yes you definitely need to book in advance specially if you have kids.

I believe it’s about an hour maybe a little longer. There’s a good presentation on the process of making chocolate and then you get to make it. Afterwards you can buy items in the gift shop.

Is the chocolate factory air conditioned?
Written April 28, 2019
Yes it was. They were very accommodating

Hi, can you please tell me where is the taxi that you referred to. Do I need to reserve the tickets prior to go to the chocolate factory or I can get tickets right at the entrance?
thank you!
Written December 2, 2017
Hello, the taxis we talk about in any one in town, the rates we published are the official ones and you will find taxis everywhere, if you are coming on a cruise ship there are a lot of taxis right outside the pier.
Since we have limited space we recommend to book in advance because reservations have priority over walk ins

Is this in Cozumel or Yucatan? When I booked it I chose things to do in Yucatan.
Written November 12, 2017
Cozumel is an island off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula across from Playa del Carmen. It is a 40 minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen and they leave every hour usually and there are a couple of ferry lines available.

Is it expensive to get to the tour from the port by taxi and how long does this take
Written May 29, 2017
We used Tours Plaza - Day Tours. Booked all from home and had a great tour of the island. The Chocolate Factory was one of many stops along the way. For the 4 hours (4 passengers) $100 total US and a great tour guide in the driver was included. Definitely would utilize again.

On our trip, we didn't come across any wine tasting opportunities. Unfortunately, wine just doesn't seem to be the thing to do in Cozumel. Tequila reigns supreme.
