I stayed in Cozumel for a month, and did my advanced open water training with Blue Magic. I continued diving with them several times afterward. The staff is very friendly and welcoming, and greeted each of us by name every outing. I borrowed/rented all of my equipment from them (it may have been included because I took a course with them) and it was in very good condition---I think the wetsuit may have been brand new. I dove with a couple of shops in Cozumel, and what you get for the money at Blue Magic is terrific. There are many dive shops in Cozumel. The reasons I chose Blue Magic were that it was a PADI 5-star shop, and that it is a shop that trains dive instructors. This meant that on most dives, not only would there be an experienced dive master, but there would likely be additional instructors or dive masters in training as well. Given my minimal experience, I wanted as many eyes on me as possible. My certification instructor, Mau (Mauricio) was thorough, careful, and paid good attention to detail. I felt like I was in safe hands with him. Confidence is key when you're learning. The scenery in Cozumel underwater is an embarrassment of riches. It didn't really matter where we went diving, it was always a great experience. That said, the wreck was pretty challenging, given my skill level and the currents around it. Blue Magic takes out small groups, I think the largest group I went with was 6 people. I was almost always on the dive boat "Mystique," crewed by Pato and Nelsy. They are very friendly, and clearly very good at preparing divers to get in the water, and then resetting gear between dives. I don't know how she does it but Nelsy can get several divers ready in just a few minutes. I will 100% return. Blue Magic is, as far as I'm concerned, my default choice anytime I'm in Cozumel.

I booked a 6 day package with accommodation in the free hostel. Very good customer service. They replied quickly when I booked it over email and were very flexible during my whole diving week. Other customers that had to cancel their dives the same day still got refunded. In the shop they were always friendly and helpful. I had my own gear and the staff packed and washed it everyday, very nice service. One thing I really missed was sitting down after the diving and hear fun fish facts from the dive guide, and the guide telling us what we saw and all that. They just said goodbye at the boat and that was it. Everywhere else in the world were Ive been diving we do the “after dive” with the logbooks and that is something I really love. I was told no dive school on the island normally do this and that the customers don’t want it. All people on the boat with me wanted to do it, and other I talked to as well. I have worked as a guide myself, and when I ask and make it seem really fun, I’ve never had anyone saying no to do logbooks and hear about the corals and marine life. This would be my great tip to Blue Magic: Have a “sit down” with your customers after diving. Make it fun! This will make the whole dive experience even better. On the boat there was nice vibes and easy going. The boats are good, nice and fast. You do a backroll in the water from the side. Something that surprised me is that they didn’t use the “buddy system”. They didn’t pair people up in buddy teams. I asked about this and was told that everybody buddy up with the guide. But that didn’t work, it was drift diving and at some point the guide was in the very front. We were 6 people and I was in the back. It would have been better if the guide would have made buddy teams, that is what all padi students learn as well. On a couple of trips the guide didn’t even remind everybody about the pre dive safety check. There was a couple of people who just done there certification and did not really now everything. Another thing that surprised me was that they take people diving beyond there certification. They took several Open Water Divers (that are only aloud to 18 meters) all the way down to 25 meters. The instructor said it was fine as long the customer were happy with it. The thing though, your insurance would never be valid if you dive outside your certification limit. My insurance company was very clear with that, I need to stay within the limits of my dive certificate. Most people are on holiday and are happy and might not think about this. I think the dive shop have the responsibility to dive within the limits. Why else do they teach the Open Water and the Advanced etc. If you dive, remember to always check what your insurance says, and make sure you dive within your limit. Ending up in a pressure chamber after diving costs a fortune and it can happen even if you follow every dive rule there is. And you want to have the insurance cover when that happens. All over this is a really nice dive shop with good vibe. I had a great week and saw lots of cool stuff under water. The guides showed me small nudiebranchs and also found sleeping sharks and hidden stingrays.

Hello Patrik. Thank you for your review. We like to hear that you had a good time with us and you enjoyed the amazing Cozumel’s underwater world. Thank you too, because your comments help us to improve. It is a good idea to hang out a bit after dives to talk about marine life and fill log books. It is difficult for us because of the logistics of the operation, you know the boats are in a different location of the dive center but if someone ask the guide for it and is willing to wait until the guide is ready to do it we should definitely do it. About assigning a dive buddy, the guides should have done that. We will talk to them to make sure that that issue is addressed, About the depth of the dives. The guide has the responsibility of providing a broad planning and from them, very diver has possibility to follow his own dive limit as long as de guide is informed. That is very doable in Cozumel due to the amazing visibility. Let’s remember that certified divers are certified to dive on their own with a buddy and they are capable of plan and follow their plan. You are right about the dive insurance, some insurances do not cover you if you have an accident beyond the limits of your certification. Most of them do, though, like the most popular one, DAN. Thank you again for your comments. Happy bubbles! The Blue Magic team.

I got open water certified a year ago with Mauricio and Blue Magic. I can’t recommend Mauricio or this dive shop enough! Mauricio was so very patient with me, adjusting where we did skills to my level of fear, always reassuring me and as proud as I was when I accomplished tasks. I returned this year and had a couple more days of beautiful dives. I am new to diving but Santos was understanding of my areas of weakness and willing to give me extra assistance underwater. He stayed close and checked in with me often. Abraham was the dive master day 2 and he gave me tips on kicking and was eager to go where those of us on the boat wanted to go. He asked what we wanted to see and based the locations on that. I was able to see the 2 things I most wanted to see, a turtle and multiple nurse sharks. All of the staff I have come into contact with have been helpful and kind and excited to hear about the dives when you return. I am frequently cold and day 1 wore 2 short wetsuits to help with this. The next day the staff packed me a long and a short and I appreciated the extra attention they gave this situation. I plan to have my soon-to-be 11 year-old son come get certified here.
