A smaller version of the pyramid of Kukulkan. Notable for beautiful stairway balustrades in the shape of serpents. This large pyramid is located between el Castillo and the caracol observatory. No accesses available but according to the guide there is a temple on top with access to a subterranean cavern where human remains were found, hence its name - the ossuary.

Just when finished with El Castillo and heading southward to the Observatory you'll be surprised seeing this smaller replica. It will be on your right hand side. It's official name is the Tomb of high priest.

The Ossuary is not far from the main plaza of Chichen-Itza but attracts far less crowds. There is a shady spot nearby which we stopped at to rest for a while.
The structure itself is reasonably large and you can spend 10 minutes or so walking around it and admiring it's various features.

Chichen Itza The Tomb of the High Priest is also known as the Ossuary or Osario, meaning burial place.
Reflecting the styles of El Castillo, the Tomb of the High Priest has a combined elements of both Toltec and Puuc influences. The pyramid stands ten meters (30 feet) high and has four staircases leading up to the top temple. Carved feathered serpents adorn the sides if the stairwells and the pillars also reflect the serpent-God. It has stucco reliefs of mythological characters.
In between the two pillars is an entry port 10 meters (36 feet) down via a cut stone shaft to a natural cave. When it was excavated, numerous bones and funeral offerings were found at the cave; shell, copper bells, jade.

El Osario (The Ossuary) is a mini replica of El Castillo (The Castle) and is located southwest of the impressive pyramid. Like El Castillo, it is a 4-sided pyramid with a staircase on each side. The serpent heads at the bottom of each staircase are fairly well-preserved.

It is best to visit all the monuments at the site in the guided tour and back track to favourites etc in free time. We spent quite a few hours on the site and had a fantastic time.

The Chichen Itza Ossuary is also known as the tomb of the great priest. This structure is composed of nine staggered bodies very similar to the Kukulkan pyramid, of which it appears to be a replica, of lesser height. It has a frieze of decorated reliefs similar to those found in the Temple of the Warriors. To be seen briefly during the tour of the ruins
