This is a continuation from TULUM RUINS BEWARE. Oops didn’t mention the scam artists will charge you $50 each for parking/entry to ruins and a guide. We got ripped off the first time we went there. Go directly to ruins entrance and pay I believe around $5 to park and less than $10 for ruins. Just be alert. Mexico is awesome but as far as scams there are scam artists everywhere

Tulum, a taste of Old Mexico is getting larger and more built up. Half the stores have posted prices, still, and the others try to get as much as possible. Stick to the posted prices and posted rates. Taxis are the same, trying to get more. We got lucky and found Ernesto in taxi #1147 and tel #52-984-176-3345 whom we hire for a full day (8 hours) at $200 plus gas, that's only $25/hr for a car and driver. What a deal for a personal driver to Ruins and Cenotes on our own schedule. He even speaks English, a plus! We love Tulum and will be making our fifth trip there (third to Kore Tulum Resort) this coming spring. Worth the trip!

Totally enjoyed the time we spent in Tulum! Was interesting to see real Maya ruins, and the views of the beaches with the most beautiful water in Cancun are just incredible! A must see!

90% of the reviews of Avenue Tulum are factually incorrect. This is a shopping street in downtown Cancun and not the Tulum Archeological site in Rivera Mia. This is why you should read reviews on here with a grain of salt. It appears most do not even know where they are. Funny in a sad sort of way.

Avenue Tullum can be reached by city bus. Many shops and other necessities of city life are located here. Walmart is provided for your shopping pleasure. Guides are not required but a handle on Spanish might come in handy. Best Kahlua prices can be found at Market 28.

From the ruins to beach, it is through a rickety stairs. The white sands are rained down by plastic bottle caps. Water temperature is a bit warm.

I stopped here on my way to belize and Guatemala because I'd been told the town had a 'festival' vibe, there was an ethos of environmental care and sustainability.
Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth.
The business owners here have zero concern with their impact on the local people or the environment.
They are all about the profit and happily rape and pillage the area for the love of the almighty dollar.
You can have a great time here if your main interest is the same as the majority of white entitled westerners... Getting off your face on weed, shrooms or acid.
Not being into that, I sipped a couple of beers and listened to a couple of bands.
A local guy was forcing his dog to dance on it's hind legs and then grabbed it by the scruff of the neck and shook it when it became too tired to suffer the torment. This was largely ignored by the revellers intent upon having a drug fuelled evening.
If getting wasted in the sun is your thing then Tulum will be a paradise for you.
If on the other hand you are looking for a more authentic Mexican experience.. Jog well past this fake hole with its designer shops and their overpriced sweatshop produced clothes... The shishi cafés with their terrible food and worse service.
The fake travellers and their pretentious Boho labels.

I am reviewing Avenue Tulum located in Centro (Downtown Cancun) not the ruin Tulum, a dedicated attraction. Having visited that site as well.
Aveneidea Tulum is the heart and soul of the local economy in Cancun. Yes, there are some larger department stores which are just fantastic and inexpensive. The fresh produce, baked goods and local markets on the side streets are as if you are coming in for a family meal. Take a cafe and pastries and let the world go by. It is very safe, please just use common sense, leave your valuables at the hotel safe, just as you would do in any city.

We live just off of Avenida Tulum in an apartment for the winter. There are good restaurants, shops, grocery stores, pharmacies and Parque de Las Palapas is a block from Avenida Tulum and this park offers a look at how Mexican families spend quality time together. The ADO bus station is located here and the buses are a great inexpensive way to travel around the Riviera Mayan. Taxis are plentiful and be sure to ask the price because the taxi drivers sometimes rip you off because you are a foreigner. Crossing the Avenue can be tricky. There are specific crossings and usually the transit police are there to stop traffic but most of the time they are talking to one another, so you have to stop the traffic yourself in order to cross. Avenida Tulum is very different from the hotel zone. It is much more tranquil and shows the daily of the people of Cancun.

Avenida Tulum is a 4 lane highway in Cancun old town which is depressingly poor and run down, we visited hoping for a better experience than the hotel zone - wrong. The disparity is shocking - no money being spent on it or here in the town, It's a shame. Nothing for tourists - just shabby bars and restaurants where people barely speak any English. Authentic, perhaps, worth visiting - no.

As a tourist staying in the Hotel Zone you should take the R-1 bus down to Tulum Avenue. This is a great area to wander around and have a look at all the different shops, stores, restaurants and bars. After seeing Tulum Avenue you can tell all the ignorant tourists that call the area around Coco Bongo "Downtown" that the world doesn't end at kilometer 9. Does any educated person really think that the center of a city with 3/4 of a million people would be a night club.
Go down Tulum Avenue and wander into Market 23. It is way less stressful than going to Market 28 where the merchants will harass you at every shop.
