Carlos captures the essence of the Mayan sites both in historical and current day perspectives in such a way that we changed or entire schedule and spent our remaining 3 days in Mexico with him. Then we took 5 family members down so they could have a similar experience. We talked him into recording some of the sites so we could continue the learning process on Zoom during the COVID 19 quarantine. Carlos provides a life changing experience and I recommend him to everyone regardless of background or circumstance.

We chose a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints specific tour guide and Carlos did not disappoint. His knowledge of the Book of Mormon, the Mayan Culture, and the parallels between them was astounding. We saw Tulum and Coba and learned so much. He took care of our needs as a group and made sure we got the best of everything, like food and transportation. He was able to customize a trip for a large group on very short notice. He arranged a tour that focused on our desires. He even took us to some non-archeological destinations, like an amazing cenote, snorkeling, and a very good restaurant. He also introduced us to some pretty awesome traditional music that we never would have heard otherwise, and now it's on all of our playlists. He's the best.

We emailed Carlos and scheduled a 2 day tour. Gabriel was our tour guide and we were so pleased with our experience. Gabriel is friendly and knowledgeable. We felt safe. Even though this company is labeled “LDS tours”, if you are not a member of this faith, this is still an excellent choice for a tour guide, as they could accommodate the information shared.
We had a Tuesday and Thursday schedule. On Tuesday we went to Tulum, Koba, and a beautiful cenote. Lunch was a delicious and authentic. We had vegetables, meat and tortillas at a restaurant near Koba. We had some time to find souvenirs at the restaurant or the ruins. You can find real hand made (not stuff from China) items at these local shops, and you can support the local economy too. We brought our own snorkel gear and really enjoyed using that in the cenote.
On Thursday we went to Chitzen Itza, Ek Balam and then ate at a neat town that is famous for smoked meats. We got to see the the meats being smoked and then ate a platter of smoked meat tacos. So delicious! We also found some neat souvenirs along the way. We found credit card or pesos work best at the shops.
As far as the information that Gabriel shared, we appreciated his presentation of facts and learning about the Mayan culture. We also had wonderful discussions about how this is one possibility for the Book of Mormon people and appreciated scriptures shared.
Bring some money for lunch tips. Lunch was included in our tour price. Also bring some money to tip the guide/driver...they really do a wonderful job.

We had such a great time visiting Coba, cenote (Tankach-Ha), lunch at a local restaurant by Coba and Tulum with Carlos, Ruben was our driver :) We have previously been to these places on our own but this time we took friends and had Carlos as our guide, they took on a whole new significance. The day was wonderful and well organized. Carlos was able to cater to our timeframe and needs. I would not hesitate to recommend LDS Tours. They are very accommodating and have many options depending on your timeframe, interests and areas that you want to explore. We are hoping to return and visit more wonderful places with LDS Tours. We felt safe and had no worries (even with COVID restrictions).

We had a great time on this tour learning about Mayan history and culture within a religious/Book of Mormon context. We were lucky to be able to visit Chichen Itza the first day that it reopened after being closed for months due to COVID. We also visited the peaceful Ek Balam and a beautiful cenote! Carlos is very knowledgeable and did a great job at teaching us Mayan history and pointing out the little gems he found that were related in the Book of Mormon. He was really open about his approach - he's there to present history and the connections that he's found, nothing he says is canon or absolute truth, so it's important to come with an open mind.

It would have been nice to know the itinerary - just to know where we're headed next any time we got in the van would have been helpful. Carlos also brought his brand new camera and there were some moments were he seemed more interested in taking pictures than in being a guide. Then he sold us the photos at the end (160+ photos of us and the ruins). This was a little irksome because 1) we never asked him to do that - we were equipped to take our own photos and 2) literally the day before we were on a tour w/ another guide who gave us all the photos/videos he took for free. Also if you tip, make sure to specify to split it between Carlos and the driver (if there is one).

Our friends in Coto de Caza, CA gave us Carlos’ name when they heard we were traveling to Playa del Carmen. They raved about him and the tour he led for them. So we asked Carlos to take us to Coba and Tulum. He is SO knowledgeable about Mayan history (as well as Olmec, Aztec, etc) and interesting in his presentation. He is easy to spend an entire day with. He took great care of us. He handled all the arrangements so we could just focus on the sights and the information he continuously shared with us. We loved the many photos he took of us along the way to memorialize the experience too. We especially loved his knowledge of the Book of Mormon and how the ruins we visited related to specific scriptural verses that he quoted to us. It was thrilling! We’re already talking about returning to the Yucatán Peninsula for a tour of all of his favorite Mayan archaeological sites. Our friends were 100% correct - LDS Tours by Mormon Encounter is #1.We HIGHLY recommend that you choose Carlos for your tour of archaeological sites in Mexico.

We had an AMAZING experience with Carlos! What an awesome tour guide and human being he is. We LOVED every minute of our excursion. We got to learn about the ancient Mayans in Coba and see many of the ruins. Carlos was extremely knowledgeable and shared many facts and details that made this part of the trip a lot of fun. We got to swim in a beautiful Senote which our kids absolutely loved. We got to see a real Mayan village and then we got to see monkeys in the jungle and do a zipline. It was worth every penny and we would recommend it to anyone who is in Cancun. Carlos is the BEST!

Carlos Almen Ortiz has taken us on 5 different tours around the Mayan Peninsula. We keep going back to him because he takes care of us and makes each tour something to remember. He has a passion for archeology and the areas connection to the book of mormon. The trips have always reinforced our undertsanding of what the gospel of Jesus Chrust is, has been and will continue to be through generations.

We debated coming to Cancun post COVID, especially when some of the sites aren’t open, but our experience with Carlos was absolutely fantastic. We toured Tulum and Cobá with the company in February 2020 and loved the insights and discussions from the Book of Mormon we gained. We wanted to return with our Children. We spent two days with Carlos, we went to a the Mercado, a Private Cenote to snorkel, were blessed by a Mayan Priest, visited forgotten ruins, zip lined, canoed and saw Spider Monkeys. It was an amazing experience. He assured me he would give us an amazing experience even though some sites weren’t open and he delivered! My girls said it was an experience they wouldn’t forget and helped grow their testimonies. I’m so grateful we decided to come. Everything was safe and socially distanced! Can’t recommend enough. We’ll use Carlos on all our Cancún trips and have recommended him to our friends and family!

Never having visited the area, we hired Carlos to take us around a couple of sites. His knowledge and expertise of both archeology and LDS perspective were amazing, and kept us learning and deeply engaged for the entire day. He's perfectly bilingual, sensitive to the needs of the group, and clearly passionate about what he's doing. He also took us to an obscure little shop/cafe for a lunch of various smoked meats, which was to die for. We highly recommend him, LDS or not, but if you're interested in that perspective, he's definitely your guy. No question. Will absolutely use him again. That's him in the first picture.
