Do not choose Helaman tours for your excursion. I’ve been on enough excursions to know. Trust me. But if you want to know why… Where do I begin. This tour was rough. I thought paying for a private tour we would receive more and not less. I specifically told the tour company I wanted to do chichen itza and then go to Vallolidad to have lunch at a restaurant. This was not communicated to our tour guide and when we mentioned it he still insisted on taking us to separate lunch place. And doing the normal tour every other company does. Also once we were on our way to Chichen Itza the tour guide informed us that the ruins were post Book of Mormon era, so nothing in the Book of Mormon happened at Chichen Itza. So do you need an LDS tour? Absolutely not. The driver/tour guide was a terrible driver. He was texting and talking on his phone the entire time. Swerving all over the road. Speeding up, slowing down, slamming on the brakes twice so hard My seatbelt locked and everything on my lap flew off and onto the van floor. I was honestly scared for my family’s safety. Every time he’d pay a toll booth he’d fiddle trying to get his money back in the wallet and be swerving all over. He answered every phone call he got and was on his phone while driving almost the entire time. With 6 hours in the car with him and the van bouncing the entire way back, by the time we got back to our hotel I was so car sick I spent the rest of the night in the hotel throwing up. Halfway to chichen itza the van started to have problems, he turned on the hazard lights and slowed down the rest of the long drive. Our tour was rearranged and we would go to Vallolidad first and find a mechanic. We drove around to find a mechanic and waited in the slums of the city— then we’re told we were just going to go to the square. So we drive to the square. We got to Vallolidad at 10am, before the cute ice cream shops were even open. The entire time there I felt like the tour guide was just stalling and we were all just waiting for the other van to arrive. The city is cute—but it’s cuter at 5pm when they know tourists are coming. Next stop was lunch. Which meant we weren’t going to get to Chichen itza until 1pm. In the heat of the day. Lunch was in a really cute place. Not a tourist trap—so I was pleasantly surprised by it. Probably the highlight of our day. But after I threw it all up when we got back, I’m not sure how to feel about lunch. Last stop was Chichen itza. In the heat of the day. My little kids were hot and tired and bored. The tour at Chichen itza was boring. I’ve done 4 tours at Chichen itza. I was there two weeks ago with friends on a non lds tour. And I thought with kids the lds part might add a little something extra. Nope. The tour from a big company two weeks ago was MUCH better than this one. We actually didn’t even finish the tour this time. We were ready to go home. And like I mentioned on the way home he texted and called on his phone the entire way back! Heck he even took a phone call mid-tour at Chichen itza. The van bounced the entire 3hrs back. And by the time we pulled up to our Hotel (after running into two speed bumps at full speed—because he didn’t see them) my head was throbbing and I was so sick. From 5pm to midnight I was in bed with a headache and threw up 13 times. Food or car ride or combination, I’ll never know. The guy should NOT be a tour driver. I would never put my family in that situation again. Nor would I recommend this tour to anyone.

Our tour guide Ezekiel was fantastic. He had knowledge and passion for the archaeology and the history of this area. He Had great religious insights on Tulum as well. Ezekual then took us to the grand cenote which exceeded expectations. We took snorkel gear which enhanced the experience even more. So much fun as a family. He then wrapped up the tour by taking us to an authentic Mexican restaurant where the locals eat and it was also a highlight of the day. Thank you to Helaman tours and to Ezekiel for a fantastic experience. Highly recommend using this agency for your future travel needs. Jamie and Jacob

Our group of 6 had a great tour today with Nephi. He was on time, the van was spotless and the bottled water was cold. He paid attention to all the details of a great excursion. He taught us many things about the ruins that we didn’t know, even though we had been to both before. He added humor to keep things interesting. The lunch was served in a pleasant restaurant. It was a full meal, including flan for dessert. The reservation process was simple and efficient with Gema. We would definitely book with them again!
