This isn't Hernan Cortes' house but it was still pretty cool to see how the trees have grown and "swallowed" much of this property. I liked it because it's old and organic, and even though Hernan never lived there (a woman trying to make money posted a sign saying it was his house so she could collect the entrance fees), it is believed he visited this house hundreds of years ago. This isn't a "must do" in Veracruz, but you'll enjoy it.

La Antiqua is a small but beautiful town. There needs to be an investment by Mexican govt. to revitalize this area. Casa de Hernan Cortes is overgrown by trees. The Hummingbird river has boat tours and a nice bridge but a lot of stores and hotels have left and the area is struggling. This was the Old Veracruz and the government has abandoned it.

If you dont get a guide you wont be amazed by the magic of the place. Of course, this is going to be boring if nobody explains to you what happened there. There are a lot of kids who knows the history by hard they are excellent in what they do.

I was absolutely fascinated by the ruins of this historic house literally held up by the roots of the trees that grew over the house and collapsed the roof. We did have a private guide that explained all the history to us. There is not much in the way of explanation if you don't have a guide.

Make sure you visit this place with a good tour guide not just get someone to drive you there. This place and it's surrounds is full of so much history.

I enjoy Mexican history, so to see a structure that was built during the conquest in the old Vera Cruz was fascinating.

A short distance from the city of Veracruz. It is a small town with some seafood restaurants. The house itself is only a shell, but its still easy to visualize what it looked like.

If you are in Veracruz you will probably also visit Antigua, the old Vera Cruz. There you can have a look at a building (in ruins) that is said to have been Cortés' house although some people say that he only used it as a storehouse for his goods. But with some imagination you can still see Cortés walking around here and then visiting the small chapel towards the river which was the first Spanish chapel on firm American land.
