This place is called ZĂłcalo de Veracruz; and is a very nice outdoor square in the city center; with lots of restaurants, live bands and klots of locals, families using this oplace, dancing and enjoying. There are souvenir and food carts here too. Very lively most of the time, especially at night. A must visit at night

As major plazas go this one in the center of Veracruz is not the most attractive. It is surrounded by the usual things, old government building with a tourist office, large cathedral, and hotels and sidewalk restaurants. There are many zocalos in Mexican cities that are nicer looking. However, it is a must in Veracruz to be there in the evening. Every night we were in the city last month there was free entertainment including bands, a singer, a clown, and kids who danced. There was always a nice appreciative crowd too. This is a city that likes to party and enjoys entertainment.

I love plazas. Especially the main ones in a big old city. And this one has it all. Most nights there are festivities with music and dancing. Lots of restaurants surround on a couple of sides and music is always playing in the streets at normal hours. Very pretty. The Palacio and Cathedral are on the plaza. A short walk to the Malecon.

Visited the "Zocalo" every day during our two week stay in Veracruz. It's always lively and there seems to be a special event every evening. The plaza is surrounded by a church, hotels, restaurants, stores, and a municipal palace. If you enjoy people watching, this is a great spot. There are shoe-shiners, vendors, street-people, policemen, old people, young people, couples, lovers, children, office workers, students, tourists and more to see.

Nice and cultural place to go and chillin'. Very near to La Plaza de TecnologĂas with electronic products with low prices. Some pubs and restaurants around.

I have mixed thoughts about this place because I've been there 3 times, and the first 2 were pretty good; but this last time was very uncomfortable. The streets where dirty and smelled like pee, it was also full of locals that made it very hard to walk around.
My guess is that on Sundays the streets are dirty because of the amount of people there over the weekend, plus usually on Sundays people don't work and they all tend to go downtown.

The Plaza de Las Armas (the zocalo) was the focal center of our two day visit to Veracruz. Each evening there was music, dancing, and lots of people just enjoying this inviting and engaging town square. One night (Sat. March 7), there was live band and danzon contest, and on the second night (Sun. March 8) there was a dance performance featuring teenagers performing a traditional veracruzano wedding ceremony. We also saw a few mariachi bands, and lots of people just relaxing and hanging out under the spotlighted palm trees.

A bit dirty and dusty for being (a) the Zocalo and (b) the Zocalo of Veracruz. Ate in one of the bars on the Zocalo. Got out of there as quick as we could after mediocre food, awfuly margaritas (these were awful for any country in the world, let alone Mexico) and very very bad service. Forgot this place quickly. There was a live band playing in the square with lots of local people dancing some very impressive salsa which was great fun to watch.

Plaza de Las Armas, or otherwise known as the Zocolo, is a green retreat from the traffic choked streets of downtown Veracruz. Grab a bite at one of the many eateries ringing the perimeter. Or just grab a seat at one of the public benhes. There is plenty of shade and things to watch. Or get your shoes cleaned from one of the shine guys!

The plaza is quite nice with some impressive buildings and sidewalk cafes. But it is at night when you want to be here for the best reason possible--DanzĂłn! The crowd gathers, the musicians play lively Cuban-inspired music, and the dancers have fun. Those of us watching have just as much fun! If you've never seen the film DanzĂłn from the early 2000's, you should try to find it on DVD or via streaming. It's a wonderful film that celebrates this city and it's dancing tradition. Of course, while at the square in the evening, also watch the families playing with toys they have bought their children, the people eating at the hotels' sidewalk cafes, etc. It's a magical place that makes people happy like the Riverwalk in San Antonio and other outdoor places that are full of activities and fun.
