A wonderful collection of textiles. If you love textiles, be sure to give yourself time to really take a look and enjoy. The museum shop is not always open when it says so I missed the opportunity to make several purchases before I had to leave. I would definitely go back to visit!!

As an ex weaver (many years ago I studied textiles at college) I was fascinated to discover this place on our 2 night stopover in St Cristobal, during our tour of Mexico. The place has a calm, tranquil air & the main exhibits are interesting, although a shame the information is only in Spanish. Upstairs is the main textile museum, with interesting videos in loop showing traditional methods of weaving & dyeing yarn. The exhibits are displayed well in glass cabinets, some on mannequins & there are many drawers to slide out to examine other exquisite pieces of fabric. We sat for a while in the lovely cloister courtyard & it made a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle of the town. Do go & visit this gem if you're in the area.

I'm not much into fashion or weaving but I have to say I really enjoyed this museum! Set in a refurbished convent (I think) the clothing and textiles are lovingly displayed in such a way that one not only learns a lot about the special clothing of the region but also gains respect and admiration for the craftsmanship involved. An added bonus is the adjacent SCDLC history museum which offers some truly interesting artifacts particularly from the Colonial period...oh, and the old church next door (which wasn't open when I visited) has a gorgeous facade. Btw, these museums are a particularly good choice on a rainy wet season afternoon and can be combined with the handicraft market next door.
