I studied at Instituto Jovel twice before and learned so much that I MOVED to San Cristobal de Las Casas to study there every day. Six years in Mexico and five Spanish–language schools later, it is Instituto Jovel where I have some real hope of becoming fluent. All the reviews you are reading here are true. The Director of the Spanish Language School hires and supervises excellent teachers. He models kindness and patience, and everyone - the receptionist, the teachers, the accountant, and the genial gardener are friendly and welcoming. The classes are small or private and are held in airy classrooms open to an amazing and lush garden. Students come from around the world with all levels of Spanish, and all seem to agree that this school is amazing. Say hello when you come – I’ll still be here!

I had the pleasure of attending Instituto Jovel 4 hours a day for two weeks. Three hours of grammar and one hour of conversation. All classes were one on one. This was the best present I have ever given myself. My instructors - Maricarmen, Luis and Anais were all degreed in language and adapted their training to exactly match my needs. I thank them for their patience and understanding as well as their charming personalities. The school itself has around 12 small classrooms surrounding a park-like garden setting. I can't imagine a more tranquil place to study and build friendships. GIve yourself a present. Sign up for courses at Instituto Jovel and expand your appreciation for the language and people of Mexico. You won't regret it.

I came unexpectedly and only for a week and so I couldn't contact them until the Sunday night before classes started on Monday. They got back to me first thing in the morning, and, based on my letter in Spoanish knew exaclty the right class for me skills wise.I signed up for four hours daily and it was a class of 3. interestingly, each day the class was taught by three different teachers, changing after each hour and a half. That worked well and was gnerally cordinated. but ti was a good break to have different styles and skillsets. All three were very skilled, more attuned to grammar than I fully cared about- though that was good- and extremely suportive--interested, and intersting.. The school is pretty with nice outdoor space and the admisntrative staff were extremely friendly and helfpul. Very fair prices. A highlight was that they matched me with a resident who wanted to build Englishg skills and we spent time talking in both languages and he wa very hospitable as well. All in all very good and I expect I will be back.

I’ve taken classes at Instituto Jovel twice now, and there is a reason that I will never decline to return. To start, the physical environment is lovely with lots of natural light and a garden. When you first register, the Director Reginaldo is quick to respond and answer any questions or concerns you have. All of the teachers are professional and nurturing. As someone who grew up with Spanish in the home, but has choppy grammar because my primary language is English, I found it much easier to learn and correct my bad habits than when taking a general grammar class. The courses are colloquial and casual, with everything learned in context. They have plenty of background with students who identify as heritage speakers, such as myself. I’ve had two different home-stays within walking distance to the school and really appreciate the connections that I’ve made with my host families. It’s great for practicing Spanish, but also it helps to feel more settled in to your surroundings. I highly recommend the experience. Both your hosts and the school will give you wonderful advice on getting around SanCris and excursions outside of the city. Some words of advice: 1) Definitely take the cooking class, and if you can, with the Municipal market tour. Since classes end at noon and 1:00pm and the market tour is at 10:00am plan it for a free weekday before you start or after you finish your classes. Otherwise, you can take just the class. 2) You will need to pay for everything provided by the school in cash; but not to worry, they are happy to take it in installments. 3) If you are concerned about how to get there from the Tuxtla-Gutierrez airport (it’s the closest, but just over and hour away), or arriving late at night, not to worry. The school has a driver that will pick you up and take you to your home-stay, posada, or hotel. All in all, I’m incredibly grateful for the experiences I’ve had. I look forward to another opportunity to return in the future.

My husband Tim and I just finished studying for a month at Insituto Jovel and we had a wonderful time there. We each took four hours of private classes and we each had three different teachers per day. We liked every one of them. We liked how they structure their program with grammar in the first hour and a half and conversation in the remaining hours. The teachers are wonderful and well-trained and they talked to each other about the things we needed to work on for consistency and continuity. We highly recommend Insitituo Jovel. With professional, intelligent teachers, a beautiful facility in the heart of the city, and friendly and helpful staff, it makes for a high quality Spanish learning experience.
