A terrific way to spend our second day in Oaxaca! Our guide, Rene, gave us a real wealth of information about mezcal country as we made our way to the first distillery. We all enjoyed especially learning about the process of how the mezcal is made but we also of course enjoyed the tastings themselves! There was a lunch stop in a small little town that the whole group could not stop talking about, Azul Adobe. I hope you all get to experience this restaurant on your tour, the food was mouthwatering and so cheap!

Rene was so knowledgeable and articulate that we hired him again for another tour two days later for Monte Alban! All in all both were great activities whether solo, couples or groups; solidly recommend it, and would gladly do it again with others the next time I return to Oaxaca!

Rene and his Mezcal Tour are amazing. We were 8 adults looking for knowledge, a day of adventure, history, and of course, great mezcal. From his impeccable and comfy van he took us to an agave field/farm, several distilleries, a great local lunch and a bonus stop to taste pulque (like agave kombucha - crazy good and different). He knows the owners so they are super friendly to “his” guests, imparts his stellar knowledge at the tastings, and keeps everything running smoothly and on time. He is friendly, patient and clearly loves what he does. Highly recommended, Rene gave us a fantastic and unforgettable day. Buy lots of bottles, as they are artisanal productions and you won’t find them elsewhere. Rene and his tour, like the liquids, are really something special.

Rene was absolutely incredible from start to finish. He helped me coordinate a large group of people for two of his tours (Monte Alban and Mezcal) and could not have been more informative or helpful. He put up with a ton of questions from me during the planning process and was professional all the way through. The tours were amazing - everyone in the group loved them! Super on time, well organized, all necessary information is provided to you well before the tour starts so that you can make the most out of it. Truly Rene made this a completely seamless and stress-free process. His friend who drives, Javier, is so kind and a very safe driver as well. I cannot recommend this tour company enough for anyone traveling in Oaxaca!

We went on two tours with Rene— the Magical Handicrafts Route, full day, and Monte Alban, half day— both excellent! Rene was knowledgeable about the culture of the area and the history. On the handicrafts tour, he selected excellent workshops to visit where we learned about the origins and the making of the various crafts— black pottery, carved and painted Cobal animals, and backstrap weaving. Unlike crafts tours we have taken in other countries, we did not feel pressured to buy. We enjoyed a walk through a regional market, and lunch at a country restaurant. We were only four people on the tour and enjoyed getting to meet the other two who were of Mexican heritage.

On the Monte Alban tour, we were a larger group, although still small by “tour” standards. Rene was knowledgeable, first in the museum and then on the site, explaining well and occasionally admitting that he did not know an answer. He kept us on a good pace, conscious of those who could not climb a particular monument. We traveled in a small van (two vans for Monte Alban), very comfortable. I highly recommend these two tours with Rene, and feel sure he is equally good on the other itineraries offered.

First off, let me say that my man and I work in the restaurant industry in SF and are all about our liquor, with him having a particular passion for mezcal, and this is exactly the tour for people like us. Unlike other tours in which there is a quick stop at one major mezcal “factory” (think Kendall Jackson), Rene takes you on a comprehensive mezcal lovers’ tour. First we visited the fields, then 3 different small distillers AND a pulque shop. It was just the two of us with him and the wonderful driver so it was a really in depth experience and we were able to pepper him with questions constantly. Rene is a quiet unassuming character who has a real passion for mezcal and what he does so it’s a pleasure to be around him, and his best friend drives and offers great commentary and conversation as well. Also, although at the outset it might seem pricey, if you tried as many mezcals as my bf did, it will be well worth your while. If you don’t really drink or are not really into the whole mezcal culture, this might not be the tour for you. Otherwise it’s fabulous! We also had the opportunity to try many rare mezcals from varietals other than espadin, which is almost impossible to do at home in the States. We sampled and bought some amazing treasures, had a delicious roadside lunch, and basically had a memorable day hanging out and talking to a lot of really cool dudes. My bf is from Bulgaria and they make rakija in a similar fashion in the villages there, so he especially connected with the old maestros in a way that probably wouldn’t have been possible had we done some standard tour. I tapped out on drinking after the first hour but the Oaxacan countryside and mezcal culture is so fascinating I was never bored. Similar to going for a whole day through the Napa Valley tasting and learning. Highly recommend for foodies who want to experience the soul (and booze) of Oaxaca!

Renee and his team are fantastic tour guides who prioritize safety while providing fun and unique educational experiences.

The full day mezcal tour is an excellent value for any genuine mezcal enthusiasts or those simply looking to learn more about the Agave spirit. You skip the commercial distilleries and visit some of the best family owned and operated mezcal producers in the region.

The tastings are very generous so eat a substantial breakfast. The stop for lunch was delicious and very affordable.

5/5 would recommend and I'll take this tour again when I return to Oaxaca.

My parents and I just spent a wonderful week in Oaxaca in the hands of René and Javier. Hoping to keep our "bubble" small, I had reached out to René several months prior to inquire about arranging private tours. He was quick to respond and a pleasure to work with, and put together a series of five private tours that covered all of our interests. Every day was different, bringing new experiences, sites, and tastes. We toured archeological sites, artist workshops, mezcal distilleries, and even hiked to over 10K feet in the mountains north of the city. René is very knowledgeable and well-organized, and he understood my concerns about COVID, so everything we did felt very safe. Javier is also a superb driver and great company. Based on my excellent experience, I highly recommend working with René and Javier for planning a private trip, and I'm sure the group tours offered are fabulous, as well. I hope to return to Oaxaca and will definitely work with René again when I do so.

Excellent tour led by Rene. Informative and with copius amounts of mezcal to try. The place they take you for lunch is traditional and delicious.

Pricing system is slightly warped in that if you book in a larger group you can pay considerably less for the same tour (and vice versa).

My group spent several days with René. He was an exceptional tour guide. At archeological ruins such as Mitla and Monte Albán we learned so much about Mesoamerica and Zapotec history and culture. Another day, we met the famous weaver Jacobo Mendoza Ruiz and his family, toured the atelier and saw the process of dying wool. We greatly admired the beautiful rugs made by father and son and even purchased some of them, although there was zero pressure to do so. The mezcal tour was informative and so much fun (also purchases there) as was the walking tour of the city center and a hike in the beautiful mountains. René made sure that each day was full of interesting and exciting sites and activities and although we saw and did so much, it was seamless and smooth for us tourists. He took us to excellent restaurants for lunches and it was such a pleasure to spend several days with him. He took our stated general areas of interest and put together several very memorable days. I highly recommend René. He is fantastic.

We loved our day with Rene. He tailored it specifically to what we had told him we were interested in and you could tell that he really knew who were the best artisans at their skills. We learnt a lot and had a really great day. I highly recommned Rene and his tours.
