We go to Oaxaca at least once per year and we always stop at La Soledad. Their chocolate is awesome. You can buy it pre made, or even better have them grind it for you in their huge molinos. Lots of choices as far as flavors. Remember, Mexican chocolate is a bit grittier than what you are used to...that's because... More

I like the chocolate from here. It has a bit of gritty texture that not everyone cares for but the flavors are excellent. Look carefully (usually behind the counter or in the case) for the variety packs with small individual pieces of chocolate in different flavors. They also have mole and other items for sale. To be honest, I didn't like this place so much. yes, the choco smells great and because of that, I bought lots of chocolate from here; however, when I got home, all the choco was kind of powdery, and it kind of smelled weird, so, I unfortunately threw out most of it...

One a street where there are several chocolate merchants. Remember that chocolate is native to this part of the world so they have had thousands of years to perfect their blends. We bought several pounds to take home. It's not cheap, but it's not expensive and soooo worth it. They also sell pre-mixed mole, some varieties contain chocolate, of course.... More

This place is very special. You can smell the chocolate a block away. When you get there you see the specialty chocolate grinding with spices - each family can have their special blend made up. There are tastings. The chocolate is coarse but potent. I brought some home for mole.

I lived in Oaxaca City during 4 years (1991-1995) The first day I was there I visited La Soledad and The Mayordomo chocolate factories. La soledad outstanded for its personalized service by owner Mrs Pombo, who is also a hotel owner. They grind the ingredients being you there watching what grains and what proportions are put in the mill, while... More
