Florencio Moreno is an excellent tour guide - informative, attentive and responsive. We spent five days taking different tours with him out of Oaxaca de Juarez. We got to visit people in their homes and at their profession - it was a very personal, informative, fun-filled trip. Highly recommend him and his company.

Florencio is a fantastic. He organised a day tour for our family of five adults covering Monte Alban and a couple of other lesser known sites, a weavers home, a craft market and a mezcal producer. Every interest covered! His van was comfortable and well appointed (cold drinks) but more importantly his knowledge of the subjects and the localities was excellent. He was able to give us a background to everything we saw that made for an interesting day. Thoroughly recommended.

Fantastic week in Oaxaca guided by local expert and academic Florencio Moreno. Florencio was always on time, attentive and very knowledgeable. He as adept at Mexican history and culture of course but also very comfortable guiding through the local cuisine. We fed of his dining suggestions (literally) and, but for three days in the Sierra Norte at the end of our week, I would have returned home many satisfied kilos larger. A great trip and Florencio was the cornerstone of it.

I have been to Oaxaca 15 times and I will never tire of it. Each time I go I spend at least one full day with Florencio Moreno of "Academic Tours Oaxaca "http://www.academictoursoaxaca.com/index.php
This trip I saw that Florencio was offering a couple of new excursions so we decided to try his "Boutique Mezcal" tour of small batch, artisan mezcal being produced in small villages by families who have been developing their personal techniques & recipes for centuries. Sure tasting is fun, but meeting the people who produce mezcal & learning the history of it creates a lasting memory and appreciation for the craft of producing this popular drink.
We also took advantage of Florencio's "Street Food of Oaxaca City". We had a great time sampling the simple & delicious eats offered in various locations of downtown Oaxaca. Florencio taught us how to select the best places for taste, quality & cleanliness. We have many new favorite spots to visit next time we need a quick & cheap bite to eat.
I highly recommend these & any of the other tours offered by Academic Tours Oaxaca. Transportation is provided in clean, comfortable, modern cars with air conditioning. Guides are extremely knowledgeable, fun, friendly, and speak fluent English. Florencio can quickly evaluate what you are enjoying about a certain experience & taylor the excursion just for you.

Our guide was amazing. He is worth much more than his daily fee. He picked us up on Sunday in a very comfortable vehicle. Our adventure was so amazing and his extensive knowledge was so good we added a day. My wife and I and a friend can truly say we have experienced parts of Oaxaca that some will never absorb from a book. When we return we will plan our visit based on Florencio's availability.

We spent a delightful and fascinating day delving into the history and culture of Tlacolula valley outside the city of Oaxaca. Florencio was able to guide us along the threads of the diverse anthropological, historical and archeological tapestry of this amazing valley. Highlights spanned 12,000 years of human habitation in the valley starting with petroglyphs, the domestication of corn, Zapotec and Mixtec history, flowing into the post-Columbian era and its ties to Colonial and modern religious, artistic and culture practices. It was an unforgettable day. We learned so much and highly recommend Academic Tours Oaxaca.

My family spent a day and a half with Florencio of Academic Tours Oaxaca, and it was a special experience. The first half day was spent touring the Zapotec ruins of Monte Alban. Florencio's breadth of knowledge about the ancient sites, in terms of its archeological and cultural significance, as well as the influence of early Zapotecs on successor civilizations was most impressive. His command of the details of the site made for an outstanding day. Our full day with Florencio took us to the outskirts of Oaxaca City, where he introduced us to one of the region's master weavers to understand how Oaxaca's beautiful textiles are made. He took us to a tiny mezcal distillery where a 7th generation mezcalero was making the most outstanding mezcal we had ever had. After an excellent and authentic lunch in a roadside restaurant, we visited a literal "mom and pop" pottery maker where a husband and wife were making great examples of the beautiful black pottery for which Oaxaca is known. Florencio was an excellent communicator, intelligent and knowledgeable, polite and punctual - everything we could have hoped for to introduce us to the wonders of Oaxaca.

The guide was interesting. Not Florencio who is so highly praised in the reviews. The tastings were limited to two markets and a few foods. For a town which is heralded internationally for food this tour was a sad disappointment. We had no real interaction with the vendors and the depth of food knowledge was marginal. The guide was an art historian and knowledgeable about Oaxacas history; so this was more of a management mismatch.
This tour was also one of the most difficult to set up.
My take is that this company may be over it’s head and too big for its britches. Overpriced and underdelivered. No recommendation from us!

Florencio isn't just a tour guide, he's a true local and academic.
We had a fantastic day with him, learning about local Oaxacan culture, history, and archaeology. Though the tour options are endless, we chose to do one of the more traditional "hit the highlights" rounds.
I wasn't anticipating enjoying our trip to a traditional Zapotec market as much as I did. If interested in true Oaxacan culture, I would highly recommend going with him to one. It's the sort of thing we would never have seen or learned about if we weren't with him. No one at this market was catering to tourists. All of the food was delicious and locally grown or made. And we got to see and hear people speaking in their native language instead of Spanish. A truly remarkable experience.
Mitla was of course what we expected, however having Florencio's explanations and knowledge enriched the experience immensely. Every question I asked had a detailed, interesting answer, and Florencio often elaborated to include information about the most recent archaeology studies/papers.
For any tour in Oaxaca, we would absolutely recommend and return to Florencio.

Hi, prices vary hugely depending on who your guide is. I work for a UK based tour operator and over the years have sub contracted many guides- by far Florencio at Academic Tours is worth every penny and would recommend paying whatever he charges.
