We spent a fantastic day with Yves, 3 other hikers and 2 local guides hiking from Amatlan to Cupulalpan. The day was as described on the website and then some. All details were perfectly orchestrated: e.g., pickup at our Oaxaca hotel, cookie break in ruins from an old church, short journey into abandoned gold mine (supported by Yves's great knowledge of the locale and history), and awesome lunch in Capulalpan at the end of the hike. The drive to and from the hike was beautiful, particularly the sunset on the way home. We especially appreciated the local guides. Indeed, they had intimate knowledge of the trail having hiked it for hours every day to get to school when they were children. Tierraaventura's philosophy on ecotourism drew us to this tour as opposed to others that serve the area. We were not disappointed. Far from it. I recommend this outfitter heartily and can't wait to return for more adventures. As an aside, I left my wallet on the van back to Oaxaca. Claudia and the driver, Omar, were incredibly responsive and I got my wallet back within an hour or so. Thank you!

The tour guides on this trip are basically living the life you've dreamed of. Both, former professionals, gave up the rat-race to go to Mexico and live the life they want. One, a former sociologist, is now an expert in traditional medicines and healing. The other, a former architect, is building his sustainable dream home using traditional building methods.

Between them both, there is a lot to talk about, they are extremely interesting and sociable hosts. They know all of the spots that you can't (easily) find online, and know the locals, so when you stop by the local coffee purveyor, you don't just learn about how coffee is made, but you also hear about their family and how that late' you grab every day affects people's lives thousands of miles away. They also recognize the casual absurdities that make up day-to-day life in certain parts of Mexico, and hearing their stories is a great laugh.

I couldn't ask for a better tour, and couldn't recommend better hosts. We had a great time.

Yves and Claudia picked us up promptly from our hotel in Oaxaca (8:40am) and off we drove to the foothills of Lachatao. Yves and a local guide led the hike up the mountain. Although the terrain and surrounding vegetations were dry, it was perfect weather. Do bring snacks in case you need to replenish your energy. And be warned, there are no toilets along the way. Yves provided healthy cookies when we took a break, while he, my husband, and son-in law soaked their tired feet in the refreshing spring water fr a small creek. The whole hike took about 3.5 hrs. Claudia was waiting for us at a clearing. A short drive later, we checked in at our lovely cabins with real woodfiring fireplace. My husband and I opted to have a massage (mexican style) with bonus traditional roots and herbal applications. Closeby is a beautiful local Village Center where the church, museum, and only restaurant in town are located. We had all our meals, traditional local dishes there. The view and the air on this mountain top village is serenely pure. This makes a perfect meditation/retreat venue. The next morning we had a tour of the local museum and adjoining temazcal, followed by a traditional healing hike up the "Hills of the Jaguar" led by Oscar, the local shaman. Wished he knew english. Ceremenial blowing of shells by the village children (he calls his assistants) and hugging of tree along the way made a nice touch. We were privileged to experience one of their healing ritual and getting one with nature( "earthing"), in a very authentic and indigenous way. Yves and Claudia are very passionate and has integrated themselves with the locals. They are the perfect hosts. Would highly recommend this activity.

Had an amazing time with Yves and Claudia!! We were supposed to visit a couple of villages but due to COVID-19 they were locked down. Claudia and Yves arranged an alternative which included amazing hikes with awesome views and staying at an adorable little cabin with a fireplace. They really made us feel comfortable and explained the culture of the natives that we would’ve missed had we just stayed in the city of Oaxaca. I highly recommend booking a trip with them and can’t wait to book another trip with them when this pandemic is over.

My hesitation in writing a review stems only from my desire to keep secret the amazingly beautiful location Yves and his pup Queta transported us to on our trip, which proved to be the highlight of our time in Oaxaca.

He and his wife Claudia are longterm residents of Oaxaca and have developed deep, meaningful relationships and an unsurpassed knowledge of the remote communities with which they partner to provide tourists with special and memorable experiences that would be difficult to achieve otherwise.

From the moment we were picked up to the time we were dropped off the following evening, my friend and I had a blast. Yves took care of all the details with patience and professionalism, allowing us to just enjoy and be in the present moment.

Oaxaca’s residents also take COVID-19 seriously, and we felt safe in that regard throughout our journey with Tierraventura. Our group was kept small (just my friend and I), we wore masks when necessary and most of our meals and adventures were had outside. Highly recommend this company to anyone traveling to the region.

My travel company partnered with Tierraventura in February 2020 for a spiritually focused 8-day retreat to Oaxaca. A year and a half later, this life-changing experience is something that continues to nourish each woman that was a part of this special experience, which also happened to be all of our last trips taken before coming home to a global pandemic. We spent 4 days in La Sierra Norte with Claudia, Lorena, and the communities of Cuajimoloyas and Lachatao that welcomed us into their communities, homes, and traditional culture and sacred ways of knowing. This profound experience is remains something that I have a hard time putting into words. Oaxaca is such a magical land, with so much beauty and wisdom to offer the seeking soul. Claudia and Yves are deeply connected to the lands and people of Oaxaca. It becomes very clear as soon as you meet them that they have been welcomed into these communities like family, and it's the same kind of welcome that then becomes extended to anyone who visits with them. Gracias gracias gracias, for bringing us into your world, and welcoming us into your community in Oaxaca like family. More than highly recommend experiencing the magical and sacred lands of Oaxaca with Tierraventura.

Yves pointed towards a fury spot on a big rock that otherwise would have passed unnoticed. Underneath hanging cactus mingled more than a thousand spiders in what it seemed an exquisit orgy—now disturbed by the passerby voyeurs. It’s this quality to point out the details and fill them with rich and unattended knowledge that made my three days tour with Claudia and Yves throughout the mointains of Sierra Norte in the beautiful state of Oaxaca very special (and that motivated me to leave a positive review here so maybe you too have the opportunity to share a similar experience).
A white VW van picked me up at 8:40am at my stay in Oaxaca city. We had a one hour drive to Cuajimoloyas during which Claudia introduced our group—I shared my tour with a couple from Switzerland and a couple from Canada, all tours comprise a maximum of six person—to important characteristics of the countryside, its people, and their history. I particularly enjoyed the profound introduction to regional medical and healing practices. Yves took us to a six hours hike across the forest and hills, while Claudia stored our luggage in the prepared cabins (equipped with extra blankets against the cold) and organized a late lunch in a local restaurant, an all you can eat buffet of local specialties included in the prize. After a rest in the cabins and plenty of time to enjoy the view, we were taken out to dinner again in another restaurant. The next two days we continued our journey equally sporty, comfortable and luxurious to Latuvi and Lachatao, where our trip ended. I was returned to my place in Oaxaca city around 7pm enriched with new knowledge about local traditions, customs, and flora—our second local guide, Carlos, was a real expert in discovering orchids from an astonishing distance, although he could not compete with Sonya‘s, the name of our first guide, experience with the use of flowers and plants. Although Yves knows the mointains by heart, he still likes to work together with guides from the villages to strengthen the exchange, and in their almost 25 years of practice Claudia and Yves have built up a strong friendship with most inhabitants of the villages. They seem to be able to adapt to any kind of needs (from extra sporty to relaxed, vegan to gluten-free) and I strongly recommend to communicate your preferences beforehand. Compared to other travel agencies the tour was unique and I strongly recommend to book with Tierraventura if you have the chance. Apart from all the unexpected knowledge I appreciated most the enthusiasm that Claudia and Yves still develop as self appointed embassadors of this region.

We took the Mitla tour. This was focused, as advertised, on the caves outside town rather than the archaeological site in the center of the village, though it seemed like they could arrange things differently if you wanted. The caves are notable for their ancient paintings, but it's also a pleasant hike just to go see them up in the hillside.

We liked that this was not just one of the standard tours offered by multiple operators. Claudia did a good job of balancing the parts of the tour (including a very nice lunch in the village). The caves require hiring a guide from the local community, but she and he made a really good team combining local knowledge and a more general perspective.

If we're ever back in Oaxaca we'd definitely look at another Tierraventura tour.

Yves was one of the most knowledgeable guides I've interacted with. He speaks multiple languages, had such an authentic love for nature and the area. He and another local guide Sabino, took us on a 5 hour day hike in the Pueblos Mancomunados area, near this village called Cuajimoloyas. It was a beautiful day, and we got to see such different vegetation, flora, and fauna throughout the hike. From the huge agave trees, to the sweet aroma of the pine trees, to the mushrooms that grew at the bottom of the canyon, I was fascinated by the nature throughout the hike. I'd say it was intermediate difficulty, there were some consistent climbing and dropping of elevation - you will get a good exercise :). We started the hike around 10, and finished around 3:30. It was then that we went to late lunch at a local restaurant in the village. Note that I would recommend eating breakfast and bringing snacks since the lunch is so late.

Thanks again Yves for leading a wonderful day hike!

We took a hike through Sierra Norte with Yves and Quetta, and couldn’t recommend it enough. The views were beautiful and the flora and fauna were like nowhere I had seen before. We enjoyed lunch at a restaurant with a terrace overlook that attracted hummingbirds, and enjoyed getting to know Yves and Claudia. They are so passionate about what they do! We did this the first day of our time in Oaxaca, and came to find out the great importance the mountains have on local culture through other tours around town. Everyone was surprised to hear we had been there! It’s a bit off the beaten tourist path but well worth it.
