Basically, I had a month off of work, and I simply wanted to be immersed in Spanish during that time. Knowing nothing about Oaxaca, I booked a flight based on these Trip Advisor reviews and the prompt and courteous responses I received from Rogelio, the school's director. During that month, I likely learned more practical, useful Spanish than I did during my 2+ years in college. One of my teachers, Esteben, even pretended to be a client for my job after he found out that I was trying to learn Spanish for work. And never in a million years did I imagine that I would be conversant in Spanish on topics ranging from hipsters to Social Security policies in America. Sure, there was a lot of gesturing and stuttering (on my part), but this school and my host family really gave me the confidence and foundation to continue my journey to learning Spanish. Not to mention, they are impressively well-informed and great conversationalists. Even toward the end of the month, our conversations were still flowing nicely, and I was learning a ton from them. For those more serious about learning Spanish, I’d recommend staying with a host family, with one caveat – you may not live in the city center, as I didn’t. The center was only a bus ride away, and personally, I preferred to be closer to the school, with delicious home-cooked meals and Spanish conversation over constant nightlife, so this worked out for me.

I finished two weeks of lessons today. It was the perfect combination of formal and informal approaches! My teacher, Estaban, had a great sense of humor which helped immensely. The director, Rogelio, was super accommodating. I look forward to my next visit'

After just completing a two-week course, three hours a day, we can't say enough to capture how happy we were about the experience. Rogelio was a fabulous teacher, always encouraging us to stretch ourselves, and every other student we talked with felt the same about their instructors. We look forward to returning for future classes and encourage anyone considering studying Spanish in lovely Oaxaca to do the same. You won't be disappointed!!!!

I have studied at more than one Spanish language school in Oaxaca and this one has definitely been the best. The owner greats you every day and makes you feel welcome. The owner and my teacher were incredibly flexible and I felt I was treated very fairly the entire time. The school did not force me to buy a book I might not even use (others in Oaxaca do this). I did not have an application fee. My class was small. Several (Spanish) friends told me that my Spanish had improved while I was at the school. Overall, a great experience!!

2 weeks after my visit to Oaxaca to improve my Spanish and I'm still missing the laughter and abundant learning from Amigos del Sol. This was likely the best learning AND travel experience I've had in my life.

I did the homestay+school program. My home was a 8 minute walk to school. School is a 30 minute walk/10 minute bus/cab ride to the city center.

Esteban, Miriam, and Sandra are extraordinarily kind, expert teachers who figure out your level of Spanish very quickly and cater conversational and grammar lessons for your needs. If you're not sure what you want or have last minute changes, director Rogelio's flexibility and warmth will calm your nerves and guarantee a great experience.

On my first day, I could get the gist of what my home family was saying, missing a lot of details. By the 4th day, I was using common phrases, asking questions, and picking up on the different tenses (no more permanent present tense talk!). By the middle of my second week, I was engaging in 2 hour long conversations at breakfast with my house family about the politics and economics of the Mexican government. I'm by no means fluent now, but with the help of the teachers, I have unlocked the next level of Spanish and deepened my appreciation of the Spanish language. (Was there for 2 weeks; 3-4 hours a day; mix of group and private lessons).

I left Amigos del Sol with more Spanish, but also feeling like I now have extended family in Oaxaca. I visited Hierve el Agua, Monte Alban, etc while in Oaxaca, and Amigos del Sol was my favorite attraction :)

No matter your level, any length of time at Amigos will be a fun and memorable experience and you will undoubtedly learn a lot! Do this program!

I’ve been learning foreign languages since I was young and this is by far the best language school I’ve ever been to!!! I was constantly being impressed by their approach to teaching and by the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the school. I came in speaking Spanish really well but wanted to build my confidence and perfect it. I was taking several hours of Spanish a day and was surprised with how enjoyable the classes were, even in the later hours of the day. The classes are extremely individualized and interactive and since I was at the school for so long, I had different maestros which was great because their different styles kept the lessons fun. I also learned a lot about Oaxaca and other areas of Mexico and was able to practice speaking in Spanish about more challenging issues to really solidify my fluency in the language. Every single teacher in this school is incredible and they genuinely care about helping their students achieve their language goals. Rogelio and the other teachers are unbelievably kind, accommodating and flexible. I’ve never felt more comfortable speaking Spanish. Gracias por todo!

At first I was a little discouraged from attending the school despite all the brilliant reviews after finding out that the school is a little way of of the centre of Oaxaca. However, having tried to learn a few different languages in different facilities worldwide, I can honestly say that this was by far my best experience. I was lucky enough to have classes completely on my own from the school director, Rogelio. Rogelio is the nicest man I've ever met and all the other teachers are great too. The facilities are brilliant with tea and coffee 5 minute breaks every hour - just enough time to grabs drink without starting to think back in English again! If you are staying in the centre then there is transport provided to the school. If you are desperately trying to choose between the schools in Oaxaca, as I was, then you can't go wrong with Amigos del Sol. I'm trying to work out if I can come back soon!

Amigos del Sol offers an intimate instructional environment, in which the learner is constantly challenged to expand his or her abilities in Spanish. Teachers quickly discern students’ abilities, then work closely with students to improve their fluency. Students are able to select the number of hours they wish to learn, per day. I was there for two weeks, four hours per day, and was very pleased with the amount I learned.

Teaching staff are amicable, and relaxed. Rogelio, the director, is attentive to your needs, and will arrange quality, well-priced weekend excursions, if you wish.
The school is located about 4 km from the downtown. Staff provide a pick-up and drop-off for those students staying in the city center. Amigos del Sol will also arrange a homestay in the city center or close to the school, if you wish.

My 12 year old son and I had a wonderful experience at Amigos del Sol. Our Spanish improved greatly not only because of the wonderful Spanish language classes offered at Amigos del Sol but because of the wonderful family Rogelio placed us with. This was a wonderful experience.

In January 2015 I again worked with Amigos del Sol. The director is outstanding and generous in being of help. I worked one-on-one with an excellent instructor.

I so appreciate Amigos del Sol.
