We were four adults and one 16 year old young woman. The ranch is in a lovely little pueblo about 30 minutes outside of Oaxaca Centro. It's beautifully rustic with adobe buildings surrounded by huge Organ Cactus. Mary Jane gave us a warm welcome and got us up and on the horses safely with a brief lesson on how to... More

It is an especially good feeling when Oaxacan residents come out to ride. Thank you and don't wait so long before coming again. There is a network of trails we keep trimmed so you can ride the Discover Oaxaca Half Day Ride several or more times and not experience the same route twice. More

Wonderful experience. First time to ride a horse, and it's such a beautiful place to be in. I was nervous in the beginning up and down the trail. Mary Jane was an awesome guider and made me relaxed and enjoy the trip so much.

It is easier for the novice rider to relax after receiving a little basic instruction. Also when riders go out knowing how to let the horse do its job, the horse it much, much more likely to march down the trails cheerfully. It's important to me that my horses enjoy their work and do it willingly. More

The horses are well cared for, the scenery was breath-taking and the little dogs were a delight. My kids (13 and 17) had a great time on their first horseback riding experience. A bit more practice and instruction would have been helpful for me before we headed out on the narrow winding trails.

In fact, Horseback Mexico has often been praised for, indeed, giving a brief instruction demo on trail riding before actually heading out. We offer helmets and half chaps to protect the legs. People are coming out for a guided trail ride not an equitation class. Considering all the superlatives you assigned to the experience: "well-cared for horses, breath-taking scenery, delightful... Our family took the two day back country ride with Mary Jane. We are a mom, dad, and two teen daughters and all novice riders. Mary Jane is an excellent instructor. Her horses are easy to ride and well-trained and in excellent shape. We went through a remote mountain pass. WOW. What an experience. We traveled up 5,000 feet, seeing... More

It was a pleasure! People like you, who are looking for adventure off the beaten track, allow me to have this wonderful job. Thank you. Come back; me or my son Gabriel can give you some practical trail ride instruction and we can move out at a faster pace next time. More

Healthy, well cared for horses and a beautiful natural setting for a trail ride just 30 minutes from Oaxaca center. Mary Jane did a great job of matching horses to riders so that my husband and I (who have only ridden horses a few times) could have a fun outing while our daughter, who does ride, was able to learn... So glad you enjoyed your first ride so much. Torrid Elegance is an amazing mare and you were her last rider before she has her foal in early February. The vet wants her to just walk about freely but no more riders for a couple of months. He said that she is a very, very healthy 20 yr. old mare.... More

Our experience at Rancho Pitaya far exceeded our expectations. Mary Jane is quite an amazing riding instructor. We are beginners (including a 10-year-old daughter) but had been on similar rides in Peru before. Mary Jane offered hands down the best, most professional and personal instruction and riding experience! We went away with far more than just a day of fantastic... More

It's so inspiring to hear riding guests go away having had not just a satisfying experience but one that might make them what to ride more often or take some lessons to better their riding skills. My son was seven when he and I learned to ride, and it's been an activity we have shared now for many years, riding... More

The hills around Horseback Mexico are full of little secrets. From the remains of terracing that date back to pre-hispanic times (is that right Mary Jane!?).... which are just subtle layers in the earth with a hint of stone work, to the tiny tumbling down bridges which form part of very old raised trails through the swamps which form during... Hi Gretchen, I usually respond quickly to reviews but life has been a whirlwind for the past few months. I remember well the day we rode ( Ruins to Hacienda Ride ), the rare Pochote tree was flowering. I continue to find new trails on this ride, talk about micro-worlds. Thanks again. Mary Jane More
