This is the 5th food tour I have taken around the world ... and the best so far! I recommend to all my friends when they go to a new city to take a food tour the fist day if one is available. It’s a great way to get an introduction to the city because the tour guide not only tells you about the food, but also about the history and culture of the people. Our guide, Joel, did a great job! The food tour is sort of a traveling gastronomical tour to 4 restaurants where in the end, if you count everything eaten and drunk, you will have experienced about 3 dozen delights. At 3 of the 4 restaurants the chef or manager explained everything we were eating in some detail. And Joel did great interpretations into English. Where I come from, to have a chef explain in detail what you are eating and provide the stories behind the food would cost you an arm and a leg, far beyond the cost of this tour. And that’s just at one place. I plan to tell my friends about all the great things to see and do in Oaxaca, but even without all that, one should just book a trip to Oaxaca if only to eat. In short, take this tour. You won’t be disappointed.

Wow Jorden!! Thank you, thank you for your wonderful review. It was so great to meet you and Richard. I was hoping that we would match or exceed your expectations based on other tours and it looks like we did. We think that Joel is a fantastic guide and an all-around great person. We're glad that you agree. Thank you for spreading the word about Oaxaca Eats Food Tours.

This food tour was simply fantastic and excellent value for money.

It started with the excellent customer service, we had an evening tour booked, however my fiancé was unwell and so we were unable to make it, at short notice they did everything they could to rebook us and made a tour available the next day for us.

Our tour guide was Fernando a lovely lady who was clearly passionate about food and also Oaxaca. She gave us plenty of great insight into the culture but it was not overpowering. She even added extra stops along the way so we could see some great architecture and learn more about the people.

Every restaurant was amazing. They treated us like royalty! Plenty of time spent in each place, really fresh original food. Each restaurant was one that you would never find or go to as a tourist, it made you feel like you were really experiencing the culture. The staff at the restaurants you could tell were pleased to welcome us and tell us more about their culture. In two restaurants the head chefs actually came over to explain the dishes.

Their is also plenty of mescall to taste, in one restaurant we were invited into a private room to view the families private collection where they told us more about their family history.

For the price you get delicious food, plenty of drinks and also get a real authentic oaxacan experience.

I highly recommend.

We had the most amazing tour with Kristina from Oaxaca eats! She was very passionate about her love for food and Oaxaca which really rubbed off on us. The tour was perfectly planned and organized and the food was amazing! Like all the places we visited Kristina made us feel at welcome from the very beginning and gave us a great insight in the food and culture. This is a great way to learn about Oaxacan cuisine and try a variety of traditional foods with an amazing and knowledgeable introduction to it.

This tour was definitely worth every penny and we strongly recommend anyone interested in food to go. If you are not already in love with Oaxaca you will be after this tour!

Thanks for such a fabulous recap of your tour experience. We could hardly ask for a more perfect 5 star review. "If you are not already in love with Oaxaca you will be after this tour!" if you don't mind we may have to incorporate this last line into our marketing efforts? Safe travels

Where to start! We are in Oaxaca for eleven days, and have eaten everywhere from street vendors to arguably the best restaurant here, Criollo, very expensive tasting menu. Of all of our food experiences, this was hands down the best. Our guide, Itzel, was a very charming, animated and knowledgeable young woman, excellent english as she studied languages. We started in a small, charming outdoor market that we went back to yesterday for another meal. Then it was a succession of places, all with a unique history, menu and specialty. At each place we had beautiful cocktails and small mezcal samples, which were also some of the best mezcals we have had. I looked them up and showed Itzel that a couple of them at least would be well over $100 per bottle in the US. She was surprised! But we would have had no idea that any of these places existed if she had not shown them to us. Hard to say which was our favorite….probably the one run by a female Mixtec woman, who uses ancient tradition at the restaurant to grind heirloom corn all the way up to making the products for the restaurant. Or maybe the old mezcal/tequila house which is now also a restaurant. The restaurants were visual feasts as well, hard to explain but I think you’ve just got to do it! All in all we probably had 10 to 12 courses, ending with dessert…it really took the full four hours. My husband and I are avid world travelers, very seldom leave reviews for anything, but making an exception here. Do this tour. You will not be disappointed!

Thank you Janet, this review is just overwhelmingly beautiful. To receive reviews like this makes us incredibly happy that our continued efforts on our customer's behalf are hitting the mark we aim for. We've worked hard but we've also been lucky in the caliber of guides we find to translate our intended message, "more food-less places with small groups for that personal touch." This review is even more amazing since we cherish a world traveler's viewpoint as reference on how we stack up in the food tour world. I hope you won't mind if we use this review, in whole or parts, in our marketing plans! Hope to see you again. Abrazos

As a first day experience this tour simply can’t be beat! Our guide, Christina, was warm, open and very well informed, not just about the foods we were sampling along the way, but about the history and culture of this area. The places we stopped were well prepared to accommodate our party which demonstrated great organization and the samples we received were very delicious and way more than enough. By the end of the Tour we all knew there was no room for dinner! Meanwhile, the Tour oriented us to the central part of Oaxaca city and provided ideas for what we wanted to come back and explore later in the week. Many kudos to Lorena and her staff for this excellent experience. It was worth every bit of the cost.

Thank you for this marvelous review and any words I can add seem to pale in comparison! We love it when we get to read that our hard work and preparation have all came together and especially for you and your group. Kristina is a real pro and deserves all this praise and more. We're glad we could help make your time here in Oaxaca such an enjoyable one. Gracias

We were greeted by Dean and Rocio, and the meet-up point was easy to find. Rocio would be our guide for the night, and we were to visit 4 different restaurants that each have their own unique vibe. Rocio, a native Oaxacan, took the time to explain, not only the food we were eating, but also the culture and the nature around us along with answering any questions we asked along the way. It was certainly a treasure to have her, and she was truly a guide in the perfect sense of the word. The tour was definitely on the pricey side, but I know they are paying fair wages to all the people involved, and they also give a portion to charities. Each restaurant provided us with at least 2 small plates along with a cocktail, and sometimes a refreshing water and a mezcal to end the stay with. This was also mezcal from the traditional method, so they were able to tell us all about the mezcal. It absolutely was a wonderful way to spend an evening here in the heart of Oaxaca.

What a joy it's been to read this perfect review over and over! You have completely captured the essence of a Oaxaca Eats Food Tour. Thank you for mentioning the charities we support (not from proceeds but from the purchased price) because we are firmly committed to doing our small part to make a difference in our community. Your guide Rocio is indeed a treasure and has a encyclopedic knowledge of all things Oaxaca & Mexico. Thank you so much for entrusting us with some of your valuable time during your visit. Hopefully we helped you feel it's worth another visit (and perhaps another mezcal too)!! Happy New Year

Can’t recommend it enough. Start to finish it was well done. Our guide was wonderful and knowledgeable. They use local guides and donate part of proceeds to arts and children charities. We have had food tours all over the world and this is one of the best. Start your journey in Oaxaca with them and the rest of your trip will be smooth. They also made some great connections to other interesting tours and provided a helpful guide to the city. You will not be disappointed.

Thanks Steve for your wonderful recommendation of the Sunset Mezcal and Local Food Tour! Considering that you all are international food-tour veterans we take that as an incredible compliment. We are so happy that you were able to start your food journey with us and to take advantage of our recommendations for other tours around town like the Street Art and Bike tour with Coyote Adventures as well as an incredible massage with Elena at MAE Masajes! Cheers!

After getting a recommendation from my AirBnB host, I booked a tour for me and my girlfriend. Our tour guide Kristina was absolutely fantastic. Of course she took us to great places to eat but also helped share the history of these restaurants and the cuisine we were enjoying. We went back to some of the restaurants from that day later in our trip and visited some of her other recommendations. This tour was the perfect way to kick off our time in Oaxaca. If you're visiting the city you absolutely should book a tour, explore the local cuisine and visit some places that may show up in other guides but also visit some destinations that are a bit 'off the beaten path'.

Add-in that Oaxaca Eats is engaged in several non-profits to help the local dining scene and it's truly a worthwhile experience. Kristina, thank you again for such a great day.

Our success depends wholly upon their participation and response. We booked this tour on the first day of our visit, and what an introduction! Kristina, our guide, knows the food scene in Oaxaca from back to front, and clearly has great relationships with the restaurants on the itinerary (on several occasions the chef came out to speak with us). But she knows the city beyond food too, and was a wealth of recommendations and advice; all of it made our stay for the week better than it otherwise would have been. But more on the food: everything was exquisite, from top restaurants, often coupled with fabulous cocktails (or the most delicious straight mescal). The settings (rooftop terraces, elegant lounges, cool and refreshing courtyards) are as beautiful as the dishes. Come with an appetite, we were very full by the end of the day, it was hard to leave anything on our plates.

The tour was well organized; the company founder, Dean, met with us to share the history of his initiative and to introduce us to our friendly, knowledgeable guide, Kristina.

We were whisked along to the first of four restaurants to sample Oaxacan special treats galore and to dine in a leisurely manner.

Each restaurant offered us several small tasting items that were unique; some restaurants had gorgeous views and others were open-kitchen affairs. At each venue, Kristina carefully translated the host's explanations and offered us an in-depth education of the off-menu delicacies that we tasted.

We learned, for example, about several varieties of mezcal and how to taste it. Kristina explained that it's best to eat much of the fare such as the delicate empanadas with our hands. She also gave us an appreciation for the many indigenous chilis and herbs that flavoured the dishes, including the complex different moles, the refreshing drinks, the colourful edible flowers, the gorgeous chocolate dessert, and so on.

We will savour the memory of this special tour and highly recommend that you schedule this special experience well in advance.

Thank you Laura, we very much appreciate your considerate thoughts toward our tours and for those future guests considering a Food Tour in Oaxaca. This makes our entire team proud to know we were the Highlight of your trip to Oaxaca. In a city with so much to see and do that is high praise indeed. Thank you and please return.
