Do not trust these people. I bought a vase there and they said they could ship, so I asked them to ship it to me in Mexico City. Delivery time is four days. It has been several weeks since I’ve been there and I have not received my vase. Be careful. These people will rip you off.

I love the black pottery offered by the folks at Dona Rosa's shop. I visited for the first time some 30+ years ago and loved it back then as well as I did this past June (2023) when I went to Oaxaca with Adventure Mindfully. I am not sure that the shop gets the publicity that it should as it was not featured on our original tour, but we stopped upon request. We did not have time to see the demonstration, but loved the shop and the folks who helped us.

The place is really neat, the presentation very educational and interesting. I bought a few souvenirs, but be aware that if you buy a mug/cup, do not use it with hot liquids. I did and my beautiful mug cracked. I hope that they post instructions or tell people what not to do .

I have heard so much about barro negro (there are only 2 places on Earth wi this type of clay) and I couldn't wait to get to this co-op shop. It's amazing. Tours are available. They are so happy to share with you. The passion, the love, the creativity is just unbelievable. Inexpensive!

The history of Dona Rosa Studio which produces black pottery is most interesting. There is a huge range of attractive stock at reasonable prices but this does include a plethora of kitschy dust collectors.
The overall experience unfortunately was spoilt by surly staff, no credit card facilities and an unwillingness to discuss shipping any purchases overseas. Not good enough!

I went to the factory and saw the exhibition of the granddaughter/niece hand building pottery, as part of the tradition of black pottery all hand-built on the tour. I then bought 2 piece of pottery, 2 MUGS, in the showroom.
I attempted to drink coffee from then when I got back home, and both cracked, and the coffee spilled everywhere the first time I used them. They smelled strongly of burnt plastic.
These are clearly NOT ceramic mugs, and are plastic, and they are charging for them, and presenting them as Coyoletepec pottery when they are in fact factory made plastic.
Unfortunately, one cracked the entire length of the mug, and the other all along the bottom, and this plastic garbage was not repairable.
BUYER BEWARE. EVEN IF IT LOOKS LIKE POTTERY, AND YOU HEAR A STORY OF LOCAL PRODUCTION BY A LOCAL FAMILY, IT MAY BE PLASTIC MADE IN CHINA!
Maybe go buy in a shop in Oaxaca city where you can pay with a credit card, and address the payment if you are sold fake products

Don't waste your time visiting Donna Rosa Studio in San Bartolo unless you just want to see historical photos of the late potter who "invented" barre negro. You will find a better and more varied collection in almost any of the galleries or co-op shops in town.

this is a must see workshop and museum of fine black pottery, unique and unparalleled, in beauty, thousands of various works, with so much tallent and immagination, hand made still in the old and yet superb techniques and technology, invented and executed by legendary dona rosa, and now followed by her family. just amazing.
spend some time to read the displays of her achievements, and honorary awards, and her contribution to the community.
other than that, all the township of san bartolo coyotepec is full of similar workshop, that are worthwhile seeing and admiring.
this are in all is a fantastic place to learn about the geneiousity and the tallents of the old tribes of oaxaca, that the spanish conquerors could not destroy.

Our small tour group visited the shop of Doña Rosa who started producing burnished blackware ceramics in 1953. Now, many potters i San Bartolo Coyotepec have followed suit. Photos and didactic boards tell the history of this facility. An original kiln can be seen in front of the shop. Doña Rosa's grandson, George, demonstrated the hand building of a medium sized olla with incised and applique decoration. The sales room offers a very large and diverse quantity of burnished blackware: sculptures, dishes and bowls, excised incensarios and luminarios etc. We purchased an excised luminario and a burnished and excised Day of the Dead skull figure. The shop had a lovely Day of the Dead altar and ofrendas honoring Doña Rosa.

San Bartolo is a bit more than 1/2 hour from the center of Oaxaca. Well worth the trip! The only problem is you will want to buy too many things. The selection and prices are amazing. Unfortunately, they do not ship direct to the USA and getting items home without breakage is not so easy.
