Located one block off the Zocalo, this is a major marked with vendors selling everything from hats to offal. The building occupies a full city block with scores of vendors inside and surrounding the exterior. Great place to find inexpensive earnings as gifts, more varieties of chiles than you knew existed or a bouquet of flowers for your hosts.

A very large covered market filled with local goods, produce, and food. It's very busy and crowded both inside and right outside. The outdoor area has a number of haphazardly constructed stalls leaning onto the main building giving off a kind of chaotic impression. The indoor area is fairly clean and well organized with stalls being thematically grouped for the most part. Lots of food, mezcal, clothes, and knick-knacks. most of it looks like it is locally made. Definitely worth visiting.

After hearing so much about this place and also watching it on Andrew Zimmern delicious destinations show, we were all excited to visit this place. This could be tour one stop stop to buy your Moles, Chilli peppers, Oaxaca coffee and other local spices (we did). There is a section for practically everything: breads, cheeses, cacao products, nuts, fruits, juices. Just ask the shopkeepers, they do gladly help you.
Walk to the hall next to the market building and you will get the food court where you can pick you meat and have it grilled for you. Also a good place to try tlayudas.
Note that the whole experience needs a lot of patience and energy, so come prepared. It will be crowded, dont get lost.
I highly recommend you go there, we enjoyed it.

Lots to see , photo and eat and drink . Famous and popular aqua Fresca stall , go down the bbq alley behind the meat section for freshly chosen meat on a bbq with vegetable and sauce choices . Meal for 3 with a beers at around 100 pesos a head and full of smoky buzzing atmosphere

You can see corn tortillas being pressed and cooked and a wide selection of vegetables and fruits that are much much larger than what I find in the USA (even at farmers' markets) and in much better condition and much is pesticide free. A bit more refined than the markets outside of the town but still very authentic.
In the area are several chocolate processors and you can buy 4.4 lbs of chocolate for $15 and even specify a mix with less sugar content if you desire.
Mescal is available but it is a crap shoot in terms of the brands being sold and I would go instead to a tasting room if you are not well aware of the different brands and products.
Despite all the fruits and vegetables the produce seldom makes its way into the menus and onto the dishes served in the restaurants. It is not a vegan friendly environment at all.

Typical Mexican market - enjoyable to walk through just for the experience. Prices are negotiable. I asked the price of a mug (quanto cuesto?) 400 pesos. I asked for a better price: she offered 40. That's without really trying. I bought a quality leather belt (200 down from 250, again without really trying. You gotta be willing to walk away. Know how much it is worth to you. Don't be afraid of paying more than the bottom dollar.

What a crazy, busy and fun market. I found the prices to very good and the people were very helpful and friendly. I wanted to buy baby clothes for my Spanish teacher's three month old daughter as a parting gift at the end of my classes. My Spanish school was a short walk from the market and visited it several times. When I return to Oaxaca, I will definitely return to this market.

It was incredible touring this local market. Heaps of fried grasshoppers for sale (the Mexicans used them in cooking and enjoy them as snacks.) Pigs' feet, huge beef livers, lots of handcrafts. Wow!

This is a bustling street market with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. We came here on the way to the bus stop and grabbed some food for lunch and snacks that day. Prices are quite reasonable and the food is nice and fresh. There also seems to be an indoor area to the market, but we didn't explore that.

Okay, how to describe this place....oh yeah it's a market, just like every other town you are likely to visit. It's covered so it doesn't matter if it is raining. They all sell the same stuff. Lots of locals shopping here as well but don't think you will pay the same price. Only unusual thing you can do here is eat a grasshopper and tequila worm, which we did.

Is the Mercado open on Sundays?

It is open 7 days a week. I found Yelp to be accurate in terms of the hours of operation for the markets and the restaurants in the area but not so much for attractions.
On Wednesday the streets are cleared of vendors and it is a better day to take pictures of the buildings and the area overall.

Is the map location correct? According to google, this is in the city center, not way north.

Hi Jonathan,
I'm not sure why it's showing that way, the market is very close to the Zocalo in the center of town. Have fun!
