About
The Spanish Immersion School is committed to teaching you Spanish — and to sharing with you the wonderful diversity of Oaxaca. We do this by holding classes in important cultural settings around the city as well as in our beautiful space, and by hosting students on amazing excursions to points of interest all around the valley. There are a couple of important differences between Spanish Immersion School and most other language centers in Oaxaca. The first is the patience and energy of our experienced teachers. We believe that regardless of how great our curriculum is, without the best teachers, our program would not be as successful in encouraging confidence and proficiency in Spanish language learners. Second, the combination of this excellent instruction with the quality of our specialized curriculum creates a unique and superior program. With these two factors, our program gets students feeling comfortable speaking from the very first class.

Wow! Where do I begin! I moved here having studied Spanish at the University in LA during the Pandemic, but because of ZOOM, I lacked hearing and speaking skills with 50 students in the class. I joined Spanish Immersion School after settling into my new apartment and was given the most kind, patient, and passionate instructor who I studied with for the better part of a year (I love you so much Estefania!)

During my time with the school, all the instructors became friends as well as the owners. Each day I was greeted with a smile and a hello from anyone I passed by. The instruction was amazing and filled with a lot of conversation using certain grammar rules, a lot of talking, a lot of listening and over time, lessening frustration. My entire program was catered to what I needed to work on most.

I love this place so much, and the people working there! One on one instrcution was exactly what I needed, and I can’t thank Spanish Immersion School enough! The instructors and owners (Lazaro and Magdalena) have become like a little family to me. I promise you will not be disappointed. The school is located in the heart of Centro with quick access to everything you want to see and do while visiting this amazing state.

I live here so I do not have much to say about staying at the school, but I have seen the rooms and they are amazing.

Sign up, and start learning.

Nos vemos pronto mis amigos!

I spent 1 mo. studying Spanish with Sarai, Suyapa y Ana. It was an excellent experience. They rotated the teachers and kept my old brain stimulated for up to 8hrs a day. As an intermediate Spanish speaker the learning curve is tough but I could see the improvement in my conversational abilities. I was able to understand native speakers in fairly complex conversations. All studies were one-on-one which for me is the most efficient way to learn. We studied in the classroom but also went on walks to stores, restaurants learning all the time. I mostly stayed in a room at the school which allowed me to easily rest my brain between sessions. Fredy and Angie were gracious hosts and Mari and Rocky kept the place running. Puerto Escondido is a wild town with a lot of international tourists. The common language is Spanish which i spoke in 95% of my interactions with other people.

I have been to few language schools for the last 3 years, this one is the best. Perfect location, perfect teachers, I had the privilege to stay at their campus, more then perfect! Walking distance to the Centro, the family who takes care of the guests are awesome, you will feel part of their family in a second. Guests make an effort to speak Spanish outside of their classes so you practise even when you are not speaking with your professor.

This was a great experience for me and I learned so much in two short weeks! I did the intensive training and came to the school with very little Spanish. At the end I was able to communicate simple requests and expressions and I had a foundation that has allowed me to continue learning on my own. The teachers were great - I loved that I had different instructors. I also stayed at the school - wow! I totally recommend that. The people are so kind and every morning there was a group breakfast with delicious home cooked food. It was an opportunity to connect with the other students and share, learned and laugh with each other. I met really great people and was enriched by this experience. Also, I have been able to take follow on Skype lessons with one of my instructors. I very much recommend this place!

I spent three months at the school last summer and another two months this year. Basically starting from scratch (Duolingo for a year), I had high hopes and was not disappointed. Instructors are top quality with Linguistics degrees. Their approach is not formulaic, but tailored to students’ individual needs and abilities. I never felt intimidated, but I always felt the encouragement of my teachers. I have learned far more than I imagined I would. The homeschool environment is wonderful and gives students the opportunity to chat with one another over breakfast. Magdalena, the owner of the large lovely home where students live, is nurturing and really makes us feel at home. She’s also legendary for her cooking courses which I take every time I’m there. If you want to learn Spanish in a great immersive environment, this is the school for you. And Oaxaca is a fabulous city with so much to do.

This may be the best Spanish school ever! I spent two weeks at the Oaxaca city location, and two weeks at the brand new Puerto Escondido location. Both were incredible in their own ways. I went during the COVID pandemic and felt completely safe because of the precautionary measures the school and the local municipalities were taking. The one-on-one classes are a game changer for anyone looking for personalized classes. All the teachers are amazing, and are very flexible in terms of tailoring the class to your desires (whether it be have class in the park, go to a market, only learn medical terminology, etc). My progress greatly exceeded my expectations and I have the school and wonderful teachers to thank. I will be returning next year and highly recommend this school to anyone who is serious about learning Spanish.

This place holds a very special place in my heart - it’s an absolute gem. So much so that I’ve been going back for nearly five years. My teacher just inspires me to want to learn more and more! Lazaro has brought together a really great group of teachers. Not only are they very knowledgeable and experienced with what they do, they’re also a team of very kind and interesting folk. In my experience, the organisation has always been spot on and we always get such a warm welcome. This really is an example of how to run a language school; with talent, kindness and plenty of fun.

This school is incredible and really made my Summer! Going to Oaxaca was one of the best travel experiences I've ever had and that's in large part thanks to Spanish Immersion School.

I had 3 wonderful teachers, and their differences in style really helped to unlock something for me:

Laura is wonderfully sweet, warm, bright and playful. She has a very kind heart and gives you the space to make mistakes and develop your thoughts. Conversations with her brought me a lot of peace and taught me about the quiet and lovely side of Oaxaca. She puts effort into planning activities that are fun for you!

Jacob's high energy is incredible and I enjoyed pushing myself to meet the expectations he set for me. We saw eye to eye on many things, enjoyed debating our disagreements and shared many inside jokes. He is flexible, professional and happy to share his many resources with you. I will never forget our conversations and will miss philosophizing on the cafe terrace with him.

Alphonso is an excellent teacher who is chill, laid-back and flexible while also having a strong personality. He is passionate about many things and loves to explore topics with you to find common ground, which makes conversations with him dynamic. I enjoyed our conversations about Oaxaca, music and teaching. It was awesome wandering through markets with him and asking him questions.

Lazaro does a tremendous job of organizing everything and making it run. He is engaged in the education of all the students at the school and is an awesome teacher, I was lucky enough to have him as a teacher one day! He puts a lot of effort into creating a sense of community at the school. MAGDALENA is one of the most wonderful women I've met; kind, generous, energetic-- she will spoil you, worry about you, cook for you, and fuss over you as if she were your own mom. And we all really feel like we are her favorite! And a huge thank you to the house staff, who are tireless and hardworking, upbeat, patient and always smiling!

My wife and I spent four months living in Oaxaca and taking classes at the Spanish Immersion School. We are seasoned travelers in our 50's and this has been the best travel and educational experience we have had. Oaxaca is a magical place, with excellent food and culture. The school director and the teachers allowed us to fully experience the food, language and culture of this amazing city.
Lazaro, does a great job matching the students and teachers and making sure the students are happy with their progress. He cares about each student and wants them to not only learn the language but enjoy the experience of Oaxaca.
The classes were individual tailored to the interests and learning style of the particular student. Jacob was my teacher and my wife had Yesenia. Both were awesome. Jacob is a gifted teacher and probably the best I have had. This is not to take away from the other teachers; we heard nothing but positive things from students about all the teachers.
The school's campus is located at Magdalena's home and bed and breakfast. We stayed at Magdalena's for 5 weeks before moving to an apartment near the school. We would have stayed there for the whole 4 months if there was availability. Magdalena is just wonderful in every way. She is warm, generous, helpful, and has a great sense of humor. When our kids came to visit Magdalena did a special cooking class just for them.
We have been home for three weeks and we miss Oaxaca and the School terribly. We will be back!

Spanish Immersion School offers a perfect balance of linguistic and cultural immersion. The one-on-one formula allowed teachers to focus specifically on my needs, and my fluency improved tremendously. The unstructured format was ideal to explore Oaxaca and discover the culture of this amazing city.
