About
The Spanish Immersion School is committed to teaching you Spanish — and to sharing with you the wonderful diversity of Oaxaca. We do this by holding classes in important cultural settings around the city as well as in our beautiful space, and by hosting students on amazing excursions to points of interest all around the valley. There are a couple of important differences between Spanish Immersion School and most other language centers in Oaxaca. The first is the patience and energy of our experienced teachers. We believe that regardless of how great our curriculum is, without the best teachers, our program would not be as successful in encouraging confidence and proficiency in Spanish language learners. Second, the combination of this excellent instruction with the quality of our specialized curriculum creates a unique and superior program. With these two factors, our program gets students feeling comfortable speaking from the very first class.

Highly recommend the school for all learning levels
    This was great!...I did the semi intense program, morning and afternoon. I fmhad 2 different teachers, they complimented my learning needs...I just wish I had done 10 days in stead of 7. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and modern. The morning breakfasts were delicious and filling. I am not sure what to call the lunch store/restaurant at the school but it is highly worth the price. I wish I ate all my lunches there even tho it is nice to get out to the neighborhood. Also there is a local grocery store a few bucks away which was quite handy. I highly recommend the school and accomodations;

High Quality, Great value Immersive Spanish Language Experience
A deep immersive experience tailored for all skill levels. We were impressed with the high quality of the instructors and the value derived from 1-on-1 sessions. Teaching was tailored to our goals and will serve as a strong foundation for future learning. We have taken courses with numerous highly regarded schools and this was far and away the best. Would happily work with them again in the future. Thank you to Octavio, Miguel, Alfonso and Noemi!

Fantastic experience in a beautiful city
I have had a hard time learning Spanish as an older adult, opting for community college classes that end up being a bit hit or miss due to my propensity to be always traveling. The Spanish Immersion School in Oaxaca was perfect for me. I had five days of intensive study (with homework!). I worked with Vanessa in the mornings and Enmanuel in the afternoons. Both pushed me (gently) to get a better grasp of past tense conjugation, finishing with future tense. Both Vanessa and Enmanuel were unfailingly kind and generous while also staying firm in pushing me ahead. Such a great experience! I did not stay at the school and my break was so short between teachers it was easier to stay at the school for lunch. Coffee every morning was fantastic but the lunches were awesome -- fresh salad, beautifully prepared with care. Jacob was in charge during my week. He checked in frequently to gauge my satisfaction and check on my progress. The experience was so perfect, I expect to repeat it annually in this beautiful city.

Amazing 3 weeks at Spanish immersion school in Oaxaca!
I had an amazing time learning at the Spanish Immersion School! I was at the program for 3 weeks in January 2024 and stayed in the accommodations at the school for 2 of the 3 weeks. Overview of the pros and cons below: Pros: 1. The 1:1 sessions with the Spanish instructors are incredible. Each instructor has great material which they custom tailor to your learning level. I entered the program at an intermediate level but had some concepts that I needed to relearn at the beginner level which I was able to review quickly. That being said there were many beginners at the program who found the 1;1 instruction to be great as well! 2. The classes go beyond learning Spanish. If you want to learn about Oaxacan history, get a food tour of top spots in the city, or chat with a Oaxaca local in a bar you can do any of these things and more during your lessons! 3. The community at the Spanish immersion school is amazing! The other students are so welcoming and if you stay at the school, you have free breakfast every morning where you get to meet people. Magdalena, the host of the accommodations Spanish school is incredibly welcoming as well and can give you lots of tips for getting around town 4. Accommodations are CLEAN, beautiful, affordable, and you have your own bathroom which is amazing Cons: 1. The school is fairly popular so you have to book pretty far in advance especially if you want to stay on the campus 2. The booking process can be a bit challenging since you have to communicate via email and response times can be a bit long. I met someone who wanted to learn at the school while I was in Oaxaca but after some delays in response time switched to another school 3. Since the material is custom tailored you don’t receive a formal workbook with homework assignments and practice which my friends at another school received Overall I would HIGHLY recommend the school and found my experience to be better than some of my friends who opted for other schools in the area who lacked 1:1 teaching or an on campus community.

Excellent opportunity to improve my Spanish and get a taste for Oaxacan culture
I spent a week here taking Spanish classes for 3 hours a day and exploring the city the remainder of the time. While here I had a room on the campus guest house where a daily breakfast was included with my room. I had one teacher for all 3 hours. Her name was Samara and she was excellent. She was a young Mexican woman who has a professional teaching background and was very good at both teaching and explaining her understanding of the culture and current events in Oaxaca. We were able to spend the 3 hours (5 weekdays) on conversation, grammar lessons, and field trips. I highly recommend the school, the teacher, and the friendliness and hospitality of the guest house.

    Fabulous school. Excellent teachers!
I attended The Spanish Immersion School in both Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido in January 2024. It was a delightful experience, and I highly recommend this school. The staff and teachers are wonderful. The instruction is one-to-one. They are flexible and you can choose the length of the lessons. The school in Oaxaca offered tasty lunch options. They also had optional activities that included salsa lessons, a cooking class, and a musical concert, all of which we enjoyed. The school arranged a very affordable homestay nearby. The house was large and there were other students staying there. It was fun to have breakfast together with them. Oaxaca is an interesting, historical town with a number of excellent museums and quite a few good restaurants. The people are very friendly, and the weather in January is fabulous. The school in Puerto Escondido is near the beach. There is a swimming pool. It’s located in the laid-back surfer area of town where there are many restaurants. My friend and I had a lot of fun at these two branches of The Spanish Immersion School.

Wonderful Spanish immersion school in traditional Mexican city
This past January a friend and I studied at the Spanish Immersion School in Oaxaca State, Mexico. We spent a week at the main school in Oaxaca city and the second week at their branch in the beach town of Puerto Escondido. If you are serious about language study, it's a great experience. All instruction is one on one with a tutor. We opted for 4 hours of instruction 5 days per week but there are other options. The teachers are young, well educated, very patient, and once they've conversed with you for a couple sessions, they will adjust their lessons based on their assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. In Oaxaca, the setting is a converted house with a large planted inner courtyard, where they have a small kitchen where you can order coffee and lunch (very reasonable and good) without going out. They also rent rooms there or will arrange a homestay in the neighborhood. We opted for the homestay, which was pleasant enough and included a real breakfast every morning. Extracurricular activities on site included a cooking class and a Friday evening concert. Of course, Oaxaca is a beautiful very traditional city with a lot of fine art museums, handicrafts, and excellent eateries. Puerto Escondido is difficult to get to from Oaxaca City (although may be easier when new highway opens soon), but Lazaro, the school director, arranged a ride for us over the mountains. The branch is two blocks from the beach in the bohemian, surfer end of Puerto. There's not too much to do there if you don't surf and the weather was hot and humid in January, but the teachers were also four-star and the on site rooms were very nice (and a small pool). One heads up: the school only accepts cash payment and in Mexican pesos, so you have to arrive with a wad of pesos, but that was a small inconvenience, and Lazaro will give you a day or two to get the cash together if you need.

    A special school
I spent 4 weeks attending SIS this year. It was everything I had been hoping for and gave me a fantastic jump start to my Spanish language learning journey. My teachers Juan and Leida complimented each other so well with their different teaching styles. Both of them were so patient with a beginner like me. My suggestion is take classes as long as you can to keep the language learning momentum going! I took classes for one month, but could have easily stayed for two. The accommodations at the school are lovely. Magdalena creates a warm and welcoming environment. As a cautious solo female traveler, I felt safe and comfortable.

    Charming setting & solid learning
Charming setting lived in and managed by a loving helpful family. Solid teachers w one-on-one instruction. Flexible. Fun outings w teachers if you so desire. Definite improvement in language skills. We had reserved a room to stay while at the school but found it to be too hot in April/May. Afternoon classes were also uncomfortable for us because of the heat.

    Claro que si
A very special place. Great Spanish instructors who will collaborate with you to find your best learning style and curriculum. One on one instruction for two hour blocks in a relaxed environment. You can stay at the school in one of the rooms and get breakfast, or stay nearby with other hosts. I stayed at the school and it was incredibly affordable, clean, and a great experience. Just a truly great vibe; Magadelena is a superior host. Special mention for my incredible (and distinctive) instructors: Cristal, Jacob, and Juan. Very different styles but so patient with me and very fun to work with. Highly recommended.

I have been to few language schools for the last 3 years, this one is the best. Perfect location, perfect teachers, I had the privilege to stay at their campus, more then perfect! Walking distance to the Centro, the family who takes care of the guests are awesome, you will feel part of their family in a second. Guests make an effort to speak Spanish outside of their classes so you practise even when you are not speaking with your professor.

Wow! Where do I begin! I moved here having studied Spanish at the University in LA during the Pandemic, but because of ZOOM, I lacked hearing and speaking skills with 50 students in the class. I joined Spanish Immersion School after settling into my new apartment and was given the most kind, patient, and passionate instructor who I studied with for the better part of a year (I love you so much Estefania!)

During my time with the school, all the instructors became friends as well as the owners. Each day I was greeted with a smile and a hello from anyone I passed by. The instruction was amazing and filled with a lot of conversation using certain grammar rules, a lot of talking, a lot of listening and over time, lessening frustration. My entire program was catered to what I needed to work on most.

I love this place so much, and the people working there! One on one instrcution was exactly what I needed, and I can’t thank Spanish Immersion School enough! The instructors and owners (Lazaro and Magdalena) have become like a little family to me. I promise you will not be disappointed. The school is located in the heart of Centro with quick access to everything you want to see and do while visiting this amazing state.

I live here so I do not have much to say about staying at the school, but I have seen the rooms and they are amazing.

Sign up, and start learning.

Nos vemos pronto mis amigos!

I wanted a Spanish Intensive for my Christmas Break. I received so much more. One-on-one instruction is so effective. We worked on the places I'm being challenged by Spanish. My colleagues have noticed a huge shift in my ability to be understood. Lazaro creates a supportive community. Draws great instructors and wonderful participants that return year after year.

What an amazing experience! My 12 year old daughter and I both did the 4 hour per day semi intensive program. We both got a private tutor for both our morning and afternoon sessions. Karen, Jacon and Crystal were all fantastic. I enjoyed that classes could be held in the beautiful outdoor setting of the school or at a cafe in town. The first day, our instructors gave us tours of the city (in Spanish, of course).

I went into the program with very little Spanish, but with a strong base in French. I was able to learn a lot over the course of the week and feel like i can now get by at a decent level in Spanish.

I highly recommend this program to anyone who wants to learn or improve their Spanish and discover and amazing city at the same time. We stayed in a nearby reasonably priced hotel, but you can also stay at the school or they can arrange a homestay.

I spent 1 mo. studying Spanish with Sarai, Suyapa y Ana. It was an excellent experience. They rotated the teachers and kept my old brain stimulated for up to 8hrs a day. As an intermediate Spanish speaker the learning curve is tough but I could see the improvement in my conversational abilities. I was able to understand native speakers in fairly complex conversations. All studies were one-on-one which for me is the most efficient way to learn. We studied in the classroom but also went on walks to stores, restaurants learning all the time. I mostly stayed in a room at the school which allowed me to easily rest my brain between sessions. Fredy and Angie were gracious hosts and Mari and Rocky kept the place running. Puerto Escondido is a wild town with a lot of international tourists. The common language is Spanish which i spoke in 95% of my interactions with other people.

I just won’t be able to say enough in praise of this school. I had a fantastic 2 weeks here (staying at the school) and learned so much, not just Spanish but a lot about the culture and unique neighborhoods, museums, markets of Oaxaca. I had already been to Oaxaca several times, but learned more this time than in all the other trips combined.

The family who runs the school, Magdalena, and Lorena, et al, are lovely, warm people. I was so nervous about my trip home and they were so kind and reassuring to me on that day—I will never forget it. It’s a beautiful home environment and if you’re a solo female traveler you will feel very safe and cared for (and even if you’re not!).

The instruction is one-on-one and the teachers are fantastic. I chose to do 5 hours a day, which is a lot, but because the teachers broke it up into traditional learning and walking around the city just talking, I never got tired. I was probably low intermediate? But I learned so much. A shout-out to my maestros Alfonso Tres and Karen, who were awesome teachers and super nice people. I can’t wait to return, actually!

Shout out to the Spanish Immersion School for not only providing a very professional learning atmosphere, but also for making learning Spanish really fun and interesting. I have taken Spanish there several times over the course of a year and have made good gains in my conversational abilities. I truly enjoy the teachers and I most definitely will continue to use their services. In fact I can say that my experiences learning Spanish there and in Oaxaca have been a real highlight in my life. I am so happy I managed to find this place, I highly recommend Spanish Immersion School to anyone who is looking to begin or further there desire to learn the Spanish Language!

I spent two weeks in Oaxaca living at Magdalena's home participating in beginner Spanish, 4 hours each day. All three teachers I had were excellent, caring and fun and every day was different. For a 60 something year old female travelling solo, it was of utmost importance that I felt safe and secure, and I did! Breakfast was a great time and a place to connect with fellow students and travelers. It was here I found out about weekend excursions and day time places to visit, shop and eat after my lessons were over. The school is located in a great neighborhood and within walking to distance to everything. I loved my school experience in Oaxaca and the only thing I would do differently is stay longer!
