About
The Spanish Immersion School is committed to teaching you Spanish — and to sharing with you the wonderful diversity of Oaxaca. We do this by holding classes in important cultural settings around the city as well as in our beautiful space, and by hosting students on amazing excursions to points of interest all around the valley. There are a couple of important differences between Spanish Immersion School and most other language centers in Oaxaca. The first is the patience and energy of our experienced teachers. We believe that regardless of how great our curriculum is, without the best teachers, our program would not be as successful in encouraging confidence and proficiency in Spanish language learners. Second, the combination of this excellent instruction with the quality of our specialized curriculum creates a unique and superior program. With these two factors, our program gets students feeling comfortable speaking from the very first class.

Highest Recommendation!
May 2021
This place is an absolute gem. I stayed in a nice, clean room in their facility and I took individual Spanish lessons in the morning and afternoon. The woman who runs the housing services is an amazing cook and a wonderful resource for any questions or problems. I am a seasoned traveler in Latin America and I highly recommend staying in the B&B and taking Spanish classes. You won't regret it.

Exceeded all my expectations
Oct 2020
This may be the best Spanish school ever! I spent two weeks at the Oaxaca city location, and two weeks at the brand new Puerto Escondido location. Both were incredible in their own ways. I went during the COVID pandemic and felt completely safe because of the precautionary measures the school and the local municipalities were taking. The one-on-one classes are a game changer for anyone looking for personalized classes. All the teachers are amazing, and are very flexible in terms of tailoring the class to your desires (whether it be have class in the park, go to a market, only learn medical terminology, etc). My progress greatly exceeded my expectations and I have the school and wonderful teachers to thank. I will be returning next year and highly recommend this school to anyone who is serious about learning Spanish.

Great activity for quarantine!
Apr 2020
I signed up for classes during the COVID quarantine. I was very impressed by how easy it was to use Skype for our lessons. My professor, Rafa, was so knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. He answered all my grammar questions in detail and ensured I continued to strengthen my Spanish!

Perfect Balance
Mar 2020
Spanish Immersion School offers a perfect balance of linguistic and cultural immersion. The one-on-one formula allowed teachers to focus specifically on my needs, and my fluency improved tremendously. The unstructured format was ideal to explore Oaxaca and discover the culture of this amazing city.

Great School for any level learner
Feb 2020
I attended the Spanish Immersion school for two weeks this Feb. 2020. I have been studying Spanish for 20 years so my level is fairly advanced. I have attended other schools where they had difficulty accommodating advanced learners, but this school did not. Lázaro, their director is very attuned to student needs & paired me with two instructors that were perfect for me. I would highly recommend the school & in particular my instructors, Griselda "Gris" and Norma.

Fantastic Spanish Immersion Experience!
Feb 2020
I spent two weeks in Oaxaca living at Magdalena's home participating in beginner Spanish, 4 hours each day. All three teachers I had were excellent, caring and fun and every day was different. For a 60 something year old female travelling solo, it was of utmost importance that I felt safe and secure, and I did! Breakfast was a great time and a place to connect with fellow students and travelers. It was here I found out about weekend excursions and day time places to visit, shop and eat after my lessons were over. The school is located in a great neighborhood and within walking to distance to everything. I loved my school experience in Oaxaca and the only thing I would do differently is stay longer!

Best Spanish Immersion Experience (vale la pena!)
Jan 2020
I spent 5 weeks at Spanish Immersion School in Oaxaca and it was absolutely incredible! I chose this school based on its glowing (and well-deserved) reviews, my positive interactions with Lazaro (director of the school), and the private one-on-one class structure. All of the classes are private on-one-one sessions which was the most efficient and engaging way for me to learn Spanish. I took a total of 5 hours of classes each day with two instructors, Alfonso and Octavio. It was really helpful having two instructors because I got something different out of each lesson; they could identify different gaps in learning and could explain concepts in their own way. My classes with Alfonso and Octavio were so fun; we would have classes in different cafes in the city, the courtyard of the school, museums, etc. I had the opportunity to meet most of the other teachers at the school who are equally fantastic and lovely. My Spanish improved so much over the course of 5 weeks and has been incredibly helpful working in a clinic with primarily Spanish-speaking clients.

I also had a little housing miscommunication after my first week in Oaxaca, and Lazaro and Magdalena were super accommodating and were able to secure a beautiful room for me at the school. As a solo female traveler, I really enjoyed staying at the school because I felt like I was part of a sweet little community and there were opportunities to meet and hang out with other travelers staying at the school.

The school also hosts various excursions (I went to Hierve el Agua - highly recommend), dance classes, and cooking classes.

Other exciting tidbits: They'll be opening up another campus in Puerto Escondido, an awesome beach town OAX. Lastly, many of their teachers offer online Skype Spanish lessons through the school which is a fabulous way to learn/improve Spanish (especially during COVID times..)

I cannot recommend this school enough. I can't wait to return!

Best Experience Ever!
Jan 2020
My wife and I spent four months living in Oaxaca and taking classes at the Spanish Immersion School. We are seasoned travelers in our 50's and this has been the best travel and educational experience we have had. Oaxaca is a magical place, with excellent food and culture. The school director and the teachers allowed us to fully experience the food, language and culture of this amazing city.
Lazaro, does a great job matching the students and teachers and making sure the students are happy with their progress. He cares about each student and wants them to not only learn the language but enjoy the experience of Oaxaca.
The classes were individual tailored to the interests and learning style of the particular student. Jacob was my teacher and my wife had Yesenia. Both were awesome. Jacob is a gifted teacher and probably the best I have had. This is not to take away from the other teachers; we heard nothing but positive things from students about all the teachers.
The school's campus is located at Magdalena's home and bed and breakfast. We stayed at Magdalena's for 5 weeks before moving to an apartment near the school. We would have stayed there for the whole 4 months if there was availability. Magdalena is just wonderful in every way. She is warm, generous, helpful, and has a great sense of humor. When our kids came to visit Magdalena did a special cooking class just for them.
We have been home for three weeks and we miss Oaxaca and the School terribly. We will be back!

Excellent Experience Learning Spanish
Feb 2020
I just spent a month in Oaxaca at the Spanish Immersion School. I had a fantastic experience. I chose the 5 hour a day option, and my two teachers, Octavio and Ruben, were great. They were both very experienced, and having two different sessions with different teachers worked very well. I enjoyed the different perspectives and personalities.

I also had the school set me up with a homestay, and I spent the month with a delightful family. It provided me with a lot of opportunity for casual conversation.

Finally, Oaxaca really is a magical city to learn Spanish in! I had my classes in different cafes around the city. I recommend the Spanish Immersion School highly!

Spanish Immersion School
Feb 2020
My time in Oaxaca and at the Spanish Immersion School was one of the very best immersion experiences I've had - and this was my fourth. Magdalena is one of the nicest, most helpful hostesses I've met. Her kitchen is warm and welcoming. I can't say enough about the excellent teachers. They are highly skilled and use effective teaching techniques (I am a retired teacher.) The one-on-one relationship is the best for learning. They are open to the direction you want your instruction to take.
