I had not previously heard of this site before visiting Mexico City with Go Ahead Tours. They apparently get more visitors than the Vatican! It was so incredible to see the old and new Basilicas side by side on the huge grounds. Well worth the visit.

Let's just start saying that the entrance fee it's only 5 pesos !
Unfortunately you can't take pictures or video.
As you walk in you may be not impress with the first things you see but as you walk thru the different rooms you'll be impress with what you see. Lots of painting and other religious artifacts.
I truly enjoyed visiting this museum and will definitely come again when in Mexico City.
Please keep in mind that the museum it's on multiple levels and no elevators are available .

There are plenty of Our Lady of Guadalupe object, artifacts, etc. in this museum. Much of it is beautiful. However, the descriptions are all in Spanish. So if your Spanish is poor or non-existent, then really learning and enjoying what you're seeing can be a challenge. Friendly guards are everywhere. Pictures without flash are allowed in most place. The museum costs a minimal $10 Mexican pesos to enter. If you're a Spanish speaker, then I highly recommend browsing through the museumm

The next most visited church after the Vatican. A place where thousands of people visit both pilgrims and tourists. The old basilica is beautiful. One corner has sunk so you get the feeling of standing at a slant. The reason is because the city was built on a former lake site. They say the new basilica can hold up to 10,000 people. Climb the little hill with beautiful rose gardens, statues and fountains to see a small church at the top and get a generous view of the basilicas and the city. A must visit for all.

Basilica de Guadalupe is the third most visited place in The Planet after Mont St. Michael in Normandy France and the Vatican in Rome. The reson are the millions and millions of pilgrims that pay patronage to the virgin Mary who's the patron of Mexico.
Inside there is a special display of the "Zarape" which according to legend the Indian Juan Diego told people that the vigin was visiting him everyday; Story NOBODY believed. So the virgin gave roses to Juan Diego (roses did not grow in winter nor in that area) to give to the townspeople to prove she was for real. Juan Diego Wrapped The roses in his cloth called "Zarape". The story says that when he reached the vilage and opened his Zarape to lay the roses in front of the whole town, an image was impregnated in the zarape of the Virgin. This image has been studied by many scientists (even NASA) and many books have been written about it because even modern Science still can't explain many of the characteristics of the Image impressed in Juan Diegós Zarape. So YES it is well woth the visit just to see the Image of the Virgin that has been recognized worldwide as a true apparition. Even in Paris in Norte Dame, the is a Mexican flag inside the Cathedral with a copy of the image.

The museum is "hidden" right behind the Old Basilica de Guadalupe. There is a big sign over the door Museo de La Basilica de Guadalupe but it remains quite hidden and almost neglected by pilgrims and visitors focused on the main attraction of the Guadalupe Basilica. I have visited the site many times but only this last time I actually noticed the sign and visited the museum. It claims to be the oldest museum on the north side of the city and consists of three floors. The fee is 5 pesos (as of 2015) for those over 12 y.o.; kids enter free. It is strictly devoted to the history of the basilica of Guadalupe, Marian Apparitions in 1531, the miraculous image of Mary, and the religious art of Mexico in general. Most of the signs are in Spanish and English although some are only in Spanish. There are many steps and no elevators so it would not be an easy place for people with disabilities. It is well organized but almost free of visitors.... There are many wonderful religious paintings by Mexican, Italian and colonial artists, some sculptures and seasonal exhibitions. One of the most interesting objects is a stature of St. Michael the Archangel attributed to Bernini. It is not as spectacular like other museums in Mexico but given its narrow focus, it serves its purpose well.

By religious significance, this place can be compared with Lourdes in France or Fatima in Portugal. The complex includes several old churches and cathedrals and a huge modern cathedral.
