My two foodie kids (ages 20 and 28) took this class with me today, and I am speechless (or perhaps just too full) at how wonderful it was. We started with a thorough market tour with tastings and tons of information, then moved on to an exquisite catering/teaching kitchen. With a lovely, similarly food obsessed group of 7, we spent an afternoon creating tamales, salsas, moles, tortillas and sopes, all while learning about the specific ingredients and cooking techniques involved. We then sat down to a gorgeous feast in a beautifully appointed dining room, complete with jasmine tea margaritas, wines and ending with a fabulous assortment of tequilas and mezcals. Dessert was an astonishing vegan chocolate chili sorbet on puffed amaranth and colored wafer flakes. The staff was equally superb, constantly cleaning and clearing and creating additional dishes behind the scenes to enhance the experience. I would return to Mexico City for one day just for this class!

I like to do cooking classes in countries that I visit. I think they are a good opportunity to learn about a country's culture and food directly from a local person. I have done many cooking classes in various countries, and all the ones I have done have been truly excellent.
This experience at Casa Jacaranda blows those out of the water. It's the difference of being on a mountaintop to being in the stratosphere itself. I don't think there are enough descriptors to adequately convey just how excellent of an experience this cooking class is. Beto met as at a local market and as he guided us through the market, we learned about common Mexican ingredients, regional differences, and what these ingredients mean to the people and culture of Mexico. Not only that, there were several delicious stops along the way. On the way back to his home, we received a tour of the neighborhood, stopping in at several local shops along the way (freshly pressed tortillas even though you will make your own excellent ones in the class, and a local chocolate shop selling outstanding Mexican made, fair trade chocolate).
The actual cooking portion of the class took place in his beautiful house. We made the mole and Beto diagramed the process out so that it was easy to follow and understand, which is especially useful for such a daunting and complex dish. The food that we made was superb. But really the experience was on Beto's enthusiasm for relating (saying teaching is to impersonal for what we experienced) to you about his love for his people, culture, and food. This experience is a must for anyone visiting Mexico City for the first time or even if you have already been, you will learn something new. Especially make this an early (if not the first) stop on your visit, Beto will give you so many recommendations on further things to eat and do in the city. This experience was worth so much more than the price of admission and I cannot recommend it enough.

One of the best experiences we’ve ever had. Beto is a long time friend you’ve never met and will take you around his neighborhood to the markets and shops to show you the culture and history of Mexico City. You then go to his stunning home to cook delicious traditional foods. The day ends with eating in the rooftop with many drinks and lots of great conversation. We did not want the day to end. Thank you Beto and Jorge!

I loved the day I spent there, and I am sure the others in the class felt similarly. I signed-up for a cooking class in Mexico City, hoping to learn some tips on one or two Mexican dishes. What I got out of that full day was way more than I had anticipated. Firstly, our instructor, Chef Beto, was very knowledgeable and gracious, and he first took us on a grand tour of a traditional mercado, showing us different exotic foods, interacting with the vendors there, offering us gourmet cafecito, and some delicious handmade enchiladas with blue corn and chorizo from a vendor he had vetted. It was such a fun start to the day! Then, we were taken to his studio/kitchen/home in the Roma colonia, and the setting was superb, the house looked like something out of a decorating magazine, it was exquisitely furnished, with lots of bright natural light and plants everywhere. The cooking instruction was great, we learned the techniques for tamales, making tortillas, sopas, making mole, with secret tips along the way. Finally, when things could not have gotten any better, they did, because Beto invited us to have dinner (a feast) on his terrace, with cocktails to boot. What a dream!

My family of 2 adults and 4 young kids (10/8/8/3) spent a day in October with Beto and Jorge, and it was really fantastic! We had a great time at the market, learning about and tasking local ingredients but the highlight by far was the class itself. Beto & Jorge, along with their whole team made this the highlight of our Mexico City vacation. They were really great about making everything accessible for all of the kids who all had a great time. The food was amazing, and we had such a nice time just hanging out and talking the whole time, it was really like cooking with some old friends. We've done this sort of thing a few times on our international trips, we highly recommend cooking classes like this for a great family activity and Casa Jacaranda stands out as one of the very best!

One of the best cooking classes we've ever done! We learned so much about Mexican cuisine and ingredients during the market tour and then had a fabulous day in the kitchen. We felt taken care of all day and were offered beers, water and snacks all day. It was definitely an immersive experience. We cooked the most incredible dishes in the most beautiful kitchen. The highlight was the green mole tamales in banana leaves that we made from scratch. We would definitely recommend this cooking class to people who love to cook and want to learn more about Mexican cuisine. Thank you for the wonderful day!

If you do one thing in Mexico City, you must take a cooking class at Casa Jacaranda. This was the highlight of my Mexico City trip!
Our small group met Jorge at a local market where we sampled cheese, coffee, salsas, chocolate, tacos, and other amazing produce. Jorge is an amazing storyteller with fantastic energy - during our market tour he shared more about the history of Mexico City, the food & culture. We then walked to his stunning home, where we met his husband Beto and began cooking. We prepared mole, tacos (with homemade tortillas), tamales & salsas. The food was some of the best we had in Mexico City (I swear, the mole was better than Pujol's!). Each person had enough cooking duties to stay busy, while also enjoying a beer and each other's company. We ate our meal together on Jorge & Beto's unbelievably gorgeous roof deck, drinking homemade palomas and Mexican wine. We ended the experience with a mezcal tasting.
Thank you for the incredibly special experience, Jorge & Beto! I can't wait to return to CDMX.

Beto is a fantastic host. He took us around the market, through history, and through the recipe for Mole Pablano. I'd definitely recommend this at the beginning of your trip to Mexico City so you can take what you learn here and have it for the rest of your travels.

Just about to depart CDMX after a perfect week exploring the wonderful and contrasting neighbourhoods. We have eaten our way through the city but our favourite meal by far was the one we created with the help of the lovely and talented chef, Beto, at Casa Jacaranda. The experience at Casa Jacaranda is unparalleled. Our morning began with a tour through a local market where Beto explained the basics of the gastronomic history and showed us many of the different produce and other foods specific to Mexico. We then returned to his beautiful and perfectly curated home in Roma. There, we got to work and made our delicious meal. It wasn't all work, there was beer and tequila and cocktails along the way, as well as many wonderful stories. We then enjoyed a late lunch on the lovely roof top of his home. Perfection, really. Gushing....

Hello folks:
Is the Casa within walking distance of the Fiesta Americana hotel on Paseo Reforma? And, the dress code if there is one would be most helpful. We are booked for 2/27 and look forward to the experience. I thank you sincerely. sbcSoTX

Hello! Walking from the Fieata Americana Reforma would take you something like 45 minutes. It's a 3.2 km walk. I would recommend you arrive via Uber and then you could walk back to the hotel in the afternoon? There's no actual dress code, but comfy shoes and clothes are recommended.
See you soon!

Yes, there are many veggie options within the Mexican cuisine universe! Just make sure that you mention it when you book —you can do that when the booking system form asks for allergies or dietary restrictions. You can also contact jorge@casajacaranda.mx and we can tailor something special!
