I am a professional mosaic artist in the U.S. and I was gobsmacked when I finally made it to the UNAM campus to see this building. I can't even wrap my head around the work that went into this beautiful facade. It's a tribute to Tlaloc, the god of water, all made of natural stone. It's stunning. Go see it!

Go to the visitor center accoss from the lawn from the main library. They offer a free bike tour on a touring 11 person bike. It was great fun and very informative, the tour is done in Spanish.

On a sightseeing-tour – after a delightful sailing experience in the canals of the Xochimilcho Floating Gardens – the bus-tour-company had prepared a bullfight-experience for us tourists.

However, my wife and I see the inevitable result of a bullfight as comparable to the inevitable Endlösung in Auschwitz.
Luckily, 11 km south of Zona Rosa we passed the UNAM Library (vis-à-vis the Olympic Stadium) on the way to the bullring.
So, we left the bus and waved goodbye.

Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México – UNAM.
The world-known library building situated here – more than 10 storeys high – is quite close to "Avenida de los Insurgentes Sur", which runs south from the Zona Rosa city center.
Indeed, the library – as the biggest building on the University Campus – of course has the most imposing tessellated (mosaic) walls, created with the use of thousands of tiny tiles in numerous colors, delivered from all parts of Mexico.
The library was inaugurated in 1956.

The north wall tells about the pre-Hispanic past.
The south wall tells about the Colony era.
The east wall tells about "modern times" in 1956, when the mural was created.
The west wall tells about the university and about "modern" Mexico in 1956.

The University Campus is 7,3 square kilometer (mathematically 2,7 km on each square-side) and virtually every University building has some degree of mural mosaics.
We strolled through the Campus, marveling over the many works of mural art. It was in the summer, so the University was absolutely empty of people.

On the east side of the Campus, we found ourselves in an area of private villas with a strong suburban feel to it, brought about by hens walking freely in the gardens and up the steps to the front door. This was a funny contrast to the mural art, that we had been marveling over.

We could see on our city-map, that there ought to be a Metro-station (Copilco) near by (Metro-tickets are extremely cheap in Mexico City: 5 Mexican dollars which is the equivalent of 0,25 Euro or less than 2 Danish kroner).
A kind Mexican family with two teenage kids accompanied us to the station. Thank you.

The next day our fellow bus-passengers told us, that the bullfight had been an ugly mess.

Driving by this library one is struck by the beautiful mural that completely covers the library. The mural is done by Juan O’Gorman and while I didn’t visit the inside the outside is definitely worth a visit.

Universidad Autónoma de México, UNAM, Central Library is an important cultural institución and it is placed in a unique building designed by Gustavo María Saavedra and Juan Martínez de Velasco, architects, and Juan O'Gorman, painter, sculptor and architect. The works began in 1950 and the library opened its doors in 1956. This is one of UNAM landmarks. The ten storys building is covered with a colorful stone mosaic designed by Juan O'Gorman.

The main library's tower is covered with murals by Juan O'Gorman. Each side illustrates a different period of the Mexican history and the scientific achievements it produced.
