We arrived at the Museo del Tequila y el Mezcal hoping for a lovely evening and were so terribly dissapointed by the bar that we decided not to go upstairs to the museum. We were told that the rootfop bar had been closed since the pandemic, so went to the patio where the server knew nothing about the mezcal on the menu! When my husband asked for an "ahumado" mezcal she brought him one that had no smokey quality at all. I watched the bartender pour a whole bunch of shots, including his, from the same bottle. My marguerita was so sub-par that it was obviously clear that it was made with margarita mix. To make matters worse, they were blaring bad pop/rock music making it impossible to listen to the Mariachi musicians strolling around the square. The whole thing literally and figuartively left a terrible taste in our mouths.

I really don't think this is worth the visit. If you are going to be at Plaza Garibaldi anyway and want to walk through the museum, which is basically a single room with some displays and information posted about how tequila and mezcal are made, maybe it is worth it. There is no guidance. Staff was not helpful or knowledgeable in the least. Our "tasting" involved a bartender pouring us a half a shot of tequila and a half a shot of mezcal and explaining the difference between tequila and mezcal. That is it. Google was more informative.

The tour and tasting is the highlight of my time in CDMX. The guide is incredibly knowledgeable and explained in detail regarding the appellation of tequila and mezcal as well as the various methods of crafting both spirits. It was eye opening to learn that “artisanal” and cost, anjeho and reposado do not necessarily translate into a higher quality or “better” product, that certain methods (charcoal filtering, barrel aging, additives) are done to cater to the US palate. No oranges or limon for purists. I also learned about the relationship between mariachi, Garibaldi Square, and mezcal/ tequila. The guide didn’t mind that I asked a ton of questions and essentially nerded out.

The tasting was eye opening. Mezcal does not equal smokey. Silver is not “better” than aged tequila.

The gift shop has a great variety of spirits not available in the US. They bubble wrap them for travel.

Five stars for this tour and tasting. You get to try three tequilas and three mezcals. Water is provided for between samples. Please know that there are no food or snacks provided, so if you’re a light weight, better eat your Wheaties before you go. I’ll sign up for this tasting again when I come back to CDMX.

After making reservations at one of the restaurants we had about an hours wait. Decided to check out this museum. So glad we did. Make sure you go up to the rooftop and you can take all sorts of shots of different tequilas. Also they probably sell hundreds of tequilas. So if you’re looking for a specific brand you’ll find it here

After visiting the museum I went to the store to look at. I decided to ask the seller a recommendation for a good mezcal. I asked if their honest opinion the museum offered good prices. Very dishonest told me that if offered good prices because they were a museum. I bought a bottle for 800 pesos which I saw today at the supermarket for 500 pesos. Do not buy at the museum! I would recommend La Europea, Alianza or Divina to buy tequila and mezcal.

We went here on a Sunday night around 8 pm and were greeted by several Mariachi bands waiting next to the outside bar under cover from a rain storm. One group was playing providing an instant welcome feeling!
When you enter the museum you have 2 options how to view the museum: On your own (easily done as every exhibit has an in-depth English translation) or with a guide. We opted for the guide and our guide Ricardo was first of all awesome and well worth the cost (still super inexpensive!). He added so many details, answered questions and made the whole experience a lot of fun!
At the end of the tour we had the choice of either going to the rooftop bar (good view of city line) or back down to floor bar for tequila and mescal tasting (included in price). We tasted 3 different tequilas and one mescal and the pours were very generous. Included in our guided tour were also 2 margaritas. We ordered food (not included) which was one of the best Mexican food we have had so far. Mariachi bands played in the bars and it was such a great atmosphere!
While in CDMX don’t miss this experience!

We stopped by in the middle of the afternoon and had to wake the hostess up to get up to the cantina. There were three couples upstairs including us and the employee table received the best service. There were four of them chowing on 2 burgers each. Quite the appetites on these ladies.
My tacos were good but my partners chicken was ice cold in the center so we sent it back and ordered a couple more drinks. Service was slow and it just didn't seem like the staff really cared.
The views are great from the restaurant out to the Square. The manager did stop over to the table to check in with us after the chicken incident, which was cool.
We went downstairs to check out the gift shop and an employee followed us all around the shop...4 steps behind like we were going to make off with a bottle of tequila. We were hoping for that kind of attentiveness upstairs. 😐
The mariachi guys hit us up both upstairs and out on the Square..... it was a slow day . Overall not a great experience .
We had three friends that were going to meet us there and we told them to meet us elsewhere.

This is a good museum to get information on tequila and mezcal production and the history of the drink. There is a very cheap entry fee which provides entry to the museum (along with good answers from the staff to the array of additional questions I had) and a sample of mezcal and tequila at the end. The staff even provide myself and my girlfriend with some additional tastings (FOR FREE).

It is located on Plaza Garibaldi with a good view of all of the Mariachi bands below. It is unfortunate that some reviewers talk about paying too much for the tour without getting enough tastings. Like any other business, this one needs to make money to survive. The entry is less than US$3 per person. The bottles of mezcal cost more than elsewhere but this cost includes guidance on selection a proper bottle. My girlfriend and I were extremely happy with the service at the museum, the wealth of information provided, and the sincere advice we got from staff.

The museum is definitely a worthwhile visit and should be compared to the state-supported art and culture museums. This is a PRIVATE business and deserves to make money as they provide good service and take all financial risks. Go there, have fun, talk with the staff (preferable in Spanish because this IS Mexico), and learn.

We paid for the tour that includes Tequila/Mezcal tasting. We also opted for a tour guide, which was amazing! Not needed, but totally worth it, he gave much more detailed explanations and added another element of fun to our visit. The tasting was great, we learned a lot about different types of tequillas and mezcals, the portions were hefty!! the food at the museum was good. We ordered a "taco mix" to try several different types. we spent about 4 hours here. At the end of tour, they take you to a rooftop, where we ate, drank and listened to beautiful live music.

We went to Plaza Garibaldi to see the Mariachis, which btw are worth it.
Then we went to this “musseum”. It is small and if you don’t have that much time, go somewere else....
After seeing the first floor - for the upstairs part you have to pay 60 “pesos” (aprox $3), we sit in the bar down stairs...... horror!
The waiter ask us what we want and because we were in the Tequila “museum”.... we ask for tequila beverages.... my son ask for a “Paloma”: tequila, lime and grapefruit.... the grapefruit was from a can.... I ask for a Margarita.... it was the worst I have ever tasted!!!! It was margarita mix!!!!! from a bottle!!!!, tequila an the lime was near rotten! I could only drink half of it. My husband ask for a XX beer (at least it was cold). When we ask for the check I couldn’t believed it.... it was 400 pesos!!! (aprox $22). Our very, very, very bad drinks were almos $10 each! and $2 for the beer..... with that kind of money you can drink all night in any other local bar in CDMX!
Don’t waist your time or money here. Go to Zona Rosa instead....
