The area

Neighborhood: Coyoacán
Once you step into Coyoacán (“Land of the Coyotes”) you'll find picturesque parks and cantinas that will transport you back to the colonial era thanks to the brick and stone details of the area. Iconic writers such as Trotsky and great painters like Frida Kahlo seeked refuge and inspiration in this area, and you can see the unique spirit of this neighborhood reflected in its colorful market where nieves, sopes and all kinds of traditional 'antojitos' are a must try. Restaurants and cafés throughout its peaceful paved streets contain traditional but unique murals and decorations, where one can enjoy a mezcal at noon or the best churros with a cup of coffee.

Vivero Coyoacan is an excellent option for walking, but... Be careful with the nursery's plant stores, especially Local Number 11 Vivero Garden owned by Mr. Aldo García López and Mrs. Renata Rodríguez Muñoz, they sell you plants with pests and do not give you your money back. 🦟🕷️🐞🦟🕷️ More than a month and a half has passed, I made an advance payment for pots and plants for more than $1700 and they never gave me my money back! Be careful where you stop to buy plants and flowers!!! 🌲🌳🌲🌳 Otherwise it is a beautiful place to relax and walk!!! 🌲🌳🌲🌳🌲

After visiting the Frida Kahlo museum we went to this park for a stroll with the kids. We were denied entry because the guards saw some kid’s cameras in our bag (very obviously cheap kids cameras) and said no cameras allowed. We pointed out that our latest iPhones have infinitely more powerful cameras and video recording capabilities, but he said they were perfectly fine to take into the park. Maybe they wanted a bribe, not sure, but he cited the park rules again. I told him the rules were stupid. Not sure what else to say about this.

An expansive, working garden (nursery site for trees and plants) hosted by SEMERNAT environment secretary. Loads of paths and interesting trees, some with identification signs. Plenty of open space for social distancing. Remarkable, lovely cactus garden - great for kids and adults. 2km running track is well used but in good shape. Get fresh coconut milk or fruit from the vendors at the gate. Lots and lots of squirrels.

Only two blocks from our guesthouse and on the way back from the town, we popped in. A nice green oasis in a decidedly tree lined neighborhood, there is lots to see and you could even by a plant or two.

We went there because it was quite close to our accomodation and it turned out to be great. Nice place to walk and relax. Some people gave us peanuts and we could enjoy hanging out with squirrels like kids :) It was a nice thing to do and not feel that you are in an enourmous city. Recommend, when you are in the neighbourhood but it's not a must visit.

Viveros de Coyoacán is a large tree nursery (as suggested by the name "Viveros") and a public park Coyoacán area of Mexico City. According to the information, thenursery was founded by Miguel Angel de Quevedo in the early 20th century to provide seedlings for the reforestation of Mexico’s, especially area around Mexico City. The Viveros today is the popular area for people to come and exercises, jog, walk, bike. In addition people just come by to feed animals and enjoying the nature and the inhabitants. It is currently has the status of National Park (since 1938). Visitors can reach by Subway at Veveros Station. It is also easier and closer (to me) to get to the historical village of Coyoacan from here. On the way to historic Coyoacan or Frida Kahlo Museum, stops to visit the big flower market at the corner of Avenue Mexico and Calle Melchor Ocampo to enjoy flowers and garden plants.

I slipped into this urban garden thinking that I could use it as a shortcut to the village. While I was wrong, I was not unhappy to be there because it's a beautiful and peaceful escape from a huge and sometimes overwhelming city. It even has exercise stations!

It is not a tourist attraction. It is an attraction for Mexico City's inhabitants who want to get a little lost in green.

Parque Viveros has a 2km track circling it for joggers, and lots of other trails and paths for walking. The park is completely flat, so you can stroll leisurely if you wish. The "streets" of the park are all named for the variety of tree lining them. The park is big enough where even on a weekend you can find a quiet spot without many people around. It is a breath of fresh air in a heavily polluted city. Buy a bag of peanuts at one of the many gates and feed the friendly squirrels if you'd like. On any given day you may see outdoor yoga groups, fencing, mock bull fighting, even knights jousting inside the park.

We walked through Viveros on our way to Coyoacan's main square (we took the subway and got off at the Viveros stop, which worked out perfectly to see the park). Viveros is much different from a larger park like Chapultepec- it's not quite as large, so it's quieter, there are fewer vendors (actually, I didn't see any vendors), and everyone was exercising- it seemed like we were the only ones who weren't there to go jogging!

The park is so beautiful, with smaller paths branching off the main path that look to go on for miles (well, maybe not miles, but hundreds of meters at least). Many of the paths had beautiful tree canopy cover overhead, which made it feel like you were walking through a lush estate. It was neat to see the park is still functioning as a tree nursery, as we saw many workers out watering the trees. The fact that it's a nursery gives the park such a unique look- many of the trees are planted symmetrically, in rows of straight lines, which you don't often see in nature.
