I thoroughly recommend visiting Casa Gilardi. A must for architecture buffs but for anyone i would say it's a wonderful experience. We were shown around by one of the sons of the family that live there (sorry i didn't catch his name!) and his love and knowledge of the building and Luis Barragan's work (and Mexican modern architecture in general) is very clear. The space isn't huge (you don't see the whole building as his family still live there) but you see most of it - and it really is life-affirming architecture. Built with living in mind we were guided around in such a sensitive way as to show off its strengths. I would recommend booking in to see this (I contacted them a few weeks before my visit to CDMX) and Luis Barragan's studio in one half day as they are near to each other.

What a dream. The house is beautifully conserved and if you are lucky one of the son (extremely knowledgeable and incredible nice!) will give you the tour. This is one of Barragan’s last projects. Everything comes so beautifully together. The simplicity of forms. The vibrancy of the colors. The perfectly thought transitions. To visit this house is a gift for your senses and your soul.

Please excuse the lengthy review of a small place.
The Good:
It’s a wonderful space. The design is simple, the paint colors are brilliant and the outdoor spaces and pool are beautiful. It’s an example of less is more.
The Less Good:
It’s not really a tour. There’s a 5 minute intro given by the less than enthusiastic son. The rest of the time is spent walking around unguided. We were there for maybe 1/2 hour.
The Bad:
Although I enjoyed my time there, it made me kind of sad. It seemed more like an Instagram destination than an architectural endeavor. I don’t really blame the family for taking advantage of it, as the color schemes, balconies and painted glass windows lent themselves to beautiful photos (of which I partook also). Nothing wrong with that, I guess, but it left me with an empty feeling. In addition, the cost (not including the surcharge to take photos) is about 4X the cost per person of any of the National art galleries in Mexico City. Let that sink in for a second. I guess that’s where we’re at in 2020.

we took our time to visit the Giraldi house. friendly staff. book by phone or email.
is a private house, so some areas are not available. but its worth the visit.
you need to pay an extra fee if you want to make pictures in the inside.

very informative and graceful tour of this house designed by Luis Barragan given by someone who grew up there who is sensitive and well informed of the architectural import of building

It is a traditional mexican designed house. Although pretty, tour is short, and not worth the 15 dollar tag per person. There is mostly two courtyards and one hallway to see.

Keep in mind you are visiting a private home that is very much lived in. The bilingual son of the occupants let our group inside at exactly at the appointed time, spent some time talking to us about where Casa Gilardi fits in Barragan's oeuvre, and then left us free to explore on our own. Beautiful swimming pool and rooftop with the jacaranda and jacaranda colored wall. Then we headed over to Casa Pedregal for a Barragan double header--all over, a great day.

Casa Gilardi is the last creation of noted Mexican architect Luis Barragan. It's a treasure and still a real home lived in by the people who commissioned it. So visiting is a special treat and requires advanced booking. The inside is stunning in its simplicity and use of bright colors and structural massing. To be frank, it's not a cozy place and not everyone would be eager to live in it, but it is well-worth seeking it out if you can get a reservation and if you groove to art and architecture.

Gorgeous house but beware the man at the door arbitrarily charging fees - up to $50 a person if you look like a trusting person who can afford it.. definitely not worth the price of entry.

Or maybe it did. Who knows. After making a 10 am reservation months ago we had still not been greeted or invited in by 10:35 am when we left. No thanks, I’ll go to the anthropology museum instead. Terrible customer service.
