We did not plan to visit, but due to a change in our itinerary we gave it a try and WOW were we amazed. The drive is not for the faint of heart as some of the curves are unguarded, but the view from the top is not to be missed. The statue of Christ is beautifully designed and the distance from the surrounding cities led to a perfect opportunity to reflect on the wonder of the creation. Set aside some time to visit Christo Rey, you will be glad you did.

Huge place with many great things. The Chapel is beautiful, the panoramic views are superb. Highly recommend it. From Guanajuato it takes about 1.5 hours to get there and another 1.5 to get back. Unfortunately the tour van we took, left Guanajuato at 2:30 and the place closes at 4:00, so when we got there, we only had less than 10 minutes to visit. If you take a tour make sure it leaves Guanajuato around 1:00 pm or you will have very limited time to spend at the sanctuary.

We hired a taxi to drive us to Cristo Rey. The drive up was 1 hour from El Centro de Guanajuato. Winding and beautiful we finally arrived at Cristo Rey. We went on a Sunday and the place was packed. We ended up walking to the actual monument and even though it's a slight incline, it was easily doable. The monument itself is extremely impressive and beautiful. Mass was just finishing and we were able to go into the church and take a ton of pictures. Standing underneath the Christ monument was breathtaking and meaningful. Lots of places to get snacks and souvenirs too. I highly recommend taking the time to see this magnificent attraction.

Nothing special. To me it wasn't worth the time what I spended.
Never ever go to this monument by local bus!!
It takes about 2 hours to get to Cristo bay,and one hour to get back to Guanajuato. The price is 21 mxn each way.Of course is very "local experience",but takes a lot of time. The "camion" stays one hour at the monument, during is absolutely nothing to do in this place, then moves back to Guanajuato.
The driver was amazing, asked s lots of questionssnd forced me to learn Spanish:) Great experience:)
The view is beautiful, but really nothing special.
I not recommended to visit except you have a loooots of time or living local and have a time to spend.
The organised trip from Guanajuato centr to Cristo bay costs 150 mxn and promis to take 3 hours. It can be the best solution.

Felt like we wasted a day here. The road is terrible and takes almost 2hrs from Guanajuato. Spent a few minutes and that was enough. I’m a retired Catholic, so the religious aspect wasn’t there. The view was OK, nothing spectacular to see other than the statue. If you’re a standard tourist the pictures are good enough.

Driving thru Guanajuato we saw a Monestery perched on a hill about 30 minutes from our hotel. Up around 2800 meters. Drove up. Pretty church, easy drive and the statue well worth the trip

I have been to 'Cristo Rey' several times. I enjoy the peace the place brings to those people visiting, wheather locals or people from other countries.Anumber of images can be located at the Webshots site. Some are under the title 'Monumento a Cristo Rey' while others are under 'El Cubilete' and still other usless titles. Good luck on your searches. The images are there, you need to use an open mind when searching for them.

This monument is one of the most beautiful of Mexico City. The first time I visited Cristo Rey was 1986, since then I have been there a few times. I was just there December 2002 and as time goes by is more fascinating. From what I know Cristo Rey is going under construction and I believe every year that goes by it gets more and more popular as time goes by. If all goes well for my family and my self we are planing to go back to Cristo Rye on December 2003. If anyone would like to share info or opinions about Cristo Rey with my self E-mail me at mrwulverin@aol.com

Before attempting your assent to the top, make sure your car has good breaks and that your radiator works and that it has plenty of anti-freeze in it to prevent over heating. It will take about an hour to reach the top, depending on that day's traffic. On the way up (or down) don't be alarmed if you see locals selling food, drinks, or trinkets. How they got up there I have no idea, but I'm glad they were there as we did have to stop once and let the truck we rented cool down as the heat gauge was reaching dangerous levels.

Once at the top you'll get a breathtaking view of the surrounding haciendas and villages below, and if you know which way to look you an see the capital city of Guanajuato off in the distance. At the very top is a museum and church with an 11 story statue of Christ the King (Cristo Rey) with his outstretched arms looking out over the people of Mexico.. It looks a lot like the one you see over Rio de Janiero in Brazil. I wondered why they picked this desolate spot in the middle of nowhere to put this monument and I discovered there was a very good reason for it. As it turns out, this spot marks the very center of Mexico. It is both halfway between the east and west coasts of Mexico as well as the halfway point between the north and south borders of Mexico. Pope Pius X! dedicated the original statue back in 1923, but it was destroyed 3 years later in 1926 and had to be rebuilt. There is no charge to visit this site but they do accept offerings for its upkeep if you care to contribute. If you don't trust your car or driving skill to make the journey to the top they have taxis that will take you there, but then what fun would that be!
