A beautiful square ... this is simply a beautiful square. It has a lush tree canopy that is simply beautiful. It is surrounded with great restaurants and views of the theatre. We dined at three different spots on our brief trip and loved the views, the people watching and the food.

Just down the stairs from where our taxi dropped us and across from the Theater, the garden plaza is a green respite in the hot weather. Mariachis stroll by and ply their trade. There are 4-5 good restaurants on shaded patios so you can eat, drink and people watch. And that we did

The Jardin de la Union is the heart and soul of the city. At night there is an energetic and Fun atmosphere as Mariachi bands and performing students entertain. The area is where the city's best bars and restaurants are located.

El Jardin is very charming and offers travelers a look at both historic and modern-day Mexico. The garden is situated at the center of the city and can be used as a through-way to other nearby attractions. Its perimeter is surrounded by restaurants, shops, artists and other street vendors selling their wares. The numerous trees, with their trunks painted white, are trimmed in perfect squares and rectangles. A gazebo stands alone in the center. The garden, like most of the city, is kept impecably clean. Visitors can relax on one of the many benches to observe the plentiful activity and the many passers-by. Outside diners may hire musicians for a song or two while they eat, and men may buy a rose or silver jewelry for their lady from one of the many vendors passing by. This garden is a wonderful place to stop and catch your breath as you move through the city while sight-seeing or can serve as a place to spend the entire evening. One of the many smells, sounds or activities here are sure to be of interest to any and all who travel to Guanajuato.

Jardin de la Union is quintessential Guanajuato. This is the center of activity for the city -- not the only place by any means, but it's definitely the epicenter of tourism (very few Americans), Mariachi music, political activism, outdoor dining, and dancing to band performances in the gazebo. People came as school groups, families, couples, and solo admirers as well.
We walked the gardens almost every night. The amount of "life" here was overwhelming. My cell phone video feed runneth over!
The landscaping here is a thing of marvel. Somehow the trees are expertly cut to provide an overhang for those at "normal" height. I never hit my head, ever! This plus the white-tiled flooring made for an experience hard to resist.
Memorable site worth visiting, revisiting, and revisiting again.

This is not just a review of Jardin de la Union, but a 'travelers tips' on the culturally rich city of Guanajuato - a more 'real world' San Miguel de Allende and a beautiful town.
1. Jardin de la Union is in the Centro region (city central). Try and get a hotel in the Centro region. There are plenty of small hotels with oodles of character around Centro and they are very affordable.
2. One restaurant recommendation - Truco 7, which is not in the Jardin- but on the next street. Nice ambience and food. The waitress was not very friendly though. Try the Tortilla soup.
3. Try and squeeze in a trip to the silver mine at Valenciana - you can walk down into the no longer in use mine and it is a good experience. Also a good experience is the taxi ride which weaves through the myriad tunnels in Guanajuato.
4. The city is very safe. And the people are super friendly and nice!! Everywhere we went, they would go out of their way to help. Much love to Mexicans!
5. Budgeting for food- at local restaurants expect to pay about 100 to 150 pesos ($5 to $7) for lunch including soup, a starter and a main course per person. Street side food about a third of that.
6. Taxi rides are easy. But just agree on the fare upfront. You can get to most places within 70 pesos. In most cases the fares were reasonable.
Bit on buses in Mexico (in all my posts on travels in Mexico) 😊
1. Bus anywhere in Mexico is a good idea. They are cheap, safe, comfortable and are extensively networked.
2. 'First' class buses as they call it are express buses that go from one city to another without stops. They are more expensive and luxurious than 'Second' class buses that stop at an infinite number of stops along the way.
3. 'First class' ones which we have tried to be good are ADO (in the Yucatán region and up to Mex city), Primera Plus and ETN (the latter two serve north of Mex City). ETN has a super deluxe service with airline business class type seating (though on one leg they were very late).
4. Intercity buses are from the 'Central De Buses De Guanajuato' (~ 60 pesos taxi ride from the city center). Bus tickets can be bought at outlets in the city center. Some OXXO (7 Eleven equivalent) outlets sell the tickets too for a small commission.
5. We have been advised by a local to not book online as he has had cases when the txn seemed to go through but in the end he had to rush to get it done. (We haven't tried it)
6. Online system does not take international credit cards.
7. They take international credit cards when you buy at their counters.
8. If you are flying in from a different country as we were, you could book as soon as you reach Mexico. Most cities have plenty of coverage and even a day or few hours booking in advance is enough.
9. Quick note on 'Collectivo' (shared mini bus)- you can hail these shared rides for within the city. Very cheap. But no room for luggage.
Hope this helped and safe travels!
Cheers

We sat in a restaurant along the side of the garden and rested in the shade of the great trees and watched the crowds of people outside on a Saturday evening out to walk, dine and laugh with friends and relatives
A lovely place to relax and experience the lovely town of Guanajuato.

It's a lovely garden in the middle of town. There are shady places to sit and watch the world go by. The restaurants around the garden seemed a bit intense and touristy.

Will the weather be a factor for this tour or any other tours we want to take? We will be arriving June 16th and I are been seeing different weather reports from different sites that say it will be raining throughout our stay.
Written June 13, 2018
I heard it was raining. I would just double check the forecast.

how do we sign up to take the walking tour from Jardin de la Union
Written May 11, 2016
There is a booth at one of the corners of JardÃn de la Unión, right in front of the church. There are bilingual tour guides there with flyers and pictures to show you the different tours they have.
There are walking tours or with transportación included;tours that include meals, tours just for the city of Guanajuato and/or the mines, etc.
The prices vary but they are not expensive at all.
