I loved taking my children to the zoo. It was a must. I am happy to say that over the years they have improved it. These days I don’t go often any more, only when somebody comes to town visiting, or am asked to go. My children are grown ups now and soon will be doing themselves with their families.
The Guadalajara zoo is a big area to walk. You can rent strollers but if you can’t walk for long, it is not recommended because is is in a deep descent going in, into a canyon like view. What we used to do was walk around and down to where the large animals are, and then get in the train, which would give us a ride around the zoo, and then would bring us back to the main entrance.
There are all kinds of animals in a well advertised route, and also, there are areas for marine life, reptiles, birds, and a petting zoo.
I am happy to see how many changes and improvements they have made through the years. They have several booths with food along the way, and two or three big restaurants with sandwiches, burgers and pizzas; and there is an access to an area called Selva Mágica, Which is an amusement park( it is a favorite.
The only reason I give it such a low score is because there is not a big cleaning crew, nor trash deposits along the way. It is very sad to see that much trash on the floor, specially on weekends or holidays.

We took a taxi to the zoo from our hotel and the zoo is large and a lot of things to see. So be prepared to do walking and wear comfortable shoes. We do recommend to get on the train/trolley it takes you around the zoo to view the different areas of the zoo. Lots of terrain and their tickets and food are reasonable for the amount of things to see and is well maintained. The best overall was the tram ride over looking everything from above well worth the extra money to purchase everything! They even have a playground area and areas to lunch with family and feed animals.

I visited this zoo in July 2020 and had a pleasant experience overall. There is lots to see at this zoo and the animals seem well-cared for. There is lots of walking to do so make sure you wear proper shoes!

The best zoo I have visited. Buy the total ticket and do it all. The safari is incredible and so is the tram. I have never been closer to animals that were more lively. Simply a wonderful day. The Bengal tigers and hippos were exceptionally impressive.

We spent 2 days at this place and still didn't see everything! Not 2 full days, but about 4-5 hours each day. There is SO much to see. The highlight for me was going into a monkey cage and feeding the monkeys!
Our town has a small zoo. THIS zoo was great!! Only cost a few dollars too.

The monkey-land exhibit was incredible, allowing visitors to enter the monkeys' habitat and get up close and personal with many different species. The zoo is VERY large and I recommend not going during the summer months because it's extremely hot. They offer a guided tour on a train-like vehicle which is a comfortable alternative if you have young children who will get grouchy from walking the entire time. If you're interested in "covering the entire grounds" then I recommend taking the guided train tour or leaving the kids at home. To explore the entire property you need a good 3 or 4 hours. Food and beverage vendors line the entrance to the zoo so make your purchases before you enter or after you leave and you'll save yourself a good deal of money. The zoo is located in not a great part of town so if you drive be sure to park ONLY in OFFICIAL zoo parking and leave NO belongings in your vehicle (a general rule for any Mexico travel)

We visited the zoo with 2 "grandparents" 2 adults and 2 kids (4 and 11). We all had fun.
We selected the package deal with the zoo admission and the train ride. We enjoyed the ride around the zoo, we even rode the train twice.
There is a LOT of walking, and the zoo is somewhat hilly. There are numerous snack bars, and the prices aren't too bad.
The kids got their faces painted and it looked good.
Animals were displayed in nice settings and seemed well cared for. There was a fair amount of improvements being made, too.
This was our second trip to the zoo, and we will go again.
Be sure to take a look at the barranca (canyon) at the far back of the zoo, you can even eat lunch back there with a great biew and a kids playground.

Living in San Diego turned me into a zoo snob but feeding a giraffe at the Guadalajara zoo finally cured my snobbery.
And the monkey house! What fun to spend some time in a very large cage with those cute, tiny squirrel monkeys!
If you’re traveling with kids, this is a great way to spend a day. (Try to distract him so they don’t notice the amusement park located next door, or you’ll be back for a second visit!)
But this suit is great for adults, too. Did I mention that you can feed a giraffe?
I recommend splurging and purchasing of the diamond package. This will give you a free access to the zoo train, the sky tram, the aquarium, and the safari (where you can feed those giraffes). The adult diamond ticket cost about 15 bucks.
A couple of practical considerations:
Congrats if you succeed in purchasing and discount ticket because you are over 60, but this means they won’t let you on the sky tram. You might have more fun pretending you’re still 59.
I suggest taking a taxi or an Uber to get to the zoo. The trolley bus from central Guadalajara will get you to within about a kilometer of the zoo, but it might also get you institutionalized for latent schizophrenia you weren’t even aware of. It’s crowded!
The zoo isn’t all that big, but you can make use of the zoo train and round-trip sky tram to save wear and tear on your feet.
Verify bird show times so you can design your day appropriately.
We were there one Saturday in January and it was amazingly crowded. Plan on about four hours unless the monkeys stage a rebellion.
Cheap food is available but not very good and the “coffee” deserves international condemnation. I noticed a lot of people brought picnics. If you do, there’s a beautiful picnic spot near the train station 3 where the sky tram turns around. It overlooks a fantastic canyon and you may even find a friendly giraffe to feed.

The Guadalajara Zoo is a very nice and pleasant place to visit. It's very clean, very green, and quite a bit of space for the animals. It's not a very huge zoo, but give enough to start in the morning and finish mid-afternoon, if you see all the exhibits.
And when you go to the back, there's a great view of the canyon.
By the way, the giraffes are great. They lean over their fence and you can feed them grass and pet them. And take pics. Very fun.
