It is ZAPOPÁN, with almost 1.5 million inhabitants, the municipality of Jalisco with the highest per capita income. During your visit, it highlights its historic center and, especially, its basilica.

The Plaza de las Américas (or John Paul II) is located in front of the Basilica of Zapopan, and is characterized by its metal kiosk and four large fountains, as well as two large bronze sculptures representing the god and goddess of corn. The Basilica of Zapopan is a Franciscan shrine, the second most visited Marian enclosure in the state, preceded only by the Basilica Cathedral of Our Lady of San Juan de los Lagos. It is an 18th century architectural monument that houses the Virgin of Zapopan, also known as “La Generala” or “La Zaponanita” or “La Reina y Madre de Jalisco”, and is accompanied by a pilgrimage every October 12.

Zapopan is a small gem in the middle of Guadalajara. It's small and quaint. I wish I had had more time to explore this area. I'm looking forward to going back and eat in one of the many restaurants and look at the shops. I was so taken with this area I'm going to book a hotel here next time I visit Guadalajara.

The Basilica is beautiful, but the biggest impression was how picturesque the streets of old Zapopan were, with small shops and trees, it is very beautiful and worth the trip to visit!!

The basilica is one of the wonderful attractions in Zapopan, I loved the wonderful displays in the chruch itself and the excellent cantera walls. The cantera makes it so original because the cantera was taken from the ground itself that surrounds Zapopan. The people of Zapopan and surroundings villages worked together to create the beautiful plaza de Zapopan and the beauty itself, la basilica de la virgen Zapopan.

Zapopan residents are absolutely specific in underscoring that they are from Zapopan and NOT from Guadalajara; and that's because Zapopan is the most modernly developped site in all Mexico. There are some sections of avenida Americas where you can have the feeling you're walking around some upper-class areas of some rich European or Northern-American city. Yet, in the middle of this ultimate example of Mexican modernity you can spot a nice and tine central square where the Basilica pops up reminding you that you are still in Mexico. But why should a tourist travel over 10 miles from central Guadalajara just to see one more Mexican-style church unless you have friends who live there or you are going to one of the many luxury malls nearby and happen accidentaly to bump into this church?

Zapopan is really a waste of time, unless you are a cheap beer drunkard and love music composed of 4 notes and less than 3 words, of course you can always ask for forgiveness at the conveniently located basilica, amen.

This place is certainly worth visiting. There are a couple of historical churches in the area that you should visit. This one is funny, in that it has a very impressive front and square around it, but the actual church is somewhat small and simple on the inside. There's lots of history around it, particularly the pope's (John Paul II) visit, so it's a very important landmark.
