I went there expecting A Lot more. I love mariachi and wanted to sit at a local restaurant and listen. This is a very tiny area and the mariachis actually being there is a hit and miss. I went by as I walked around the arena couple times and they were not playing. We sat down at one of the restaurants and the service was not too great. If you’re in town and looking for an authentic restaurant to go to and listen to mariachi, this is definitely not the place.

Lots of music and great Mexican food. Ten bucks per song if you want a private table serenade. Safety was good, cops constantly patrolling.

We decided to go here for food drinks and some music. Instead we found a near deserted square. A few mariachi standing around and most shops closed down.

The food was ok, the beer cold. The music absent. Maybe this was just due to it being a regular Tuesday night. But at the time of visit it was not worth the time spent.

A very unsafe place, I went expecting to find not many mariachis, but a few singing and playing since Guadalajara is considered the land of the mariachi. What a disappointment it was to arrive at the place and only find 2 or 3 mariachis just standing, waiting for someone to hire them, adding that the place was dirty, it felt like a dangerous atmosphere and we even found a person urinating on the side.

Terrible experience, I would never return to that place

Come here at night, drink and eat as much as you want, you will never find a cheaper place on Mexico.

Ask for the Mariachis to sing a few songs and have a great time.

I was expecting a large square with families and couples dining and enjoying cocktails while mariachis came by to serenade them. WRONG
I came on a Saturday night in an Uber. From about two blocks away, there were stray mariachis staggering about half loaded - some trying to flag down cars for I don’t know what purpose.

When I arrived, I was on a dingy pedestrian walkway with a not terribly attractive cafe with a mariachi band playing outside. There was bar on the other side of the road with music blaring out from the door (the patrons didn’t seem to be there for the purpose of being entertained by mariachis). There were a fair number of vagrants passed out or digging thru garbage (and other derelict vagrant-like activities.

The area around was somewhat sketchy and a fair amount of riffraff passed by while I awaited my Uber.

What a lovely evening!

a real disappointment. My wife had visited here in the 90s and told me how the Mariachis strolled and sang, also about the restaurants. well we walked there only tom find drunks, hookers and druggies. we wasted our time, don't waste yours. want Mariachis, take a cab to Casa Barrachi, real stuff ther.

Thanks for your comment, we are working to make it like in the 90's, I regret that during your visit you had a bad experience; in the restaurant Patio Tapatio (umbrellas area), we have a 100% family environment, private security and mexican music show, you can see more information on facebook as Plaza de los Mariachis. In addition, to hire mariachis this is the right place, because the place you mention have only one mariachi, in the Plaza de los Mariachis are approximately 70 groups. We would like you visit again the place and keep a good memory of the place.

Having read that the Plaza was run down and dirty, and having found Plaza Garibaldi in Mexico DF in that condition, we decided to give it a miss. However wandering around one evening looking at what was going on we heard the music from some distance and headed over - and found a little gem.
It looks like it has had some work done in the recent past and is a smallish area with food outlets at one end, a stage at the other, and tables and chairs in between. We really enjoyed it, and all the people were extremely friendly. We saw a couple of mariachi bands before a show - which had 2 dancing couples and 2 singers - which we really enjoyed. The male singer was particularly good.
Understand that this is not a "made for tourists" spot, but we really enjoyed it.

If I had a limited time in Guadalajara, would I visit this once hot spot?

It depends, but it's not a top 10 by any means.

Find out what time - and if - it's thriving because much of the time it's not terribly lively.

The musicians when they're playing are awesome, but the neighborhood is not Guadalajara's best especially at night.
