We went to climb Izta with a group of friends. It is a nice long day with spectacular views, especially watching Popo erupt fairly close to you. Very scenic and we all have the best pictures we could dream of. We flew from US to Mexico City.

After calculating the cost for logistics if we did it on our own, I got a contact for a local company called Nomada. Not only they were amazing and above and beyond any of our expectations, their prices ended up being cheaper than if we did everything on our own! Instead of traveling with any gear, sleeping bags and tents, these guys took care of everything (all sleeping bags were clean with a washed liner, really good tents, good inflatable sleeping mats) and we all had a camp fire the night before. They cooked amazing food for us (all from fresh ingredients) and gave us lunch for our backpacks (good food for mountains, such as trail mix, power bars, dried fruit, sandwich and gatorade). As soon as we returned, a hot soup and quesadillas were ready for us! Their vans were super comfy so we could take a nap while they drove us onto our next adventure (Pico de Orizaba). I highly recommend them! You can reach them at NomadaTravelMexico at gmail. Feel free to message me with questions because we had a really good time and I'm happy to pass on more info!

This peak doesn't require a guide, but route finding and safety are greatly enhanced with a guide company. It's a long slog with over 5000 ft of total elevation gain after going up and down all the bumps. My private group hired a guide company that did not work out well.
I do NOT recommend Obsidiana Travel (formerly Monkey Experience Adventures) for these reasons:

-Didnt feed us well or sufficiently to support exertion
-Consistently behind schedule, necessitating last minute changes
-Failed to distribute necessary equipment to all climbers and verify that all climbers had what they needed
-Fomented and participated in drama
-Micromanaged guides, did not allow them to use their best judgement for their assigned climbers
-Made capricious decisions, twice deliberately preventing capable, strong cIimbers from summitting despite no safety or other concerns
-Lead invited extra person to our private group without asking us, potentially changing guide:climber ratio
-One person left the group in disgust and anger
-I left the group and hired an independent guide for the last climb (Orizaba)
-Note that her hired guides were great, just subject to her many rules, many of which they disagreed with
