We tried to get closer then the view you get from Cholula. But finding a tour operator in Puebla seems quit impossible. The best way is to rent a car. We didn't had the time for that so we had to stick with the views from Cholula. And that was super impressive as well.

We have seen the vulcano Popocatepetl several times. Firstly on the way with the bus to and from the ruinas of Teotihuacan. Second time when we were flying from the Mexico City to Cancun. The world's most notable volcano is really something special. You would normally visit the site on your way to Puebla and Cuernavaca if you book one of the daily tours they offerfrom Mexico City and Puebla.
