A Liquor store with excellent service!
Dec 2013 • Couples
We were able to purchase a few bottles of Tequila prior to the store closing for the season last year. Louis delivered them to a friend’s house for safe keeping until we arrived in Zihuatanejo. Who does that? Bodega Tequila did! Looking so forward to our next visit to Zihuatanejo and of course our favorite Bodega!

A good intro to 'craft' tequila...

The Bodega is a small mid-block storefront a block or so north of Juan Álvarez. Inside are simple displays of non-'brand name' tequilas - all are local ones crafted in the area. To the right is a small bar counter with a chalkboard above it listing a few mixed jarritos, fruit/tequila blends on ice, available to go (in small unglazed pottery cups). I met Giovanni - an ex-pat American behind the counter who is running the business (opened in 2011) while his brother is away. He was very friendly and gracious with free pours of several of their recommended tequilas, both reposados and añejos. It was very interesting to compare and contrast the 4 variations I tried.

The bottle selection wasn't huge, but I felt they offered good options. They also sell small wooden casks of varying sizes for those who like to age their younger tequilas, a neat concept that I - as a fairly novice tequila consumer - hadn't considered. A little disappointing that they didn't offer any mezcales (as that is a stronger agave drink that the region is known for), but I was told it is something they'll consider as their roster expands.

I bought a 400 peso bottle of Miravalle Añejo to bring home to Oregon - haven't opened it yet, but I'm sure it'll bring back a flood of warm memories from sunny Mexico. Definitely worth a visit, whether you're a tequila pro or rookie. By the way, they only take cash (several ATMs on nearby streets, so don't worry).

¡Salud!
