About
Lucy's CuCu Cabana is a unique shop specializing in hand-picked, high-quality, authentic Mexican folk-art. Lucy and Gil travel all over Mexico for several months every year searching for original pieces. All of their merchandise is purchased directly from the artisans at fair prices. Whenever we travel we’re always on the hunt for local folk art. Lucy’s is THE spot in Puerto Vallarta. For decades, she and her husband have traveled the country sourcing handmade arts and crafts. Their collection is beautiful (specializing in hand carved, hand painted Huichol items) and so reasonably priced. We ended up coming home with five different items.

If you’re visiting in the next couple of months, take a stroll off the Malecon to their shop. They’re officially retiring and closing in a couple months.

Pro tip: Be sure to grab one of Gil’s books while you’re there - he has a notorious sense of humour. They sold five in the time we were there.

If you are tempted to visit Lucy's, do it NOW! I have been collecting beautiful handcrafted, unique, colorful, handmade Mexican art and craft pieces for about 20 years from this store. The quality of the pieces is a cut above most souvenir stores and is very reasonably priced. I say GO NOW because I was there last week and there is a sign in the window that Lucy is looking to sell the business and retire. A sale may or may not occur, so there may no longer be a Lucy's in the near future. Lucy and Gill are friendly people, as is everyone who works there. They are knowledgable about the pieces because they know all of the artists personally. When some people hear "art pieces" they think expensive... not so here. I have a collection of happy colorful little faces made from coconuts that are all unique, and cost about $7 each. Some of the hand carved and painted pieces I have purchased were more expensive because of the artistry and workmanship, but they still represent good value for the price. There is a wide range of prices and items. If you visit Puerto Vallarta and find yourself caught up in the beauty of the tropical colorful vibe, do take a little piece of that home with you from Lucy's!

Thank you for your wonderful review. I hope to find someone who wants to carry on our legacy. We are in our 26th year of collecting Mexican Folk art. We are known for the Oaxacan alebrijes, which are the hand carved, hand painted animals. Also, I do love the Coconut collection. It is amazing what the artisans can make from a coconut -Mermaids, hummingbirds, cats, suns, coco women decorated with different herbs- star anis, cat's claw, etc. that are colorfully painted. We also have coconut dolls, besides the mermaids, we have Mexican Jewish princess, quite precious. As we say," for great gifts that you don't want to give away". Come and shop at Lucy's and you can cheerfully decorate your home.

Even after being there many times, going to Lucy's I always the feel warm heart beat of Mexican artistry and hand crafted traditional magic! Lucy and Gil have a genius eye, an intrepid travel gene and a gift for cultivating relationships. Their annual adventures take them back along lesser traveled roads to visit artisans and their families. They bring back a world of tradition and whimsy- every item comes with a story. It isn't just shopping, it's sharing a journey. The BEST SHOPPING ever!

Oh how sad we learned this trip that Lucy's is for sale and may not be in Zona Romantica next year. So many treasures we have purchased over the years from Lucy which we will always cherish. Not only beautiful but unique, handmade Mexican art.
If you are planning a trip soon, make sure to visit this 5-Star store for a unique shopping experience.
Even though we will miss Lucy and her store, we wish her and Gil the very best in their retirement years!

Stumbled upon this store during the southside shuffle (which is fabulous btw). I ended up buying so many different items. Many things were very affordable and also great for gifts. They were serving delicious complimentary margaritas during the SS shuffle. Lucy was the sweetest person!

If you are in PV, you should definitely go to Lucy's. It is a small but lovely shop of mexican folk-art with very friendly, helpful owners and salespeople. I saw a wonderful rug there, but hesitated to buy and when I went back, it had been sold. I was so disappointed that the helpful person working there called the owner, who had 2 more by that artist in the warehouse. She brought them in that evening and I ended up buying one (also a beautiful silver bracelet). In addition, they gave us recommendations for a simple, delicious, non-touristy restaurant and place for desert. Friendly people and beautiful things!

Wish I had read the mediocre reviews before going out of our way to see and shop in this "super amazing" store. NOT so super amazing. I wouldn't even say amazing. It's a nice store, but nothing to write home about

This fun shop is a great place to stock up on wooden animals from Oaxaca (pronounced wah-HAH-ka). The brightly painted carvings can be amalgamations of more than one animal to create fantastic creatures. Or they can be highly stylized interpretations of a single animal, often in contortionist poses. A relatively new tradition, Oaxacan wood carvings have become wildly popular.

Prices at this small shop are very reasonable and reflect the owners’ amusing taste in unusual handmade crafts from many states throughout Mexico.

I agree with someone else who thinks that this place is mis-categorized as an attraction although it is certainly an attraction to me because I love Mexican folk art especially the little hand carved, whimsically painted little "critters" (zoo) from the Southern regions of Mexico.

It's just a little place (store front really) on Basillo Badillo along the "shopping" stretch of restaurant row but it has been a stalwart in community for many years. The owner is very involved in local charity work and so lovely.

Drop in, browse around, chat with her about the provenance of her unique collection, maybe pick up something to take home that will remind you of the unique art and culture of Mexico. Great place.
