Statue of John Houston
Apr 2019
The statue is more or less central on Isla Cuale in a small plaza. It is nothing special and only of passing interest unless you are a film bluff or fan of John Houston.

Not Impressed
Jun 2019 • Couples
I have visited Isla Cuale many times, the famous Island in the middle of PV, and yet have never seen the John Huston statue, famous for his iconic "Night of the Iguana" movie with Richard Burton.
No wonder I never visited his statue, because it's not loved nor taken care of, but just a place you wander past.
Here's a pic of his statue, just in case you never see it when you walk past too.
Cheers, Paul
PS. Do visit Mismaloya, just south of PV, the actual film site of the movie, it's pretty cool. And stay at the Hotel Casa Iguana...you'll love it!

Thus place is a little quirky and usually quiet. Some nice shops and a nice statue pbj John Huston . Coincidentally I almost always see an iguana when here.

Peaceful park and always a friendly iguana
Jul 2017 • Couples
Although this area could be spiffed up a little it still has a nice sculpture of John Huston, some murals, shops, vegetation and interesting people, cats and iguanas, and if you come in from the right part of town, a swinging bridge to get there by.

Nice place to read a book off the beaten path
Oct 2017 • Solo
This is a really quiet plaza that gets very little foot traffic, despite being tucked in downtown Vallarta. I love going here to read a book or getting some food "para llevar" and hanging out with the kitties in this plaza while I eat. People seem to not like it as much as I do, but if you want a little quiet place to escape the hoards, this is almost unbeatable.

John Huston deseerves to have a statue
May 2016 • Family
As a John Huston fan, I think he deserves to be immortalized in a statue here. His filming of "Night of Iguana" made PV popular. It grew from a sleepy village to a major tourist attraction after film was released. The statue sits by itself on the north end of the little river island. We were staying on Gringo Gulch and made the walk down there many times. When my son and I went there after dark, a plain clothes man ID'd us. giving some sort of shakedown. It was a bit frightening. Suggest staying away at night.

Fun to say hi to John
Dec 2014 • Couples
I agree with others, with many of the business's being closed not as many people walk the east end of the island.
But with that said its very peaceful and the statue is a good picture spot. So each year we stop by to say hi to John

Ignored cultural area - very sad and disappointed
Dec 2014 • Couples
We have been in PV 4 times before and we looked forward to visiting this quiet area... However, it has been neglected for the past 2 years and even the washroom in the cultural centre is now closed. We think the city of PV should really need to look after this special area to showcase the Mexican culture...Please do something - make a garden, place some beautiful statutes, place some nice benches and let some artists display their work...

Seems to be going downhill
Mar 2014 • Friends
We stopped here as part of an excursion from a cruise ship. So you could say we were a captured audience. But anyways the statue was nice but this area seems to be going downhill. I saw a handful of empty shop which indicates that this area has seen better days. After seeing the statue there is not much else to do in the area except search for some open souvenir shops which we found a block away from the statue. Don't go out of your way to see this.

A sad state of disrepair
Jun 2012 • Couples
We've traveled to Puerto Vallarta for the past ten years and always found time to stop in our walks to visit the John Huston Plaza. I'm sad to say the immediate area of the plaza and Huston's seated brass statue in particular has gradually fallen into a state of disrepair. The plaza is now empty of businesses, the brick and paving stones are broken and dirty and the concrete base is crumbling. The general impression is one of abandonment and neglect. Going the same way as Dick and Liz's Casa Kimberly and their pink bridge on the hill. There's no room for nostalgia and history anymore in Puerto Vallarta's rush to expand the tourist industry.
