We explored Old Town on 01/01/22, New Year's Day. Even though we were told by staff at the hotel we were staying at that everything would be open on New Year's Day, that simply was not true. Just 2 blocks away from the beach everything was closed. Isla Cuale market was also open. We had to take a taxi for 130 Pesos from our hotel as the old downtown was about 25 miles away. As we were seeking to find a place to have breakfast about 6 blocks from the beach, we encountered a local lady who owned a restaurant... she said it was open. We followed her there and found it also to be closed. Our only recourse was to go down to the beachfront where everything was open. After breakfast we explored all areas of the old downtown. Quite interesting and in the afternoon there were more shops opening up. From what I read online, small locally owned shops and restaurants do not accept credit cards or US dollars. I read that we had to buy with Pesos only. This is a lot of baloney. Nearly everyone accepts USD and most will take credit cards as well. Just make sure you do your calculations correctly for pesos vs dollars. In 2022 a peso is worth about 5 cents.

I enjoyed my walk through the market area . No sure I saw all of it . Several streets and entrances got me confused. I think another visit and I could get more organized. Each time I said I need to back later , well I never did ! Always got sidetracked toward another viewing opportunity.

The outdoor flea market in Viejo Vallarta, just off the Malecon walkway, starts by the beach and wanders up through a pathway that takes you about three streets up.
It was wonderful to "chit chat" with stall vendors, and haggle on the occasional piece of hand-made Mexican culture. There were the cheap imports too, but we focussed on the local handicrafts.
I got to practise my Spanish, and with a few laughs and tutelage, was able to stand corrected for future effort at the language.
We came back to the market area at least three times during our stay there in early 2007, and it does require a steadfast "I'm not convinced; I'll think about it" or "No estoy muy convencida. Lo voy a pensar" usually.
I found it a great place to also seek shade from the sun under the large banyan trees where the vendors are set up.

There is so much to see and do in Puerto Vallarta! From the old town, Romantic Zone, waterfront boardwalk, shops and restaurants. Also plenty of adventure excursions, both land and water. I do NOT recommend going to the zoo. It was old, with dirty animal enclosures. The animals did not have anything to interact with within their enclosures. Just a big concrete area with a lot of the animals residing there in solitary. No companions. Nothing to play with. It broke my heart. Aside from that, everything else about Puerto Vallarta was wonderful! We went on an evening art walk, and saw so many wonderful art Studios and artists to talk with. The restaurants were all fantastic, from the little local small places to the more expensive restaurants such as Si señor. I highly recommend that restaurant, it’s worth every penny!

You get to explore local stuffs and SUPPORT local businesses in this area! The bonus part is that you are able to use your international credit card with no fee in this area or if you would like to, you can use peso currency to negotiate the prices, but the workers have worked so hard on those materials. We have managed to buy a mask and the worker have made sure that it was wrapped carefully. I will definitely come back to buy another one!

Absolutely lovely market with an excellent selection of products. Not the cheapest spot for groceries but the service was great and it's a well organized, amply stocked market, right in the center of the Zona Romantica. Quite a gem.

We needed a little help to find it after walking along the boardwalk but it was worth the effort. The kids found souvenirs and saw plenty of iguanas. Don’t accept first price. And shop around. Most of the stores have the same things but it’s worth looking.

You're walking along and suddenly you wonder where your kids are only to look around and see they've been aggressively pulled into a vendor's shop with a sombrero placed on their head and being told you now owe $40 for the "new hat." Or having another vendor put a 2lb "solid silver" necklace on your kid's head and arguing with them when trying to hand it back and then having to just drop it on the ground at their feet since they won't take it back voluntarily. Simply put, if you want to go to a zoo where YOU are the animal then by all means visit this place, otherwise avoid it like the plague. Under no circumstance would I take a child or even a teenager there. It's scary enough when only worrying about your own safety.

This is a must see area with many shops on two levels and in multiple locations. However most of the shops sell much of the same goods. We thought we'd only go once but ended up going a couple of times for souvenirs.
If you go, don't forget the part of the market that's on the island in the middle of the Cuale river across the suspension foot bridge. That part extends all the way down to the beach and the Malecon.

A very nice, but they all sell the same stuff. Probably the best prices in town, but the constant requests too "come spend your money....you can afford it" or "make my first sale today" got old pretty fast. I tried to buy a 25 peso Olympic silver coin, they were asking $1800 pesos ($150 usd) and I checked ebay..they sell for $19 usd, so know your prices before going in.
