After booking my family for a trip to Acapolco, I discovered that it is one of the top five most dangerous cities in the world. Undeterred, my partner and I and her 11 year old son had a fantastic time, mostly staying on the resort. The beaches went on forever, and aside from the guards with machine guns on the beaches (and in military vehicles in town) there was no evidence of violence. There were few tourists, perhaps because of the scare, but the staff seemed grateful to have visitors; and the food, particuarly in the a la carte restaurant was truly sensational. We went on a side trip to see cliff divers and also went snorkling. Both were wondeful and well worth the money. If you scratch the surface a little, there appear to be expat Americans running ayahuasca retreats in the area, but we kept our adventures to those in the brochure, and we were fine!

We travelled through the old town , it was good to see where it all started and see some of the great homes and hotels built here when Acapulco was probably the Jetset capital of the world. We went to the lovely main town square where there where lots of little shoe shine booths set up and people getting their shoes cleaned, this is very traditional and something you do not see very often anymore.
Also there is a lovely bronze statue of a shoe shiner, so this square must have a long history of shiners . Great to see, well worth a visit.

One cannot have a complete tour of Acapulco without visiting the old part of the city. It has character which is missing from the newer glitzier portion. You can imagine going back in time to a simpler time. Don’t miss it.

It’s one of those city names which brings to mind glamour days gone by, and old movies with great stars of the past. We were driven through Acapulco from the dock area. The guide pointed out the many places of interest, including properties once owned by the rich and famous like John Wayne. It was like a trip down memory lane. The trip included the more modern parts of the city too, and there were stops for photo opportunities! Overall, the city looks quite run down, and a bit shabby. We read it wasn’t a safe place to walk about so we stayed with the guide and the other sightseers. We were glad to have seen it, but that was about it. The highlight was the cliff diving show, separately reviewed.

Acapulco's tourist hayday ended 30 years ago. Many places are in disrepair. That is part of its charm. Also, the US State department has told it's citizens to not visit. I'm a US citizen and I like Acapulco because there are so few Americans. Going to a place that is filled with locals is a treat.

It was our first time in Acapulco - and surely we wanted to see as much as possible of the city had to offer. Our guide - Sebastian Hernandez of acapulcoforall.com - showed us most of the city and told us the history of Acapulco (and it was a lot of it). From visiting the famous part Las Brisas thru historic hotel Los Flamingos to adrenaline driven La Quebrada divers we’ve seen it all - and behind all of it was a colorful stories told by Sebastian. Come and see for yourself - the Old Acapulco is fun.... save yourself a headache of driving - hire a driver like Sebastian...take advantage of tours he has to offer - you will learn a lot of history of Acapulco.
