This place made our Tijuana visit really memorable. The history of northern Baja inside is fascinating, the IMAX theater is excellent, and we even saw the Grammy-nominated Baja Orchestra play in the new orchestra hall, which has excellent acoustics. For anybody who thinks Tijuana is just the Avenida Revolucion, obnoxious hawkers and cheap margaritas, this is a must-see.

We used the San Diego Scenic Tours company for an afternoon in Tijuana on 5-30-13. The experience with this company was excellent. I will definitely use them again since it was a great price, professional and fun. We did the San Diego & Tijuana Tours (Tour A-222). They picked us up in a medium size tour bus with large windows and comfortable seats at a nearby hotel and offered a live tour as we drove around San Diego and Tijuana. Sections of Tijuana has really cleaned up a lot and I felt very safe. We had enough free time to shop, visit Cultural Center & dine. Important Tips: Remember to call the night before to confirm your tour reservations; Be on time; Stay in the areas shared by the great Tour Guide.

Like much in Mexico- a cluster of confusion and wasted resources.

According to my GPS map it was an eight minute walk from where we cross the border but definitely not true. We stupidly hopped in a taxi instead of getting an Uber in for a five minute ride the guy charges $10. I tried to fight him on it a little bit but he wasn’t having it, we should’ve asked first. But whatever – they need it more than we do obviously, but no one likes feeling ripped off.

We entered where the round building IMAXand nothing was being shown the day we arrived. So we walked into the other main building that has the museum. The two pleasant ladies at the information desk said we have to go to the IMAX going to buy tickets to the museum. We went back to the IMAX building and they said no go back to the main museum. So we went in a different entrance at the main museum and there was nothing there to buy a ticket so we just walked around and saw a nice photography exhibit about immigration and protests in the 1940s.
We never did find where to buy tickets or where the regular museum of artifacts are.

From there we picked up an Uber to Calle revolution to see the touristy stuff. A three dollar Uber, for a 10 minute ride.

My teen grandkids wanted to cross the border, but what do do there to justify the drive? I do not like to drive across the border, I walk, so I needed something within walking distance. I searched for something clean and interesting that reflected the culture rather than the desperation for tourist dollars, and this place is perfect. Wonderful staff, informative displays, lovely botanical garden, beautiful grounds, and a small aquarium...all dirt cheap. This is best approached from the north side of the river, as that side is much less tourist-driven. It is approximately a mile from the starting point of the Tijuana walk.

While visiting we decided spontaneously to visit CECUT to see a movie in the IMAX Theater. We were surprised to find that on that daythere was a celebration of the three holy kings on that day in Mexico where a special sweet bread is eaten traditionaly on that day called "Rosca" and that around the entire theatre there was a huuuuge rosca that was being given away. It was meters and meters long. It was atreat for the children as well as for us. We later went into the theatre and saw the most amazing movie about Baja California wildlife, specifically speaking sealife and littoral mammals, narrated by mexican scientists and wildlife experts. The takes were wonderful and the audio magnificent. The Theater was only half full. There is an Elevator for disabled guests which was good. Parking was private and easily accesible. Prices extremely reasonable. Did not have more time to explore the rest of CECUT. Definitely recommended.

Unless you are from Tijuana, the last thing you think about is "Cultural Center". As a Tijuanense (what us native Tijuana peeps are called), I can honestly say this OmniMax/Planetarium theater is world class. I have been to IMAXs and planetariums all over the U.S. and Europe, and even my kids always say: "The one in TJ is better!" (my kids are not from Tijuana BTW).
The theater offers 2-4 shows at any given time. Prices are a fraction from just about any other theater. Yes, movies are dubbed in Spanish, but they do offer English soundtracks once in a while (ask). Even if you can't understand it, the theater experience is still amazing.
They have a little restaurant, live theater, museum featuring different exhibits (again world class exhibits -BodyWorks, Torture Devices from the Middle Ages, etc.) again, all this for a fraction of the price you would find just about anywhere else. Check out the garden while you're there, as they often have folk dancing, music and all kinds of different regional artforms from all over Mexico (especially on the weekends).

Everyone who visits Tijuana should try to find some time to visit the Culteral Center (Spanish Acronym CECUT). There is a lovely free botanical garden, an IMAX theater, a concert hall, a permanent history of the Californias exhibit and multiple traveling exhibits. The new section of the building called "El Cubo" is a modern art exhibition space that rivals any similar space in San Diego. There is always something interesting going on at CECUT. Also, Sundays are free admission days for everything eXcept the IMAX theater and the concert hall.

Most Americans think of Tijuana in terms of downtown, cheap beer and crime. But there's another Tijuana of elegant suburbs, excellent restaurants and great art.

CECUT is a fabulous establishment. Its exhibition on Baja alone is worthwhile -- highly creative and excellently executed. But there are usually also intriguing temporary exhibits: I saw some amazing avant garde stuff. And then there is the IMAX cinema and all sorts of other activities.

Tijuana has also has opera, concerts, much more. So go and discover! You'll be glad you did!
