About
Bahía de Loreto National Park protects Loreto Bay, located in northwest Mexico off the coast of Loreto Municipality in the state of Baja California Sur; the city of Loreto abuts park territory. The park covers an area of 206,580.75 hectares (510,472.2 acres), 88% of which is ocean surface; the islands, islets, and coastal regions that comprise the remaining 12% are mostly uninhabited. Five main islands serve as the park's chief focal points and tourist destinations: Isla Coronados, Isla del Carmen, Isla Danzante, Isla Monserrat, and Isla Santa Catalina. Though the municipality of Loreto is not within park boundaries, it is the primary starting point for tours of the park and is considered a major influence on the area's ecology.[3] The municipality had a population of 11,812 at the 2000 census.

8 of us booked a 4-hour tour with Wild Loreto Tour Company and asked to include snorkeling for 4 of us. Juan picked us up at our HomeAway house rental at exactly 8:30. He was courteous and a very safe driver. He was our driver for the return as well, and he stopped at the perfect spot for a photo op of the islands. It is a half hour drive to Puerto Embarcadero where we embarked on the tour.
After using the bathroom facilities and receiving our national marine park bracelets, we walked to the boat and removed our sandals. (These are kept in a tub for retrieval at the end of the tour). Ricardo was our captain and Charlie was the nature guide. The boat was a lovely, freshly painted, spacious, clean catamaran. We were served snacks, sandwiches, beer, and water during the tour. Margaritas are also available if desired. The crew was informative, funny, helpful, and concerned for our safety. We started a bit late, so the crew extended the trip to make up for that missed time. The snorkelers among us saw plenty of fish. Bird life was abundant. January was the wrong time of the year to see whales. Ricardo’s historical information about the islands was charming, funny, and fascinating. Tour is highly recommended by our group. Take sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and a wind jacket. It can get breezy at times and at other times you are fully exposed to the sun.

Our fifth year in a row that we have visited Loreto BCS and fifth excursion to the Loreto Bay National Marine Park in as many years. I have to say this was my absolute favorite, because aside from the aves, the sea lions, jumping manta rays and lots of dolphins, we saw a humpback whale and her calf! A first for our three generation family. They swam together and she then breached. It was spectacular! We took the tour with Jazive Sport Fishing and our captain was proficient and patiently allowed us to linger among the dolphins. We ended the tour at the beautiful, crystalline Los Metates beach at Coronado Island. We opted to add lunch which consisted of burritos and delicious ceviche all at reasonable prices. A wonderful experience, looking forward to our return.

A great place to see blue whales. Pretty close to them. If you are expecting a Bambi experience like the gray whales in Lopez Mateo, you will be disappointed. The blue whale is approached from a distance and then admired for the magnificent and unique creature that he is. There are beaches on Carmen Is. with white sand and blue waters.

We went on a private panga boat tour with Magda Tours (+52 613 104 5200). Husband and Wife, Gabriela & Hector (Boat Captain) started their own business four years ago. They were both Exceptional!!!!!! Gabriela took care of arranging everything as we requested regarding food and drinks which were included. She met us at the marina, and took us to the boat where her husband Hector took over. I didn't have cash to pay for the trip, and Gabriela was kind enough to drive me to an ATM in town to get some cash. Hector took us out on a 5 hour tour around Coronado Island. We left the Marina at about 3:30 pm and were the last boat to leave. Due to the weather, none of the other captains (5 others) reported seeing much sea-life. While we were snorkeling, Hector spotted a group of dolphins and told us to get back in the boat. We caught up to the group of dolphins (approximately 200 - 300) jumping all around us. It was an absolutely unbelievable experience!!! Once in a lifetime!!!! We will definitely be back, and will only use Hector and Gabriela's family business.

Today we took a 4+ hour tour with Reny Renato out of VDP Islands of Loreto. It was a fresh, breezy day with overcast skies, but we made the most of it finding hidden beaches, exploring island shores on Danzante and Carmen. We even got in some snorkeling and hiking at a protected cove out of the waves. Lots of fun, good lunch, really steady ride in an Apex inflatable. Thanks, Reny, and Villa del Palmar. This tour is always fun! Looking forward to finding dolphins next time.

We greatly enjoyed our tour of six people with the most excellent guide, Rammses Talamantes, of Rammses Guided Tours. +1-613-111-9876. He offers kayak, snorkeling, fishing, whale watching, hiking, and more. We have been on a number of trips with him.
Rammses speaks fluent English, has a good sense of humor, is very knowledgeable about culture and history, natural history, and best of all he is proactive, has excellent judgement and is very responsible. His boat, The Fish Whisperer, is clean and comfortable, and has a toilet aboard.
We can’t wait to come back!

It really is a very beautiful experience!
There are many options to take this tour, I can recommend Oswaldo, we contacted him for a recommendation in a craft store. He offered us a package with food (very fresh ceviche and burritos), plus invited us a sashimi prepared at the moment, arriving at the beach of Coronado Island. A very friendly and responsible person. 613 113 9912
The views we witnessed are amazing. It was our turn to see sea lions, fish, manta rays and birds. We weren't lucky to see other species.

Our whale watching boat pulled into one of the playas here, which had lovely white sand and tons of gorgeous shells on the beach. The surrounding 10-12 foot cliffs had many exposed fossils of ancient sea life. We could have spent all day there exploring if we had more time. Watch out for the wasps though. They are attracted to any food you pull out, especially sweets.

I stayed here for five days with my wife and two friends. I read a few reviews and realized I need to write about the amazing food and buffet. The buffet was amazing and included shrimp, steak, Mexican food and excellent desserts. Lupita was the most amazing host and really went out of her way to help us. The best food was at the beach bar where Mickey and Jorge cooked and waited on us. The food was cooked on the beach and so fresh and excellent. I highly recommend eating on the beach but all other restaurants were excellent as well.

If eco-tourism is on your list, this park & setting are beautiful! While we were only on the water for a day we saw numerous bird & marine species including spinner dolphins & blue footed boobies. Whales calve in these waters although we were a few weeks early but saw many migrating on the pacific side. Loreto & its marine Park setting were a highlight of our Baja adventure!

I think $7 is a high estimate. Closer to $2US or less. I’ve been going for here 15 years and don’t recommend “on your own”., but your call. I’m guessing it’s more about getting the right guide, l understand that. Most of the resorts have recommended guides. If you’re interested, I’ve been using same fellow for the whole time I’ve visited here. He is an experienced scuba guide, commercially fished (hand lines out of pangas) for years so he knows where to scuba fish. Most of the Sportsfishing guides don’t. There’s also an American lady “Sue” who is an excellent resource. She used to uRun a guide service called “Baja ...something. Most locals know here. Also, Stephen, another expat who owns “Cocos Cabanas”, is an excellent resource to reliable guides (especially if you’re referred to him ). Tell him Roberto from Oregon sent you to him. LOL. If you want contact info to my guide, txt me 503-349-8557.

Hi, can you pls tell me what hotel and tour company you booked your tour through? I'm stopping there for the day on a cruise in April, and would like to find a good tour company that would take us down to the Nat'l park at Isla Danzante. Also, do you recall the name of the tour, and their cost? Thanks

I think it was Land and Sea Eco Tours? A US couple own it. The office was right on a corner. We also booked a second tour in Nopolo and that was they the hotel there. Both were excellent.

when is the best time to see blue whales in Loreto please?
Written September 24, 2017
Middle of February through the end of March is the usual time period they are in the area.
Humpback whales, fin whales also are in the same areas at the same times. They are all feeding on krill/green stuff in the ocean.
It's not unusual to see adults and "babies".
During the same period you could take a trip to the Pacific side and hang out in a few lagoons with the gray whales both adults and babies. The trip takes about 2 hours driving from Loreto.
All whale watching is closely regulated and tour providers all need a special permit.

We are looking for a place to stay over Christmas. Any recommendations near Loreto Bay National Marine Park?
Written November 17, 2016
We stayed at the Hotel Santa Fe. It was clean, had a small kitchen, a patrolled parking lot, and was about $50 per night. Also the steak and seafood restaurant right next door was great.

Hi everyone... can you tell me your experience with the weather during Xmas season? Is it very windy and rough sea?
Written July 29, 2016
i have not been in the Loreto area in December but just travel thorough in Nov and then this year I hung out in March and April. I have a casa closer to San Jose del Cab. Usually that time of year in Baja is pleasant however and the water warm.

What is the best way to see the wildlife, without a crowd or "tour"
Written February 25, 2016
you can take a tour or you can just walk over to the boat launch on the malecon near the whale shark statue and there are plenty of private pangas 'for hire'
Definitely have someone take you to Coronado Island for swimming and a picnic
