Going to volunteer with the Shipwreck Survey was the best travel decision I have ever made! (Including seeing the great pyramids). It was everything I hoped it would be, extremely informative, structured, adventurous, exciting, fun. I went with no marine archaeology background and left feeling like I found my new passion. Ruud and Alex were just the best. I can't recommend this experience enough. Go! Do it!

Along with my significant other I am the only person that has done the field school twice - the summer FS of 2018 and the winter FS of 2019. Says it all, right !? This 2 week action packed field school is a very exciting, adventurous, multidimensional & educative program. It takes you through the full cycle of marine archeology and you are an active part of it: the surveying, diving, excavating, lab work and presentation of the field school's findings. In parallel you get to know about the theory through interesting presentations and workshops. Ruud also ensures you remain active all the time - in addition to the marine archeological activities he takes you on nature hikes, historical tours, fun dives (including an unforgettable night dive on a more recent wreck) and the local bars and restaurants of St Eustatius. This way you also get to know all the other participants really well. Some of these people will become friends, mark my words. Ruud is a very approachable person and will ensure the field school becomes an unforgettable experience for you, whether you are a student in archeology or just want to do it out of fun and interest.

I joined the Shipwreck Survey's summer field school in 2019, and am so thankful that I did! This field school should be everyone's top choice when interested in underwater archaeology. The Shipwreck survey provides an overall experience rather than just focusing on one specific area. From this, you will learn the skills and tools necessary to work on an underwater dig. The experience and knowledge I gained from this field school undoubtedly is the reason I gained an internship with the archaeological research center in St. Eustatius. I have no doubt that anyone who joins this field school, whether it's for fun or to further their career in archaeology, will gain invaluable experience and have a blast doing so!

This was my first archaeological field school and it's going to be hard to beat. I fully believe this program helped me get into grad school, and makes me feel more confident going into it. Not only did the Shipwreck Survey help me academically but it solidified my love for archaeology. The days were well planned, well rounded, and I was never bored. We got to be a part of the entire process, start to finish. I've made lifelong friends at this feild school and memories I'll cherish forever. I learned so much and I could not be more thankful to the Shipwreck Survey!

The Shipwreck Survey was an amazing archeological field school. As someone with field experience on land, it was amazing to dive into underwater archeology and explore a "whole new world." The archeology was community engaged with public presentations and opportunities to explore the island and history. I participated in the winter session on Statia, and the program was able to help me complete my diving before the program started when I was unable to before the program due to the winter weather. It was a wonderful experience and great learning opportunity. It was a professional and safe field experience even when diving was completely new. We were a part of every step of data collection and felt that the data we were collecting was valuable and artifacts were handled with care and proper procedures. If you are interested in archeology or a student of archeology this was an amazing experience where everyone was engaged with the trip!
