Great beach for the morning where you can get some shade under the beach side trees but this disappears as the sun swings round about lunchtime. Then its full on sunshine!
Beach is noisy from long tail boats leaving Ao Nang ferry point and this is consistant throughout the day. What is handy are the 7-11's across the beach road if you want cheap drinks and ice creams.
There are beach vendors but they are not persistent. Just give a polite 'no thank you' and they tend not to call back.
Beach gets very busy at sunset as the whole town seems to appear with drinks and cameras to catch the wonderful sunsets.

It was a great view, but once you head down to the water, you'll find it murky and a little off putting.
Truth be told, we walked further up towards Railay Bay direction for slightly cleaner and clearer water. Also, it's crazy crowded; if you're looking for quieter spots, you can try Klong Muang Beach which is slightly further, but the beach and waters are cleaner and quieter there.
Great thing about this place is the accessibility of food and shops. And I recommend going online to check for tours prices before purchasing any tours with the local travel agents; always haggle because locals there generally will overcharge you the moment they see that you're a tourist.

The 1 km long Ao Nang Beach is the main beach of the Ao Nang and the most famous beach in Krabi. It's located in the heart of Krabi's tourist town.
The beach is used mainly for sunbathing. It's not suitable for swimming because during the day time there's a huge amount of long-tail boats leaving for other beaches or nearby islands and there's not any shady spot. It is exclusively well visited at sunset.
Ao Nang consists of a main street, which houses restaurants, pubs, shops, massages and other tourist facilities. It's a top tourist center and offers a relaxed atmosphere. Ao Nang has a different atmosphere, comparing with other touristic cities of Thailand because almost 50% of people are Muslim there.
I went to Ao Nang by Ferry from Phuket. We left from Rassada pier in Phuket and it took about 2.5 hours to get to Ao Nang (Nopparat thara beach). The route was really amazing and there were many islands or tall standing cliffs in the sea. The boat itself was convenient and comfortable. You could enjoy just sitting and watching limitless Clear water through the window as you listening to your music, or you could enjoy going out on boat’s deck and breathing and seeing breathtaking natural sceneries, formed by rock and water.
Ao Nang is a prestigious & lovely city, it provides many pleasures and attractions and sometimes unique experiences for you and your family but in night life field it’s poor and it’s not suitable for singles who are looking for an adventurous night life.
But for those who are looking for Sea & Sun, it’s really the best choice with the most beautiful Beaches which are located around it. Some of them are accessible by motorbike and some of them (like Railay Beach, Ton sai Beach, Phra Nang Beach) are accessible only by long tail boats.
And finally for hiking lovers, Ao Nang and Krabi town and outskirts (with many forests, natural parks, natural trails and viewpoints) are the best location for hiking & trekking that I have ever experienced.

The beach is not crowded and there is the possibility of swimming long distances. You can bring your own towels or rent sun lounger for 100 baths per day. It’s possible to rent a kayak or paddleboard for good prices.
All around Ao Nang beach there is seaside walking promenade. Also, you can get directly from Ao Nang Beach to Railay Beach by tail boat.
On the south side of the beach it is possible to go for a short walk through the jungle which is a part of the national park and protected area and you’ll reach the other side of Ao Nang beach, which is also very beautiful and private.
Don’t forget to visit Ao Nang beach in the sunset time and enjoy the beautiful vivid colors of sun going down behind the sea horizon.

...but, because there are very few tourists, it was almost deserted when we were there over Christmas. There were very few long tail boats working when normally, they are many taking tourists to various islands. Probably due to few visitors, there wasn't as much litter as on previous visits so I guess that's a good thing.
It's a great beach for a walk or if you are feeling particularly energetic, a run! Our favourite time is late afternoon/early evening when the light is gradually fading and the colour of the sea changes every few minutes. Sunsets can be amazing.
The road through Ao Nang is immediately by the beach in places and the road is lined with shops and restaurants although a significant number were closed due to Covid.
In normal times, the beach is crowded with foreign tourists with the nearby Nopparathara beach seemingly the favourite for Thais.
Hopefully the good times will eventually return but at the present time take advantage of an almost deserted wonderful stretch of sand.

The beach is very long, and i would suggest to go till the end( turn from main road to left) so there is wont be much boats, place has a nice view and shadow from trees.
Also i would highly recommend the massage on the beach, with coconut milk and facial treatment with cucumber.
There is few stages, so better try stage under number 9, people there was really kind and provided me with fruits, water and carpet for the beach. The masaage itself was really good and cost me around 250THB for 1 hour.

Ao Nang Beach isn't quite up to the same standard as its cousin to the north. There didn't appear to be much depth to it, although perhaps I visited at higher tide.
There is however a very interesting piece of installation art at the northernmost portion of the beach! You need to climb onto an access road to get to it. It isn't visible from the beach itself

Depends what you are coming here for.
There are lots of tourists on this beach and gets pretty full, it reminds you of a beach in Spain.
As through transportation to places, you will hear lots of boats with there loud engines in and out of the area.
Also if you get hungry you have local foods and all the standard western places like McDonald’s which is quite expensive.
If you would like a nice alternative I’d recommend railay beach, which is in another area but is not too be missed !

This beach is very popular and very noisy. Long tail boats come and go from this destination approx. every 5 mins or so and they create quite a noise. There are also four sewer outlets along this beach that run directly into the sea and the smell is atrocious. The sand itself is nice, there are lots of nice restaurants and massage places along the strip to go to but the smell and noise was just too overpowering for me. If you want a quieter experience with lovely sand and nice calm(er) waters, I would recommend you head up to Noppathara Beach just over the bridge.

Just spent a week in Ao Nang, enjoying the 2 beautiful beaches where the views are stunning. Lovely people, very warm and sincere, good selection of bars and restaurants, an all round good experience. I've read that the Ao Nang beach is loud and possibly too busy. All I can say to that is that the noise of the long tail boats plying their trade is no more intrusive than the waves hitting the shore or the sound of a cold Chang being poured into your glass!, And, if it is too busy/noisy, the other beach, Nopparat Thara, is almost empty and equally as nice. Another complaint I had read was that the touts along the pavement are bothersome. All you have to say is "No thanks", smile and walk on. And, I met one named Benod Kuma, at the Moti Mabal restaurant, who could make the most miserable person smile and did so regularly. Worth a visit just to see him in action. Plus the food at the restaurant is very pleasant too. No complaints from me regarding anything at Ao Nang and certainly intend returning next year.

We are due to stay in Ao Nang in November 2020, and I was wondering whether there are any other beaches within walking distance. A few of the reviews about Ao Nang beach being dirty are a bit of a worry. Hope someone can help

Listen sorry for late (very) late reply. In the meantime you probably canceled your trip to Thailand because of Covid19.
Beach in Ao Nang is not special but you can reach so many beautiful islands in a few minutes.
Since perhaps you will eventually come in 2021.... still have time to answer your eventual further questions.
Greetings from the only Covid19 FREE country in the world. Thailand is magic

If you like beachs you can visit Railay beach and phra nang Cave Beach and Hong island very easy by booking longtail. Phra nang you can kayak around some parts of it which is good. There is also a 4 island Speedboat trip for 2800baht each including food and drink... We didn't do this we choose just to do the day at bamboo which cost approx 1400baht per person Including food and drink and its only 40mins away by speedboat. I wouldn't waste any time on Ao Nang beach for swimming not very good. Krabi night market is also not far away.

My plan is to have two tours. 1. Island hopping. 2. Snorkelling at koh rok and koh haa. Does it worth it to do two almost similar activities on different day? Or it just a waste of time and money?

Most guides will take you to both places but if you have to choose between the two, I'd choose Koh Ha. The turquoise water is just amazing. But i noticed your question is either island hopping or koh rok&ha. If you choose snorkeling, the tour will include going to different islands anyway which also includes lunch.

We will be in krabi in the last week of August with our 2year old. We're looking for a beach property for convenient beach bumming primarily and not too much rush. Will railey be too inconvenient? Also, if we go towards ao nang in the evening, will coming back to railey be too inconvenient and/or expensive? If someone on here has been to Calangute in Goa, could you please make a comparison between Calangute and Ao Nang? We want to completely avoid that kind of crazy mad rush, but not at the cost of convenience because of our son.
