About Meli PAP
The honeybee is one of the oldest and most important beings of nature and is an essential component for maintaining balance in the ecosystem. When visiting our beehive garden at Polemarhi village, you will be taking part in a beehive tour. After wearing the beekeeper's hat and veil, we will open the hives and see the honey, brood, worker bees, drones - maybe even the queen bee herself. Later, we will gather pollen from a pollen collector. Then you are welcome as guests to our house, where you can look at photos of our personal collection of worker bee visits to the region's flowers across all four seasons. The delicacies you will be tasting are honey, pollen, pasteli and rakomelo from our own production. In addition nuts, graviera cheese, rusk and Cretan mountain herb tea will all be served with honey. If you wish, honey and pollen are available for sale. Tours are arranged after a set appointment on a daily basis, except Tuesdays and Thursdays and they last 2 hours.

Really lovely, very interesting. We´ve felt us very warmly welcomed and had an amazing time with Antonis and Artemis. I hardly recommend it!

Absolutely wonderful experience!! We were welcomed like friends by Andonis and Artemis and had such a fun, interesting, and really personal morning chatting over delicious honey and food pairings after visiting some hives in person. Andonis is so passionate and knowledgeable about his trade and answered every question we could come up with during our almost 3 hour visit with patience and enthusiasm. He has been in the business 30 years and is yet completely humble, kind, and personable. We got to see the bees, honey, pollen, wax, and little larvae in the hive, and even try some raw honey right out of the hive! Andonis also happily snapped some photos of us in the bee garden. The treats and pairings Artemis prepared were generous and we had more than enough of every combination! Enough to eat almost constantly for 2 hours and walk away not needing any lunch 😅 - our bellies were very happy and full of honey, pollen, tea, amazing raki ‘liquor’ and other delicious snacks! We learned SO much and the time passed like nothing in the beautiful home and garden of this lovely couple. It was a highlight of our 14 day trip. I would absolutely recommend!

If you want to get off touristic paths and experience something special you should visit Antonis. You will learn a lot about bee keeping and honey, but also will have an opportunity to have a grasp of local life.

Amazing time spent with Antonis and Artemis in their beautiful house. Antonis explained us the whole honey process and details about bees with passion and pedagogy, before making us taste the honey through its combination with tea, nuts or cheese. Beautiful moment spent in his company, where we exchanged about more than honey. If you are in Chania make sure to visit him as he and his wife are lovely people (they even offered us figs from their garden for the road), dedicated to a sustainable honey production and of course producing a delicious honey.

We had the most fantastic time our two boys (8 and 6 years old). We spent over 2 hours 30 learning about the bees, handling them first hand, tasting the honey and pollen with some tea and nuts. Visiting the owners garden and seeing the slide show in our hosts wonderful home. We were greeted with freshly squeezed orange juice and were given fruits from their garden on our departure. Such kind and friendly hosts and hugely knowledgable. We all learnt a lot and would most definitely recommend a visit in the morning and with long sleeved top and trousers and shoes. We bought some honey to take home to share with our families. A great alternative to a morning at the beach!
