Visited on 10/08/2024.
We visited this lost sanctuary in the mountains (the road is endless, I even saw a guy who came upstairs with his car that had overheated) coming back from our holiday in the Hautes-Alpes. A beautiful experience, not too many tourists and a magnificent panorama, the church is very beautiful and the view splendid. One feels full of calm and peace even if personally, being an evangelical Protestant, I do not worship the Virgin. But the corner is worth the trip

This is located in a scenic mountain-surrounded height in the French Alps, a reason why, my wife said, she felt being there is like being in heaven. The road going there twists up the the side of a mountain, with sometimes spectacular views.
This shrine-complex was built in the mountains where two French children saw and talked to the Virgin Mary in 1846. She appeared to them in light brighter than the sun, emanating from the crucifix she wore. Three sets of statues, near each other at that site, represent the three stages of this apparition. They first saw Mary sitting, bent over weeping, for the sins of men. (The second set of statues shows her talking to the two children; the third shows her about to ascend to heaven at the end.) The children thought at first that Mary was a mother of the area, since she wore the sort of clothes women wore in that area.
At that time a dried-up spring began flowing on that spot. You can still see it flowing out of the ground (it is covered over there at that spot) and further on, this small stream pools in a place where pilgrims gather to see and gather its water.
Before we arrived, I had thought that my wife and myself might have to climb some distance up a mountain path to get to the apparition site. But the shrine complex there was built right next to the apparition place, and, in fact, a great basilica was built right before it, where, in fact, we went to mass.
Numbers of people come here, including buses of pilgrims. Some people stay in the rooms at the shrine complex--which are simple rooms, with no TVs, showers, or phones, but of course attractive because they are in that very place.
My wife and I spent two days at this shrine. eating at its large cafeteria. The cafeteria has rather average food, but it is handy and convenient (ask for their menu in English) There is also a restaurant at this shrine, though my wife and I didn't take the time to eat there.
There is a welcome desk at the main entrance, as well as a gift store where crowds of people were. There are no charges for going there. The Catholic Church approved of this apparition two years after it occurred and soon work began building its basilica.
To learn more about the actual apparitions of the Virgin Mary to the two children in 1846, you could google to the "theotokos" site and "the apparitions at La Salette."
My wife and I spent more than two weeks going to Catholic shrines in France privately, and we were especially happy we went there, gaining strong love for this place.

This is one of the most beautiful places my eyes laid upon. Going up to the french alps where the sanctuary was located was a thrill. Reaching the place was awesome. Learning about the miracle that happened there was a blessing. The sanctuary where we stayed was just Ok and expected of a retreat house. It was a no frills accommodation . The food served was just fine. I was not expecting much considering the location on the top of the mountain. The beauty and enchantment of the place was more than enough to make me satisfied and nourished both gastronomically and spiritually. The staff were accommodating esp the priest who became our guide. It was indeed a humbling experience to have reached that sanctuary. Truly awesome!

A humble place in the midst of majestic mountains. It appreas that volunteers are a great contribution to the running of this place. The hotel is humble but extremely comfortable. The meals are simple but tasty. They also have a snack bar with very delicious food. It is an oasis away from civilization. Warning: it is very high up in the Alps. An overnight stay is strongly recommended.

We came here for a church pilgrimage and arrived in the evening. As it was dark we had no idea what awaited us in the morning. We were greeted by the volunteers who run the hostel and we had a dinner prepared for us. After a long days journey the meal was one of the simplest and best meals I’ve ever had. When we were given the keys to our room we didn’t know what to expect. We opened the door and saw our humble accommodations- but the water was hot and the bed was soft and cozy. When I woke up in the morning and opened the curtains I literally could not believe my eyes, it was heaven on earth. I felt like a kid and couldn’t wait to get outside and really take it all in. I had planned on asking my fiancé to marry me at another point in our pilgrimage but the views alone overtook me and I had no other choice but to ask her to marry me on the mountain side. Regardless of what your faith is, the place is so tranquil, beautiful and the peace you get by just standing there is enough to make all your worries go away. This sanctuary, this humble hostel, the slice of heaven was the highlight of my pilgrimage. And for reasons I’ve already stated it will forever be one of my best memories. I encourage you to go and see for yourself; somehow, someway try to make it there.

This shrine is so peaceful and beautiful in the French mountains. The mornings are amazing and breathtaking beauty all around. There are walking paths you can walk around the mountain that are great for contemplation or just alone time. They have beautiful candlelit vigils which you should not miss. They have 24 Hour Eucharistic adoration and if you stay in the pilgrim house it’s connected to the church and you can visit the chapel at any time of day or night. There is also a miraculous spring that you can bottle up and take home with you.The gift shop is also really good!

The Sanctuary of the Salette is one of the most beautiful sanctuaries I have ever visited. Located at 1700m above sea level and just over the city of Corps, the view is just magnificent. There is a way to go by car but I decided to hike up the mountains with 2 of my friends. 9km and 3 hours later, we arrived. Really worth it. For those thinking of hiking up to the Sanctuary, be sure to eat well and take a lot of water. One can stay in the sanctuary if they wish as for they have a lot of hike programs.

The location is absolutely spectacular with views over the surrounding mountains, particularly those over the Dévoluy range, topped out by the Mont Obiou at 2780m. It is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics, and the complex comprises a basilica, hotel, conference centre, large capacity restaurant aimed at the conference groups, cafeteria for the public and souvenir shop. On 14th August each year, the place is crammed full of pilgrims. At other times, aside from organised groups, most of the cars parked up there are those of walkers, as the area is a perfect start point for some serious walking on adjacent mountains and the connecting crests.
It is a 15km winding and rather steep road up from Corps, and in the winter can be quite scary, though scenically magical because of the icicles hanging from rocks by the side of the road and the purity of the snow all around. At any time, you will take a lot of great photos.

Sitting in the basilica under the beautiful statue of Our Lady, one is overcome by an enormous sense of peace. One can imagine that not praying enough, not setting aside time for church, not repenting were the points of her message. But she was not remonstrating, she delivered her message out of love.

Arriving here is harrowing. It took more than two hours to drive the 50 miles from Grenoble with switchbacks and dropoffs that remind me of driving in the Andes. We even had to negotiate a large herd of sheep.

It was foggy and damp when we arrived; the basilica loomed out of the mist. Located at almost 6,000 feet in an alpine meadow, the site has none of the distractions of Lourdes. This is a place of worship and contemplation.

We were her for a brief visit, but want to return for a longer retreat.
